Re: How To Handle This Issue?

But if you download the latest mint package, wouldn't it have the latest kernel?

And so reinstalling mint from latest package would avoid any problems with kernel upgrades that I've read about?

It seems to be common enough that it's warned about in just almost every article on upgrading kernels.

Re: How To Handle This Issue?

I came here to ask about this. Kernel patch, I've heard it's actually sometimes better to just reinstall the OS rather than try to update the kernel?

That it can be unstable or make your system unusable afterwards?

online virtualbox?

I am trying to find a service that will let me use a remote computer via GUI, so I can perform functions like web browsing. Doing it via command line only (like with Amazon's EC2) won't suffice. I tried signing up with Digital Ocean but for some reason they wouldn't accept either one of my credit ca...

Re: latest skype version - notification settings per chat?

For anyone else who needs the information: they rolled out a new update and now the settings can be found in/on the group chat links (group chat names/title) above the chats.

Re: latest skype version - notification settings per chat?

So nobody else uses skype on Linux?

At least they fixed ability to change names - I'd been stuck with my old gaming handle for over a year.

Still haven't figured out per-chat notifications though.

latest skype version - notification settings per chat?

In previous skype version, it had right click option on chats to enable or disable notifications. There was also a command - /alertson or /alertsoff. Now the context menu item has been removed, and the command no longer works. So far the only option seems to be to disable notifications globally. Is ...

what makes xfce lightweight?

As from this thread , I had to switch from Cinnamon to Xfce because of freezing issues. I'm curious - what is it that makes Xfce lightweight? It seems as rich and feature packed as cinnamon does - and in fact, I like it better! It doesn't seem lightweight at all, very robust. So what is it that make...

any timer software out there similar to this for windows?

This program for windows: http://free-countdown-timer.com/ is really great. Since I'm deaf the pop-up option is invaluable. Is there anything similar for linux? Everything seems to rely on sound. I'd really like to find an alternative before I resort to running that in WINE. Online stopwatches aren'...

It's well done and has some great advice, again thank you. :)

Re: Linux Mint 17 and 18 (cinnamon) keep freezing

Thanks for the suggestion, am on Xfce now. Seems promising so far but we'll see.

One thread in common on cinnamon freezes was the fact I had chrome+flash running so am trying Firefox this time around.

Ran memtest - all a-okay there. Will post back if I encounter freezes here.

Re: Linux Mint 17 and 18 (cinnamon) keep freezing

Thanks guys but I give up. I'm just going to have to go back to a more stable distro.

Looks like this is a recurring problem for many people in Linux Mint so there has to be a bug or something improper somewhere. Hope you guys get it sorted.

Re: Linux Mint 17 and 18 (cinnamon) keep freezing

Updated from 4.4.0-21 to 72

There are two other updates that are not auto selected, linux kernel headers for development and linux firmware for kernel drivers.

Should I do those?

Linux Mint 17 and 18 (cinnamon) keep freezing

Hi, I started Linux with Zorin distro - decided to move up to a more robust OS after getting familiar with Linux. First I tried Mint 17 a few days ago, as that was the installation disc I had. Everything worked great until I realized my computer would randomly freeze. I can still use mouse but scree...
