Grub2 rEFInd compatibility

Loaded Sylvia on my Win 10 Toshiba Laptop last year and needed rEFInd to be able to boot Mint. Since then, I've had both grub2 and rEFInd loaded and interestingly, when I shutdown from a windows session on next boot I get the grub2 text menu. When I shut down from Mint (or re-start windows), I get t...

Now Grub on cold boot and rEFInd on restart?

This just started about a week ago (but hadn't used the laptop for about two weeks). If I cold boot, I get the grub menu. If I restart, I get rEFInd menu. They both work fine, just curious why I'm seeing grub since I had never been able to get the grub menu on this Satellite before. Strange.

Re: How do I control case fan speeds?

Thank you ClixTrix - I do let bios control the fans. Presumably that's an ASUS utility. That said, every time I lose power, the bios resets to alarm if the fans are lower than 600 rpm which appears to be the default but the fans are always turning much slower on a cold boot. I have to lower the thre...

[SOLVED] How do I control case fan speeds?

Serena dual booted with an ASUS Z77 Sabertooth. In Windows 7, the case fan speeds are very low. I've had to lower the bios fan speed alarm thresholds to 400rpm just to boot the system. In Mint, the fans are always operating at high speed on boot. I believe it is the case fans that are spinning fast ...

Re: ATTN!...Intel CPU owners

Current reports are that Meltdown and clearly Spectre are not unique to Intel chipsets. AMD and ARM, IBM System Z, Power8, Power9 possibly affected to some extent. https://access.redhat.com/security/vulnerabilities/speculativeexecution https://lwn.net/Articles/742745/ https://newsroom.intel.com/news...

Re: Time to clone and upgrade laptop HDD to SSD

Probably. I repeated the process you told me to go through late last night and am back up and running. Somehow Microsoft bootmgr.efi went missing and I wound up not being able to boot into Windows and the keyboard froze in bios. Ran through the procedure you gave me yesterday and it's back up and ru...

Re: Time to clone and upgrade laptop HDD to SSD

Well, now this is getting very strange. Never get the rEFInd boot manager but after a complete shutdown it booted up in Mint. Wasn't looking at the screen at the time so I missed GRUB pop up. I had been restarting it and it always went to Win10. So now, on a cold boot, I no longer get the rEFInd boo...

Re: Time to clone and upgrade laptop HDD to SSD

Well Happy New Year Laurent85! Odd thing. After successfully (I hope) using ddrescue I re-booted, removed the Live USB and SSD (which was in a USB container) and I no longer am able to get the rEFInd boot screen or boot into Mint on the original HDD which is still installed. I ran through the steps ...

Re: Time to clone and upgrade laptop HDD to SSD

Thank you. Looks like this will take a while. I'm assuming I can enlarge some of the partitions once installed. I opted to install Mint on the old drive (didn't have much space left) to verify that the Satellite would even support a dual boot.

Time to clone and upgrade laptop HDD to SSD

With the great help from Laurent85, I was able to get Cinnamon 18.3 up and running along side of Win 10 on my Toshiba Satellite. Original 1TB drive is slow and seems to a bit squirrely though chkdsk never found any errors before the Mint install. That said, I will be migrating to a 2TB SSD, stretchi...

Re: Never get option to boot into Mint on Toshiba Laptop

Bingo - can get to Win10, LM, and bios. Thank you so much! Would be interested in your other potential work around when you have the time. I'm going to play a bit with this before I clone HDD to a larger SSD and replace. If you have any suggestions on that end I'd be very interested as well. Many th...

Kernel Update Levels

On my desktop running Serena 18.1, kernel updates are categorized at level 5. Just loaded Sylvia 18.3 on my laptop and the kernel update is level 4. Just curious on why the difference.
Thanks,

Re: Never get option to boot into Mint on Toshiba Laptop

Correct. Was in the process of doing just that but the Rufus created USB would not do anything but give me command line grub. So I created a new Live USB and re-installed LM. Still can't boot Mint from HDD. Running Live now. Responses once I boot from live.

I deleted the Linux partitions to re-load using the Rufus created USB. I can re-create them again easily. and re-run the commands.

Re: Never get option to boot into Mint on Toshiba Laptop

Interesting, I created a new live USB like I had done before (without Rufus), but now on boot off of advanced startup, I'm not presented with the USB option, but do see Ubuntu - which puts me into command line Grub2. In order to boot from the Live USB, I had to go into BIOS (and this is the first ti...
