Re: *SOLVED* Looking for a mechanical keyboard to use with Mint

I too love those old IBM keyboards. They are satisfying, physically, from a tactile standpoint. I am using a Logitech G610. It has Cherry Brown switches. The lights, although I just have them set to "lit," are configurable by the keyboard keys. If your'e looking for that classic, visceral ...

Re: Plasmashell high CPU bug #356479

I've done some more research on this. I haven't had kactivitymanager or plasmashell go crazy lately. Maybe it's coincidence, maybe it's related somehow to two recent changes I made: 1) I updated video drivers to newer (scary-bleeding-edge) ones. 2) I configured, compiled, & installed the new 4.1...

Re: Plasmashell high CPU bug #356479

Simple answer: KDE5 has been released when it is still in alpha-test state :p Simple solution: Avoid KDE5 longer version: 2) I'm copying a file. That's it. Did you try to turn off the animation at all? I never use desktop effect at all, doubt many people use it either. This may be a GL related prob...

Re: Dummy Output Missing Sound for Kabby Lake

The files you mention that you got from Intel and installed (GUC, HUC, & all that stuff) are video card/GPU related & don't relate to sound. You can see for yourself by doing a lsmod | grep i915 if you use the Kaby Lake's built-in GPU. You need to get current "snd" drivers, like th...

I'm not sure which. I wouldn't be scared. I've used just about e...

Re: Introducing Brain

Wizard, can I get a registration code for community.linuxmint.com? Fire up the irc client, Hexchat I think, It should auto-connect to spotchat network and in the #linuxmint-help channel, which IIRC, hexchat should auto-join. Just type in the channel: I need a code! and mintbotd will give you one fo...

Kernel 4.10.8 Stable

Any idea when we'll start seeing Kernel headers & libraries in the repositories? The 4.10.8 Stable Kernel has several hardware enhancements for Intel Kaby Lake-series CPUs (like the one I'm using). I built (and am using) the 4.10.8 Kernel now. Not only did I need to go in and do the normal Kerne...

Re: Mint 18.1 KDE no sound

Something kept killing my realtek integrated HD sound. I use this PPA every-time something breaks sound, but then I turn it off after it fixes the sound (until it breaks again, then I re-enable). I've spent hours fooling around with ALSA & Phonon and every other sound related mixer, driver, appl...

Three things: 1) more GUI configuration tools. TOOLS, TOOLS, & more TOOLS. Automate as much as possible. Computer users don't want to generally geek around, they want to show off flashy things & play games. Remove the user from the command-line. Look how popular Macintosh Apples are. BSD und...

the ease that the kernel was hacked... I expected it to be patched asap. I cannot comment on the ease with which the Ubuntu kernel was hacked, because once the way has been found to do so, it will always seem easy. About fixing it asap: well, exactly asap, as soon as possible. Even if exploiting a ...

Re: Plasmashell high CPU bug #356479

Any news on this issue? After installing some firmware updates (GPU), Mint's Linux, Serena 18.1, is now unusable. Plasmashell has the "needle pinned" with 80% 100% CPU usage. My CPU temperatures are high, the fans are blowing like a micro tornado, and the desktop reacts as slowly as that o...

Oh, and for other hobbies I like to garden. I don't know why. I hate all the digging, but there is a simple elegance to the way plants manage all of their life processes through chemical communication and no actual "thought." As simple as plants are, some of their functions remain a myster...

Introducing Brain

I go by "brain" not because I'm the smartest joe in the tool-shed, but because that's been my nick-name since a kid. I've been working with computers since 1974: IBM360 & 370 main-frames, PDP-10 & 11 mini-computers & RSTS-e via punch-cards, paper-tape, & 50 to 1200 baud aco...

Re: Buying PCI-E LAN card for getting LAN going on a ASUS Strix Z270 Kaby Lake build

I have a method that works with with Kabylake 7700K with built-in Ethernet. (I'm running a 7700K on an Asus Z270-based motherboard using Intel's built-in gigabit adapter). Out of the box Ethernet doesn't work. This fix will make it work not only on Mint Serena 18.1 (which is what I use, but presumab...
