Re: Mint 19 and haven't installed Nvidia drivers

It was running 17 and didn't know that 18.04 dropped support. I'm glad that Nouveau is running so well on it because in the past Nouveau was not a friend on some of the older computers I have lying around. Think I'll just let it be and not mess with something that is working. The old 304 driver supp...

Mint 19 and haven't installed Nvidia drivers

On a box that sits in the kitchen, I decided to install Mint 19.1 and it runs great. Normally on that older computer, to stop freezing and r screen tear I need to install the Nvidia driver (304?) I think. So far without the driver installed nobody has seen any screen tear or freezing. Be it new or o...

Thanks. Seems like a few more keystrokes are needed these days.

Re: I've used Ifran on Win forever any linux alternatives

Just installed XnView and it looks very impressive. In a few days, I'll give it a workout. Thanks Hi urdrwho, I would recommend "XnViewMP" for an alternative irfanview image browser. What do you think that irfanview can do that Gimp cannot. Are you using the newer excellent Gimp v2.10.xx? XnViewMP ·...

Sudo, gksudo for opening text from terminal

Apparently, some things have changed on this computer that was at 17 and last night I upgraded to 19.1. Are we not supposed to used sudo gedit or gksudo anymore? Yep --- I think about the risk of sudo gedit but what about gksudo? Have I read that we are supposed to use some admin command now? Inquis...

Re: Update not accepting password

Thanks. I tried it and it didn't work for me. So instead of using the update method of terminal commands, which appeared to work, I inserted a disk. I keep home on a different partition so it wasn't that big of a deal to go the fresh install using disk. Never did this, but maybe reset the password: ...

Update not accepting password

I just updated from 18.3 to 19. Everything seemed to go well and then I rebooted. The sign on screen appeared with my user name and the place for my password. I put my password in and it won't accept it. In the grub menu under advanced I do have the upstart choice. I tried it one time and it doesn't...

name needed twice to boot

Recently I installed an SSD. I like to install on three partitions: home;program and swap. I moved the home from my old hard drive to the new Mint install on the SSD. Everything works fine except for one odd little bit. When I boot, the login requires me to enter the user twice but password is only ...

Re: Screen saver and display to sleep problem Mate Rosa - Solved

This problem has been solved. I removed Mate screen saver program and installed xscreensaver sudo apt purge mate-screensaver mate-screensaver-common && sudo apt install xscreensaver xscreensaver-data-extras But in the end I had to sudo apt-get install xscreensaver Xscreensaver has a lot more options...

Screen saver and display to sleep problem Mate Rosa - Solved

I have Mate Rosa installed on an older 64 bit computer and except for a screen saver and display to sleep problem, it runs fine. Sometimes the screensaver will not come on at all; sometimes the display will go to sleep. Because of screen tearing in Nouveau, it is running the Nvidia driver. Not sure ...

Re: Cinnamon weather desklet is there one for Mate

GIS weather application has stopped being friendly with Gismeteo. Even thought I have an API, I can't get it to work with Openweather, I can get it to work with Yr but the darn thing will only update every 60 minutes. That 60 minutes is a big difference when the summer months are hitting and the tem...

Re: Rosa - tried Sarah - back to Rosa

Support was not in the positive mode of questioning but in the mode of supporting anyone else that might decide to waste time doing the same. Maybe my statement was necessary to develop the my testimony about Mint 18 ? :) And now I know. In principle I follow, but I cannot find any support question....

Yep. I was researching an issue, came across a Linux site and some people were saying about the great benefits of the program. I disagree with those people.

Rosa - tried Sarah - back to Rosa

My play-toy computer, not my main computer is an old 32 bit Aspire. It has been running Cinnamon 17.3 Rosa and then I gave Mate a try on it. Just added the DE so I knew there was a bit of bloat added to my computer. Mate ran well. So I decided to do a fresh install of Mate, using the Mate CD. But th...

Re: sudo upgrade-system

It is a program in the package manager. "Upgrade-system offers a convenient way to keep a Debian system up-to-date, yet free from accumulated cruft such as obsolete libraries. It is particularly useful on systems that mix packages from different releases (stable/testing/unstable) and on desktop syst...
