Re: Mint 17.3 security

I understand that it feels awkward to work on a system without an antivirus. I used to be nervous about that, too. I've been using Mint for internet banking for almost 4 years now and never had any problem. I don't use firejail nor any special kind of security settings, only firewall. It's always a ...

Re: A lot of Add's?

Gosh, thank you all. For me, this was an astonishing response, I might even say Political. The first thing is that we all live in wildly different parts of the world, so I am guessing that a common response is not possible, so thank you, for all giving what you see as important. Secondly, I had no ...

Re: Problem installing mint nothing helps :(

@ Mysichvost Since you now have more experience with Linux Mint and more info, you can always reinstall Win 10 on your computer and it will be auto-activated online by M$. Then reinstall Linux Mint 18.1 as a dual-boot. To reinstall Win 10, users need a Windows computer to create a Win 10 Install me...

Re: Problem installing mint nothing helps :(

Hello, I had a very similar problem recently. Please look at my thread https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=241435 Unfortunately, I've lost my windows in the process, but maybe you will be able to keep it. It took me a whole week to get Mint installed and working properly on this machin...

Re: What are your top tips for a Newbie?

Newbies, don't be discouraged when things are difficult and you have no idea how to configure basic settings. There is a solution for you somewhere. It just needs to be found and that requires patience and google, google, google and help from other Mint forum members. Once you find the solution, you...

Re: Headphones not working

I was hesitant about posting again since I was almost certain there would be a new problem again. However, now that I booted a few times and it keeps working, I may say that I have a solution. I'll post it for people with the same problem. In alsamixer, auto-mute has to be ENABLED. I disabled it bec...

Re: Headphones not working

Ok, after restart the machine recognized headphones. I tried pavucontrol. At first, it played through both headphones and speakers, it was impossible to mute speakers and have sound through headphones only. Then I opened alsamixer in terminal and I manually muted speakers and it only plays through h...

Re: Headphones not working

Hello kc1di, just installed new kernel with no change. Do you think it can be solved in KDE or should I try Cinnamon? Or would there be the same problem? I had problems with install, having to try different options in BIOS, trying UEFI, disabling/enabling safe boot, CSM, install with and without 3rd...

Re: Headphones not working

Hi, A lot of newer laptops come with only one jack. on mine the headphone will work if I plug it in and then just pull it out very slightly. It machine then recognizes them as plugged in. Not very good jack in this machine I Think. Never could get an external mike to work though. Good luck in findi...

Headphones not working (solved)

OK, hopefully my previous problem with sound is fixed now because I've restarted the computer a few times and it still works. However, headphones still don't work. Alsamixer seems to recognize them- I can see volume set for them and they are not muted. However, in pavucontrol it says they are unplug...

Re: Fresh install- sound lost after restart (solved)

That sounds like it might be a good approach. That removes all the pulse config stuff. If there's a problem in your config files, that can indeed cause problems. With many applications, removing the config file causes the default config to be recreated the next time the application is started. Let ...

Re: Fresh install- sound lost after restart (NOT solved-problem is back)

If anyone finds this on google, here's what helped me today (altgough I am scared to restart the computer because it is possible it won't work next time). This is a post from someone on Ubuntu forum http://askubuntu.com/questions/426648/how-to-reinstall-pulseaudio-ubuntu-12-04 sudo apt-get purge pul...

Re: Fresh install- sound lost after restart

Thank you. I solved the issue by typing sudo firefox into terminal and it worked. That is not recommended at all. Programs run with sudo have access to everything on your computer. Suppose there were a flaw in Firefox that allowed an attacker to get into Firefox. If it were run as a normal user, th...

Fresh install- sound lost after restart (solved)

Hi, so after some problems I managed to install LM in UEFI mode on a new computer. I installed without 3rd party codecs due to problems with install. After I booted I installed codecs and audio worked just fine. I updated the system and it asked me to disable secure boot in order for codecs to work....

Re: Can't boot neither Windows nor LM (SOLVED)

Dear Michael, thank you for your support. I'm glad to say that LM 18.1 cinnamon is working out of the box! What I did was install Linux without internet, without 3rd party drivers and I clicked Install in UEFI mode. Install was done automatically. I just had to agree with warning about dangers of UE...

Re: Can't boot neither Windows nor LM

So, somehow I managed to delete windows, too. It was erased from the disk and disapeared in BIOS, too. I can't see it in gparted either. When I try to turn on the computer I get blue win screen saying that the PC is broken and can't be repaired. I don't know how it happened! I tried installing Linux...
