I worked a similar issue off and on for about 6 hours when time to install MInt18.1 to an M.2 nvme drive; the GRUB simply refused to install unless I created a small FAT32 partition at beginning of drive beforehand (I gave it 1 GB, likely much more than necessary), with "0" space available...

Same problem here, using TV (HDMI) in living room with 7700K/Asus Z270A Prime...
Until this bug is fixed, I have disabled sleep mode on monitor, but, left screen saver enabled....l we will see if that suffices as a temp fix/workaround for an otherwise nice Mint18.1 experience...
