Re: NAS software.

Further to the subject of openmediavault, there is a version for raspberry pi.
If you don't need masses of storage that could be a cheap, small, low power draw solution.

Re: Update manager config. (chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra update)

Precisely.
There are several phrases that get accepted immediately, one of those is codec.
Presumably the chrome/chromium part is just where it's sourced from.

Update manager config. (chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra update)

Hi all,
LM 18.3

Is there a way to tell update manager not to offer updates for software I don't have installed?
I keep getting updates listed for chrome.

Re: NAS software.

I'm at the other end of the scale. Its main purpose is to share media and software among devices on the local network, no web functionality required. Everything will be available to everyone, so anonymous login and no user shares required. I would prefer to avoid processor intensive stuff so ZFS, ne...

Cheers,
Found and downloaded that for a test run.
I've previously tried freenas a couple of years ago, but found it to be too unstable and complex for my needs.

Re: [SOLVED] LM as NAS and Media Server?

I'm looking into the diy route as well now. The current box is getting full and at its limit for expandability. My immediate needs are about 8TB, but I would like to be able to expand to 20TB+ without major issues. Don't need a media server, users can just play stuff direct from the nas. All users h...

NAS software.

Hi all,
The NAS box is getting a bit full and won't take further expansion.

So what's available for a home built software solution?

I've got a couple of machines available, and a stack of HDDs.

Cheers.

Re: With the advent of Fuchsia the Linux devices share will decrease

So I'm one of a severe minority that doesn't have a google device. Ok, I have a 'phone' running andriod, but it doesn't contain a sim and is only used as a satnav. All comms are done via wifi, and that only gets turned on when I want something, namely a map update. Also, I have never seem an operati...

SD card partition copy & resize.

Hi all,
I have a 16gb card with the following partitions on:
1: 134mb FAT bootable
2: 15.8gb EXT4

Are there any tools available that will copy both partitions to a 128gb card and then resize the EXT4 partition to fill the card?

Tried the disc manager in LM 18.3 XFCE & gparted without success.

Re: Who did come up with this anti-human anti-linux "security measure" for password requirement in this board?

The car example show pretty well the issues caused security systems that have not been thought out. The most popular method of cracking a password is still 'brute force'. Any password requirements that are known serve to reduce the possibilities and therefore make brute force attempts more likely. T...

Re: File manager issues (Thunar) [Solved - sort of]

Ok, I'll be more explicit.

Re-formatted thumb drive as EXT4.
Thunar once more refuses to copy.
Nero copies without complaint.

What can't I know?

Re: File manager issues (Thunar)

Update:
Installed Nemo.

No title corruption.

Copies FAT32 --> EXT4.

Block read/write delays are shorter & info during transfer is updated.

So it looks like all the issues are with Thunar.

Re: File manager issues (Thunar)

Ok cheers. Thought possible first was maybe a known thunar problem. The title corruption only happens in thunar. The copying issue isn't as noticeable in windows, delays are much shorter (2-5 sec) on the ssd. Thought maybe a cache or access speed issue with thumb drives. Delays with usb hdd are abou...

File manager issues (Thunar) [Solved - sort of]

Using mint 18.3 XFCE. 1) Refuses to move files from a 64GB FAT32 thumb drive to a 32GB EXT4 thumb drive. On right click destination paste is greyed out. Went back and formatted the EXT4 drive to FAT32 and all is good. 2) Column titles displaying as corrupted. At first it looked like muck on the scre...

Personally I think that blog would be vastly improved by having links to previous distros on page, we can't all run 19. As far as swappiness goes, he does delve into the memory and drive criteria in some depth. On this machine I've got swappiness=1, I may be better with it set to 0 & claw back the u...

Hibernate option removal

Hi all,
Hopefully a simple question.
LM18.3 xfce
How do I remove hibernate from the shutdown menu?

Reason for doing so, never used it and I never will, so just tidying up.
