Re: Firefox freezing and causing HD to go in a spin

Well after managing to set up 4GP swap and free up 5GB on the HD I see no change. In fact it still seems worse. Before the HDD would start working and I'd have a chance to close it. But now the HDD light comes on, the pointer stutters and even trying to kill the X server fails. It's getting tot the ...

Re: Firefox freezing and causing HD to go in a spin

Your main-problem is Vista. For better performance you need to do some things in Vista. Wow. Even without booting into Windows it still causes trouble. :-D Thanks for all the hints. This may take a while... :-) PS. the better option would be remove Vista. LOL! :-P That would be the easiest! ...

Diminish browser.sessionstore.interval in Firefox.

Code: Select all

about:config -> browser.sessionstore.interval -> change value
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.sessionstore.interval
Thanks. I'll give this a shot. It could void my warranty. LOL. Didn't know I had one. :-)

Re: Firefox freezing and causing HD to go in a spin

I have the same problem and IIRC posted about it as well. At that point, I only had 2GB RAM installed. Since then I added another 2GB. The increase in RAM reduced my issue somewhat but it still happens (HD light comes on, system doesn't respond to any key input and either restarts or has to be rest...

Re: Firefox freezing and causing HD to go in a spin

No chance for working: hard drive is full, so settings and cache folders cannot work. Where is the disk is full error? There usually is some space left when it happens. I suppose that is the only linux-partition. In /dev/sda1 is XP or Vista? Yes, Vista, for when I need a Windows. :-) inxi -po | gre...

Re: Firefox freezing and causing HD to go in a spin

Also your "/" partition is too small (or too full of junk): ID-1: / size: 37G used: 34G (98%) fs: ext4 dev: /dev/sda2 LOL. It got worse after that. Actually, would you believe I found 10GB taken up by some videos and a Wine PC game, backed up wanted files and then freed all that space only to find ...

Re: Using Startup Applications has no effect in runing program to reset audio

Hello Flemur and thanks for your assistance. After reading my post I expected a "Trying to solve X by doing Y" come back. So it's nice to see someone else in the same kind of situation. I did try and follow advice on saving alsamixer settings but none worked for me and when I found amixer hoped I co...

Using Startup Applications has no effect in runing program to reset audio

Hello. I'm trying to use the Startup Applications from Preferences to run a terminal program. I need to run it in order to reset the audio settings. Since the the driver is confused about the hardware and always mutes the speakers. Because it seems to think headphones are plugged in. I'm using the a...

Re: Firefox freezing and causing HD to go in a spin

Well I maxed out the RAM to 4GB and also set aside 4GB on the HDD for swap. But it didin't help anything. In fact it's almost gone worse. Suddenly the HDD light comes on and FireFox takes no prisoners in taking the system down. Sometimes I can get lucky and kill the X server. But mostly the cursor s...

Re: Why can't my computer mount my tablet?

No it's still not solved. It's a bit of a hit and miss. I get it as well. Sometimes I get the errors. Sometimes it will mount. Not as easy on my Android 7 phone where I had to give it permission every time. My older one was better. Plug and play. Connect it up and it mounts on the desktop.

Re: Firefox freezing and causing HD to go in a spin

Too many forums. So little time... Without expansion, the C64 had 64K internally, hence the 64, with 38K available for user use left over from system overhead. The C128 had double that, minus what overhead BASIC 7.0 took. But that's what I meant with IDE. IDE is supposed to be the same idea, with a ...

Re: Firefox freezing and causing HD to go in a spin

And I have found that 20 TB of space is not enough. We're gonna need a bigger boat. To put all these hard-disks into. :-) But I have found that the best solution is to back every hard drive up. And then I find the problem becomes circular as you try and back up every thing to something else and the...

Firefox freezing and causing HD to go in a spin

Hi guys. I've had an issue with Mint I've only seen when using Firefox. Essentially all is fine up until a point where suddenly it locks up and I can hear the HD go into a spin and thrash about. Sometimes the computer just slows down and sometimes it comes back fine. Most of the time I need to resta...

Re: Thank God im an IDIOT that protects himself

As good as Linux is it still is a complicated system. I've seen an Ubuntu and my Debian distro just corrupt, possibly from some package update, and it will just wreck it. Then you go online with a working machine and look up answers. Usually a ton of solutions that never work for you. Wondering why ...

Ritmo MG-074 wireless bluetooth mouse fails to work

Hi guys. I have one of these mice and it is not working. I did have it working in the past but it was very flaky. The mouse would stop and start. Then just stop. I would pull the adapter in and out. Turn the mouse off and on. Reach for my hair... I never found what combination I needed to perform in...

Re: Audio does not work on Compaq Presario V6500

Hi SLOPES. Looks like you may have the same problem as I do. I always have to run alsamixer in a terminal to unmute and max the speaker volume to get any sound every time I boot up. What machine and audio hardware do you have?

Re: Audio does not work on Compaq Presario V6500

I'm getting some clue as to what is going on. I actually got some sound from Linux today. But it's not fixed yet. I got onto aslamixer in terminal. Checked the levels and the speakers were muted! I up the volume and run a Sound test but still hear nothing. So I then play some music again. And load u...

Re: Audio does not work on Compaq Presario V6500

Hi and thanks for the reply. I forgot to mention that I had used the Sound Settings application to test and generate sound. But was always met with silence. As it turns out I already had pavucontrol installed. So I reset the alsa.conf and restarted alsa. And loaded up PulseAudio Volume Control. I ch...

Audio does not work on Compaq Presario V6500

Hello. I was given a Compaq Presario V6500 laptop. It has a dual boot with Vista and Mint 18 Sarah Cinnamon x64. The Mint was an older version so decided to update it with a fresh install and get to know it. I have previous experience with Debian and Ubuntu. It has always had an issue in Mint with n...
