Sophos - For Beginners
Hi Folks, Thought I would post this excellent YouTube tutorial link for any beginner/newbie who is thinking of installing Sophos for Linux. It is very simple - must be if I can understand it! :) Yes, yes, I know, Linux never gets any viruses including Corona Virus! But some like to stay on the safe ...

Re: Mint P.C. For Mint - Recommendations Please
Sincere thanks for all the replies. Such a terrific community. Xenopeek: Lots of ideas. Thank You. I’m very much interested in the Linux Mini Compact Form - MintBox 3. I’ll wait for Clem’s review. I like the idea it is probably not an energy guzzler. I12K4: Thanks for your links. For a moment I forg...

Re: Mint P.C. For Mint - Recommendations Please
Hello! Thanks for the prompt reply. Boring stuff mainly - never any gaming. Desktop Publishing, viewing films and YouTube, Internet, email and database management. Ability to run Virtual Box. I'm still using old programmes on Windows 8.1 lol. Budget: £1500.00 - $ 1,920.15 approximately. Current Leno...

Re: [solved] Initctl: unable to connect to upstart
As good as three years late to the party but never mind. I came on to offer my sincere thanks to xenopeek for his advice. I had the exact problem as the original poster. I used xenopeek's tip and was up and running in no time. It's thanks to people like him and the many others on here with years of ...

Mint P.C. For Mint - Recommendations Please
Hi, I am thinking of buying a new p.c.as my Lenovo Ideapad is getting a bit old - like me! I had thought of buying an iMac and using Virtual Box but would prefer to stay with a dedicated Linux Mint p.c. - especially after learning about Apple strangling their iphones including mine! It will not be u...

Re: Printer Problems - HP LaserJet 6L
For anybody else using this printer. As good as sorted. It wasn't working with the Foomatic Cups system. I therefore changed it to HP LaserJet 6L - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.11 which is working fine.
Cheers

Printer Problems - HP LaserJet 6L
Hi, I've managed to get my ancient Laser Jet 6L working but I am getting a problem. I used the software from the repository. It is using "HP LaserJet 6L Foomatic/ljet4 (recommended)" via a USB cable. The problem is this: Each page I print shows the print preferences in the margin. At the s...

Re: Am I too unforgiving?
When I drag a file or folder from another window to the desktop, instead of being placed where I put it the desktop places it somewhere else and later I have to move it again to where I want it. The grid positioning does not work as it should. And sometimes icons will be positioned on top of each o...

Re: Update Manager misbehaving
Have you tried this? When it is showing the green tick, click 'Refresh' and see what happens? Mine changes to the red cross saying can't refresh. The only way I can get it to go back to green is to do as above post i.e. Update Policy. Weird?

Re: Update Manager misbehaving
GS3. Glad you posted this. I have the same identical problem as yourself. Stays on the green tick for a while then goes to the red cross. I discovered that going to the update manager menu -> Edit -> Update Policy and clicking on the OK Policy box made it go back to green tick but only for a short w...

Re: Am I the only one who still plays CDs?
Yes, have hundreds of CD’s. Last one I bought was last week:soundtrack to Paper Moon. Before that some Leonard Cohen. I’ve got too much junk. 78’s, cassette tapes, rare vinyls, mini discs, 160gb iPod, Zen player as well as a ton of sheet music. I often feel as if I am a volunteer victim of consumeri...

Re: Who no longer trusts or uses Facebook?
I can’t think of one single misanthrope who would approve of Faceache, not a one and that includes myself. As for Google Tube. Pft! Sat watching Zimermann playing Beethoven’s 5th piano concerto and then half way through some advert for a nasal spray! Yes, as a species, we or rather they, have lost i...

As noted in a different post, I’ve just installed VB in my Mint 18.1 along with an old original Windoze 8.1 Thanks to this forum and after watching countless videos, all is working fine. You really can teach an old dog new tricks with patience and good searching abilities. And then today...! Got an ...

Re: Libre Office Base Full Screen
G’Day, as they say in your part of the world. Thanks for your ongoing interest. I trust you are well. Believe me, I have spent ages searching various database solutions suitable for use across platforms but to no avail. GCStar never came up in any of the searches I wish it had. I’ve now given up on ...

Re: Libre Office Base Full Screen
No, there is nothing. Since my last post I have done some searches and it appears others have had the same problem. What I find strange is that every other Libre Office programme is both re-sizeable and can be scrolled - e.g. calc, writer and draw. Likewise all my programmes on Linux Mint can be res...

Just wanted to say a sincere thanks to you all for the help and tips. I now have a Kobo and I can even use my Playbook with network Wi-Fi.
I would have replied sooner but I've been unwell.
Thank You.

Libre Office Base Full Screen
Hello! Am having problems with Libre Office Base using a Form. It fills up the entire screen! No matter wherever I move the mouse cursor there are no drag handles or anything to change the size of the form. I can't even see the Mint taskbar! I have checked all the menus and there is nothing to resiz...

EBook Reader For Linux Mint 18.1
Hello All! Hope you can help. When I ditched Windows (Hallelujah!) I saved all my Epub books on a hard drive. I now have them on my Linux Mint 18.1 Serena using Calibre. I now want to buy a reader which I can use in bed or when out and about. I don't want an app - I actually want a reader but what I...
