Re: Can't install or uninstall Kernels <SOLVED>

Thanks sleeper12! You little beauty! I had been Googling all sorts of stuff and none of it worked. I changed the code on the second page to suit what I had in my /boot/ folder and the kernel I was trying to update to. I'll put what I used below. Each block of code is one line. I confirmed it worked ...

Re: Black screen after opening laptop lid (not waking up from being suspended)

This used to happen intermittently on my Acer laptop as well, about a year ago. In frustration one day, instead of holding the power button down to switch off, I just typed my password into the blank screen and it worked. The problem fixed itself up soon after, maybe due to a kernel update. I really...

Re: Sound input isn't detected

I couldn't use my microphone on LM 18.3 until I installed Gnome-alsamixer from the Software Manager. You could give that a try.

Re: Running an OS from a flash drive?

Tails is set up to run from a USB as well. You can run it at start-up or use it in a virtual machine (not recomended for security, though). You'll get away with using a 16 gig USB and have room for permanent storage.

Can't install or uninstall Kernels [SOLVED]

G'day all. I'm using Linux Mint 18.3 XFCE 64 bit version on an Acer laptop. I just tried installing updates from Update Manager. They all installed except the latest Kernel. I got the following error message - E: /var/cache/apt/archives/linux-image-4.15.0-91-generic_4.15.0-91.92~16.04.1_amd64.deb: c...

Re: <SOLVED> VLC not playing video files

Still on Mint XFCE 18.3. I tried urgrading a few months ago to 19.1 and 19.2 but I couldn't get any thumbnailers to work with it on this laptop. Interestingly, when I tried using Software Manager for one more attempt at installing VLC last night, it said it wasn't available, so I tried the Flathub v...

Re: VLC not playing video files

OK, it's all fixed. I just installed it from the Software Manager, from Flathub. I now have version 3.0.8 and it plays video files just fine.

Thanks again for your assistance.

Re: VLC not playing video files

Thanks for your replies, everyone. I tried all your suggestions but I always end up with the following in the Terminal - E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. I then tried using the Synaptic Package Manager to install it and got the following message - Could not apply changes...

Re: VLC not playing video files

I'm currently using Movie Player (shows as Media Player in the Menu) to play videos. It works fine. I don't have a Timeshift snapshot, unfortunately. VLC was working fine up until I uninstalled Openshot Video Editor. I was using VLC to watch the videos I created with Openshot while I had it installed.

<SOLVED> VLC not playing video files

Hi everyone. I'm using Mint XFCE 18.3, 64 bit version on an Acer laptop. I recently installed Openshot Video Editor from the Software Manager and then uninstalled it as it didn't suit my purpose. After doing that, VLC Media Player won't play video files anymore. All it does is flash on the screen an...

Re: Stuffed up my Secure Boot

Thanks fabien85. The original error hasn't popped up since the last three sets of updates, so something worked to fix that. I tried some different things to try to fix the shim error from within the terminal and the Synaptic Package Manager but nothing worked. I reset the BIOS as you suggested and t...

Re: Stuffed up my Secure Boot

OK, I found the command list for Grub Rescue. If I do what is shown on this page, will the computer boot as normal in Secure Boot mode again, or will I just continue breaking my computer? https://askubuntu.com/questions/232215/stuck-in-grub-rescue-mode It says to look for the partition with "bo...

[SOLVED] Software Manager not working

G'day everyone. I'm using XFCE 19. I put it on this Acer laptop a couple of weeks ago and it worked great, the easiest install you could imagine. I have re-installed it again today and everything appeared to be working fine. I downloaded System Monitor with Software Manager and then did a few other ...
