Re: Replace mobo/processor in existing build

Okay, I can definitely do that. Thanks for the help. I appreciate it. The rest of the parts arrive on Tuesday, so I'll post back then if I run into problems.

Replace mobo/processor in existing build

I decided to upgrade my Linux box. Went from an AMD based board to an Intel board. I also replaced the RAM. Will my box still boot or do I need to do a clean install? I’ve never done this before without starting over. What if I want to backup the old programs/files from the other install to put in t...

Re: VLC won't install. Dependency problems

I’m running RetroPie on the box and it’s update script apparently did something. I never changed the PPAs for it myself. I tried removing VLC completely befor installing again, but it won’t install now. I’m fine with an older version, but how do I go back now? I’m just running

Code: Select all

Re: After update, mint fails to recognize TV as display

Thanks. I did try a cold boot after unplugging the computer this morning. I did a factory reset on the tv yesterday, so I left it plugged in for now. Turning the computer on displayed the BIOS post screen and everything seemed to be working normally after that. I just tested it quickly before headin...

After update, mint fails to recognize TV as display

I updated my computer some time last week, and since then, the computer will not display on my TV. I updated via sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade It won't even reach the post screen, actually, which is weird. I can sometimes get it to work (by work, I mean output to the display) if I plug th...

That is odd and interesting. I'm not sure why the password would appear in those fields. But at least your terminal opens now... Silver lining.

Re: Cloned drive will not boot

From the live session it is easy to copy/past the output of blkid into fstab and as for grub, the way to do it is restart OS all the while holding left Shift till you see the grub's menu. Once you see it, press "e" and now you can temporarily change any parameter with which grub is currently loadin...

Re: Cloned drive will not boot

Edit: maybe I don't have to mention it, you also have to make changes in the boot order in BIOS for it is not clear what you intend to do with the old disk - keep it inside or it goes out? The old drive will be refromatted and go back in. I've already changed the BIOS boot order, to confirm that my...

Re: Can't open Terminal

Well, it sounds related to your locale setting. Try changing your locale and see if that fixes the issue. You might be able to use your xterm shell to print out your locale environment variables too, see if anything looks off.

Re: Cloned drive will not boot

No, I think all you have to do is change the UUID(the first long number with dashes) of your old disk with the UUID of the new one in the /etc/fstab. Don't reconnect the old disk, just boot into the live session and issue the blkid to see it. Then replace UUID with the one for your new disk. It is ...

Re: Cloned drive will not boot

Wheh, what a process. So I tried clonezilla and it is unable to copy a larger partition to a smaller one, like I guessed above. I attempted to shrink the partition using gparted, but that caused the big drive to no longer boot. With this, I did a clean install of mint 18 on the smaller drive. Once i...

Re: Cloned drive will not boot

Alright, I'll give clonezilla a try. My initial guess is that dd can't handle cloning a larger partition to a smaller drive. I didn't think of this before, but that would make sense. So, I may need to reduce the size of my install partition on the 3TB drive before I clone it to the 500gb drive. I'll...

[SOLVED] Cloned drive will not boot

So I got a new 3TB hard drive to use as a giant share with my mint install and had another 500gb drive lying around. In the end, I wanted the 500gb drive to have mint installed and just use the 3TB drive for data, but I had to backup some files from the 500gb drive first. So, my master plan was to i...
