cat's really fast...
I knew it. I still like the idea of a compressed image though. I fancy XZ. I might have free space now. But I'm good at running out of space on anything even after moving files to a backup. :-D

Re: Why doesn't mkinitramfs compress ramdisks?

lz4 is supposedly faster than gzip to compress/decompress which is why Ubuntu switched to it. The trade off is a larger image file so if you have a small boot partition be careful to keep an eye on free space left when using the lz4 option with multiple kernels installed That's interesting as I tho...

Re: Why doesn't mkinitramfs compress ramdisks?

...i used a newer version of 7z above, this likely explains at least partially the difference(s). But admittedly i simply got intrigued as to why file was inconclusive in the first place, and i didn't checked such against all the currently available compression types of initramfs, just gz. Yes that...

Re: Why doesn't mkinitramfs compress ramdisks?

Thing is that you may want/need the CPU microcode to be applied really early, earlier than you being ready to uncompress anything. As such, the initramfs is now simply two concatenated cpio archives, the first with the CPU microcode uncompressed and ready without any (well, "much", cpio is really s...

Re: Why doesn't mkinitramfs compress ramdisks?

It's compressed. What you are looking at is a small prepended uncompressed cpio archive containing the CPU microcode. After re-examination I see what is going on. They've changed the format then. That's rather confusing. They don't compress the cpio like they used too. The file command needs updati...

Why doesn't mkinitramfs compress ramdisks?

Hi guys. I've just been testing mkinitramfs in a bash shell and I can't get it to work as documented. Accordingly it produces a compressed cpio archive. But I cannot get it to compress the archive. I've tried both specifying compression and leaving it to default. I keep getting images of roughly 69M...

Applications are missing menu items

Hi guys. I don't know why. But I have found some applications I install have missing menus. The menu bar is there but it won't show the menus from either left or right mouse button. In addition the interface has a plain appearance. As you can imagine it's starting to cripple my use of applications. ...

Re: Keyboard randomly stops working

Hi. Whilst I can't offer any advice I wanted to post that I have the same exact issue. Both on a ten year old Compaq laptop and now on this Lenovo laptop. It's rather strange and I've only seen it on laptops. If I have a shell open sometimes I find the laptop keyboard works there and I try and use t...

Re: Backup Of AndroidPhone data on Linux Mint PC

The most simple way would be to plug the phone in so it mounts as a filesystem. This should give you a Phone folder as well as a Card folder for any SD card plugged in. Backing up the Phone folder will give you a basic backup. However, the real Android data will be hidden beneath. So, the ADB method...

How to extract files from encrypted RAR achive?

Hello. I recently installed Mint 19. I tried to unpack files from an encrypted RAR archive on the desktop with Archive Manager. They seemed to unpack fine. But the operation went wrong. It doesn't ask for a password and files are corrupt In Mint 18 I don't recall doing anything special to enable enc...

Re: Firefox freezing and causing HD to go in a spin

Hi guys. Just a note. In my last message I added swap space. However I was checking it recently and found the swap was off! I enabled it from GParted. Then later rebooted and found it was off again. I suspect this is because the swap was added later since it is missing from the fstab. I'll n...

Re: Firefox freezing and causing HD to go in a spin

Well after managing to set up 4GP swap and free up 5GB on the HD I see no change. In fact it still seems worse. Before the HDD would start working and I'd have a chance to close it. But now the HDD light comes on, the pointer stutters and even trying to kill the X server fails. It's getting tot the ...

Re: Firefox freezing and causing HD to go in a spin

Your main-problem is Vista. For better performance you need to do some things in Vista. Wow. Even without booting into Windows it still causes trouble. :-D Thanks for all the hints. This may take a while... :-) PS. the better option would be remove Vista. LOL! :-P That would be the easiest! ...

Diminish browser.sessionstore.interval in Firefox.

Code: Select all

about:config -> browser.sessionstore.interval -> change value
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.sessionstore.interval
Thanks. I'll give this a shot. It could void my warranty. LOL. Didn't know I had one. :-)

Re: Firefox freezing and causing HD to go in a spin

I have the same problem and IIRC posted about it as well. At that point, I only had 2GB RAM installed. Since then I added another 2GB. The increase in RAM reduced my issue somewhat but it still happens (HD light comes on, system doesn't respond to any key input and either restarts or has to be rest...
