Mint Installer Drive Selection Dropdown Not Working

While attempting to install LM20 alongside another linux distro I selected the "install alongside" option. I have two drives, a 240gb ssd for my linux os's of choice and a 500gb hdd ntfs data drive half full of various media. Despite the ssd having loads of room on it the LM installer deci...

Re: Adding An Additonal HDD For Data Without Complications

Its okay. I've got it working. The culprit was that windows line in fstab, my confusion caused by the tutorial telling me to use that line for an ntfs partition. Solved by substituting this line (as per pbears update) LABEL=Data /media/data ext4 defaults, nofail 0 2 but changing "ext4" for ...

Re: Adding An Additonal HDD For Data Without Complications

Well the manual tutorial seemed to have worked. Symlinks were working and I transfered a lot of files from an external drive onto the new data drive. That is until i re-booted and now my os cant see the data drive. I cant even manually mount it, if i click on it in Computer it says it doesnt exist. ...

Re: Adding An Additonal HDD For Data Without Complications

Formatting the partition will be enough to make it usable, but you'll have to mount it manually, e.g., by clicking in the left pane of File Manager. If you want an internal drive to mount automatically, you have to deal with fstab. Once I've put the drive inside my pc I will search for threads abou...

Re: Adding An Additonal HDD For Data Without Complications

Brilliant thanks. And that way I'm guessing it will be accessible from Windows as well as from Linux? that may be an added bonus.

Adding An Additonal HDD For Data Without Complications

I've been running Mint for a few years now in various dual boot scenarios so not a total newbie at the installation and partitioning side of things on single hdd/ssd machines. I've got a spare 500GB HDD which I want to put in my spare drive bay and use it as a media/data drive i.e to store video, mu...

Re: Dual Boot Installation

Ended up being unable to boot either OS and was stuck with a black DOS screen and prompt. So windows booted and provided the DOS screen...? b) Try using the "something else" option to install Mint 20 over the old Mint partition and just hope it doesnt mess up my bootloader. I can't recall...

Dual Boot Installation

I've got a pc with Mint and Windows 7 on the same hdd. I would like to install Mint 20 over the top of the old Mint and leave W7 untouched. the last time i did this I selected the "do something else" option on the installation media and somehow ended up deleting grub and losing my bootload...

Re: Major Difference between Cinnamon and Mate versions

I've used both Cinnamon and Mate. Originally I chose Mate as i had read that it was lighter and faster on older hardware. However I am finding Cinnamon just as fast and this is on a 13 year old core duo pc with onboard intel graphics. Cinnamon runs really quick on it. Possibly even quicker than Mate...

Re: Newbie Fix: Firefox Screen Tearing, Intel

The tearing I mentioned during scrolling only happens in firefox. I remember once using a tweak in FF config settings relating to compositing and tearing. I will have to look it up as I've forgotten it. But I'm pretty happy to discover Cinnamon is usable now on my old hardware. Previously I could on...

Re: Newbie Fix: Firefox Screen Tearing, Intel

My video tearing has gone now in Cinnamon apart from diagonal tearing when scrolling. The youtube screen tearing test vids are not perfect but a lot better. I often use Lady Gagas "Applause" video as a test as it was where I first noticed terrible tearing a few years ago so its a good yard...

5.0.0-32-generic Kernel

I hope this section is appropriate for a question relating to kernels. Its the closest I could find. I've just done a fresh install of Cinnamon 19.3 and the default kernel is 5.0.0-32-generic. This series are all marked "end of life" in the update manager. Should I switch to the latest 4.1...

Re: Newbie Fix: Firefox Screen Tearing, Intel

I've found marco + compton the best combination for my particular machine. Intel core duo with onboard graphics. I'd really like to try the cinnamon desktop but as that DE does not support compton I'm only left with Mate or XFCE as my options. I do check forums every now and then to see if anyone ha...

Re: [Solved]4.5ubuntu1.1 Kernel Update

Thanks for the replies. I've taken it and I'm also still on my original kernel. It was confusingly described as a kernel version update by my update manager.

[Solved] 4.5ubuntu1.1 Kernel Update

I'm running 19.1 on the 4.15 kernel which I always update when an update appears in the mint update tool. However this 4.5ubuntu1.1 appears to be from a different series? Or is labelled differently to all previous updates I have seen offered? I have used the search facility, no joy, hence this post....

Re: Video editor recommendations

Any ideas whats going wrong? Missing dependency maybes? Please familiarise yourself with the forum rules and start a new thread. Don't hijack this one. Its the exact same question not a hijack. I was asking for recomendations like the OP was. Forget my remark about dependencies. Just tell me if the...

Re: Video editor recommendations

I'm looking for the same solution as the OP. Being able to also join clips would be a bonus but not a deal breaker. I'm having problems with Vidcutter on Mint 19.1. It crashes as soon as I try to open a video clip. I had an older version of Vidcutter installed on MX LInux which worked for cutting bu...
