You could try to blacklist the AC97 as here;

There is a problem with AC97 on Karmic

If you have an onbard modem try disabling that in the Bios

Try K3b, it is KDE program but works fine in Gnome, goto Synaptic and

Looks like a corrupted cache

Not sure about the second bit, are you trying to open a binary package
in gedit??
