name needed twice to boot

Recently I installed an SSD. I like to install on three partitions: home;program and swap. I moved the home from my old hard drive to the new Mint install on the SSD. Everything works fine except for one odd little bit. When I boot, the login requires me to enter the user twice but password is only ...

Re: Screen saver and display to sleep problem Mate Rosa - Solved

This problem has been solved. I removed Mate screen saver program and installed xscreensaver sudo apt purge mate-screensaver mate-screensaver-common && sudo apt install xscreensaver xscreensaver-data-extras But in the end I had to sudo apt-get install xscreensaver Xscreensaver has a lot more options...

Screen saver and display to sleep problem Mate Rosa - Solved

I have Mate Rosa installed on an older 64 bit computer and except for a screen saver and display to sleep problem, it runs fine. Sometimes the screensaver will not come on at all; sometimes the display will go to sleep. Because of screen tearing in Nouveau, it is running the Nvidia driver. Not sure ...

Re: Cinnamon weather desklet is there one for Mate

GIS weather application has stopped being friendly with Gismeteo. Even thought I have an API, I can't get it to work with Openweather, I can get it to work with Yr but the darn thing will only update every 60 minutes. That 60 minutes is a big difference when the summer months are hitting and the tem...

It would be not the only package, which should be better not in official repositories.

Re: Rosa - tried Sarah - back to Rosa

Support was not in the positive mode of questioning but in the mode of supporting anyone else that might decide to waste time doing the same. Maybe my statement was necessary to develop the my testimony about Mint 18 ? :) And now I know. In principle I follow, but I cannot find any support question....

Re: sudo upgrade-system

Yep and I think it may be wise for those in the know to remove it from the repository. Maybe?

Many people tell much nonsense. A pity and even more a pity, that other people fell into their trap.

Re: sudo upgrade-system

Yep. I was researching an issue, came across a Linux site and some people were saying about the great benefits of the program. I disagree with those people.

Obviously, as the description says. Not needed and not present in Mint by default.

Rosa - tried Sarah - back to Rosa

My play-toy computer, not my main computer is an old 32 bit Aspire. It has been running Cinnamon 17.3 Rosa and then I gave Mate a try on it. Just added the DE so I knew there was a bit of bloat added to my computer. Mate ran well. So I decided to do a fresh install of Mate, using the Mate CD. But th...

Re: sudo upgrade-system

It is a program in the package manager. "Upgrade-system offers a convenient way to keep a Debian system up-to-date, yet free from accumulated cruft such as obsolete libraries. It is particularly useful on systems that mix packages from different releases (stable/testing/unstable) and on desktop syst...

sudo upgrade-system - solved

Has anyone had any problems using sudo upgrade-system?

I think it was the basis for me needing to re-install Mint on two different computers.

Re: Mate is missing in software manager

I think it is easier, cleaner, and more reliable to make a fresh install with the desktop you prefer. Seconded. I agree but sometimes we just get lazy. I'd like her to try out Mate for a while before I install a new Mate install. Playing from the disk is not quite the same. I noticed that the Rosa ...

Re: kde along side cinnamon

I've used KDE on several computers and my take on KDE is that it wants to take over everything. Therefore a dual install with KDE and Cinnamon will IMHO clog up your system. To me KDE is the best looking DE but with that comes a price. I agree with the quote in the link. https://forums.linuxmint.com...

Re: Mate is missing in software manager

Oh yes that is it. I was just using mate as a search. I know having 2 DE's isn't protocol and I've been thinking of removing cinnamon on this one. I like Mate but I've been worried about removing Cinnamon because Cinnamon was the first install from a Cinnamon disk. "mint-meta-mate" is probably what ...

Mate is missing in software manager

I had to re-install Mint Rosa 64 cinnamon on one of our computers. Thought I'd also install Mate but it is missing from the software manager. Where is Mate hiding? I know for sure it was on the 32 bit cinnamon disk installed on the computer I am now typing because I installed Mate DE and I am using ...

Re: Cinnamon is crashing

Sadly that did not fix the problem with the kitchen computer. I guess I need to re-install the OS. A bit o a hassle because it is a slim desktop, no Ethernet connection, runs on WiFi and I must bring it into this room to modprobe the B43 driver.

Re: Cinnamon is crashing

Must have been an update that did something because now the old house - everyone can use -- computer that sits on the kitchen counter crashed. Cinnamon had to start in fall back mode. I'll give the re-install a try on that one. I've copied home to a safe place. [solved] Not sure what went wrong. I w...

Re: Cinnamon weather desklet is there one for Mate

I saw that and got it. I am running 17.3 Rosa. When I went to install it I received a message that I have unmet dependencies. I'm thinking the PPA may be for a newer version than Rosa. Weird that it would work in Cinnamon?? "The following packages have unmet dependencies: my-weather-indicator : Depe...

Thank you, I found it.

Now I have to remember how to compile a tar file. I've become so accustomed to DEB files and my memory isn't what it was at one time.
