This hasn't happened for me on 3rd donation, and also unfortunately no response to me emailing to say was innacurate to note as 2nd donation.

Re: (SOLVED) How do I get back to the "old" login screen?

which leaves me relieved to not offer help again. I hope not ArtGirl. Your insight to graphics, etc. has been so helpful. Don't let one member's post dissuade you from helping. Thank you JerryF. Much appreciate. It's not only this post, and I've pretty much covered what I've learnt myself since May...

Re: (SOLVED) How do I get back to the "old" login screen?

MDM covers the login screen, and also makes it possible to work with the desktop more directly again. Included it incase helpful. I'll change 'need to install' to 'if want to', as that was a goof. But the dconf ref basically means getting everything back to how MDM runs innately in 18.1. That's not...

Re: How do I get back to the "old" login screen?

To add to earlier re-install post, and beyond all the judgements and opinions  , you need to also install dconf-editor [via Synaptic or Packages], in order to again make icons resizable ... run it, and in left column go to org > nemo > desktop and untick the option "use-desktop-grid". :) I'm ...

Re: Playing videos

I'd agree with Hoser Rob. I have no technical knowledge of which hardware runs what, being new to Linux myself. I can roughly say a decent i5/i7, with good ram and graphics card, shouldn't cause many problems with media/art/games, but then there are lots of different types of hardware per the variou...

Re: How do I get back to the "old" login screen?

The one thing I like about MDM is that there are nice themes called Arc-<color>-Userlist. They're very nice if several users are set up on one computer. Some users like a little eye candy. Shutter-012.jpg Definitely, and nice theme! Mint 19 seems to be referencing more theming options too, which is...

Re: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS to use Xorg by default

Great that Xorg is going to be default, not wayland. Wayland doesn't do pressure sensitivity for graphics (display) tablets ... many use Krita, Inkscape, Gimp, etc, including professionally, so Xorg gone (or difficult to install, for beginners/those unable to compile) would be too big a problem. Wit...

Re: Playing videos

Thanks for all the suggestions and advice. I'm still at a loss. I very much appreciate the help given by Artgirl, and I apologise for not following up at once. After three clean installs, followed by re-installs of all the software items, such as mail, accounting, back-up, and such like, I simply h...

Re: How do I get back to the "old" login screen?

Hi, I am running Mint XFCE 18.3. I was wondering if there is an easy method to switch back to the old login manager used in 18, as I want to completely customize my login screen. Thanks in advance. To add to earlier re-install post, and beyond all the judgements and opinions  , you could also...

Re: How do I get back to the "old" login screen?

In the official announcement about upgrading to LM 18.2 there is also the description, how to switch from mdm to lightdem, because this does not get changed on the upgrade process. I tried this at first on a test system with 18.1, where nothing got installed, what did not come with the Mint install...

Re: How do I get back to the "old" login screen?

After installing mdm you should remove lightdm, otherwise you get troubles in some situations (especially by shutting down). If switching back to mdm, which appears to be more or less abandonware, is a good idea is another question. Mdm isn't abandonware at all ... 18.1 with mdm inbuilt is supporte...

Re: How do I get back to the "old" login screen?

Hi, on Cinnamon 18.3 I know you can install mdm via Packages, including themes. The installation asks which you want to use as default, lightdm or mdm, and then you can run

Code: Select all

sudo mdmsetup
to access the settings. :)

Re: Why Shouldn't I Switch To Linux?

Just to add that Dukto and MegaSync are what have helped me regarding exchanging between pc/ipad. https://pkgs.org/download/dukto for the Ubuntu 16.04 deb file for Dukto. Simple to use. Pre-vpn, I needed to switch the firewall off (and have the Dukto app open on both pc/ipad). Post-vpn, I use the IP...

I appreciate the replies. Thanks, Trytip: I have, when doing clean installs, used three different disks. The last was from the latest issue of Linux Magazine. I am grateful to Artgirl for this help and support in the past. I am so frightened of doing something irreversible that I used the live disk...

Re: Playing videos

Hi Beacon :) Sorry to hear there are still issues. You must be fed up, so it may be a good time to try this?, after doing any backups: 1. format/clean reinstall 2. do updates, including microcode/kernel(s) and the multimedia/mint-meta-codecs (Packages) 3. I purge Firefox and Thunderbird: sudo apt-ge...

4.13.0-32 has made pc faster :-)

Hi, this kernel update has actually made my pc faster, lol. No problems with wifi, boot, etc, either.
(Only update I didn't do was the ndiswrapper one, after reading another post).
Very impressive, and I want to give a shout out to those working on these patches; thank you. :)

Re: How do I remove stuff installed during failed wine install attempt?

sudo apt-get purge wine works for me. I usually install wine/winetricks/Playonlinux via Packages, but solely use Playonlinux [POL}, very simply, I might add, following clear instructions (eg gamersonlinux) ... you can select 'Tools/Manage Wine versions' via POL, then the extra version you initiated...
