Vlc Media Player beats Mplayer handsdown.
For some reason Vlc seems to get a lot of vague complaints from people who state it is overrated or not their cup of tea. I was always puzzled by this, but since the Linux community is known for it's diversity of opinions I always thought there might be a good reason why Vlc was overrated according ...

CeeCee321, Welcome to the forum. You could check the standard software program "System Monitor" to find out which process consumes the most processing power on your pc. When opened, click on "Processes", then click on the "CPU" tab to automatically lists the highest percentage consuming cpu processe...

Re: What sends noobs running back to Windows?
Not always this leads to a flight back to Windows, but at least one then tries to get one or the other distribution to work. That was true for me as well. I first tried LinuxMint 17 some years back. Then back to Windows7. Then Ubuntu. Then Ubuntu Studio. Then back to Windows 7 again. And fin...

Re: [SOLVED] How to format a Live Iso usb stick in LinuxMint 18 and 19
Well since UnetBootin does not seem to work for me, at least not with persistence, I ashamedly admit to using Lilli (linux live usb creator), works great, never fails. I don't see why the "good" programs for linux are not in the repos, and have to be installed via PPAs. RickNS, your suggested softw...

Re: Timeshift frustration
Timeshift should be optional not forced. Timeshift should not be activate when doing a clean install. You can DEselect the option in Timeshift after a clean install of LM19 to NOT make any backups at all. You can choose to never use Timeshift and use any other backup program you like in LinuxMint 19.

Re: Viewing forum messages
Snowshed1, I just recently learned about a method by searching the forum with Google. Works better than the search engine of the forum if you want to find something really specific. you can enter numerous search words after the following: site:forums.linuxmint.com (add your other search words) You c...

There is another Chromium-based browser that says they have taken extra to strip out ALL the Google stuff https://iridiumbrowser.de/ Great link Jimallyn! Another great initiative for a privacy browser! Never heard of that one before. I will try that one, because for some sites it can be handy to ha...

Re: [SOLVED] How to format a Live Iso usb stick in LinuxMint 18 and 19
I've reused live USB sticks a few times, and the ISO burning/writing software takes care of that by itself. Remember the warning "all data on stick will be lost". RickNS, which burning software did you use? My problem with trying to reuse a live Iso usb stick began when the designated Iso burn soft...

Blue Monday is coming soon! Anyone kept their new year's resolution?
Blue Monday is THE most depressing day of the year. There is a hocus pocus "formula" that calculates on which monday of January the most people already have broken their New Year's resolutions and are basically depressed about the knowledge that "nothing changes on New Year's day " Blue Monday is co...

Re: chrome or firefox?
I have an old pc and I use the Linux graphics software (nouveau). I have compared Chromium with Firefox, playing HD videos and Firefox was way better. But it seems that if you have a good graphics card with hardware acceleration that Chromium has got better video performance. I prefer the basic sett...

[SOLVED] How to format a Live Iso usb stick in LinuxMint 18 and 19
I had an abondoned Live Iso usb stick lying around. I wanted to put another bootable Linux distro Iso on it. But I noticed I could NOT format the former Live Iso usb stick, no matter what I tried. I could NOT format the Live Iso usb stick with the standard LinuxMint program "Discs". I could NOT form...

Re: SSD is beginning to make serious inroads on storage
Interesting thread. Still the price (relative to external harddisc) is keeping me back from buying them to store my video collection on them though. But I am considering buying a small external SSD to clone my small sized LinuxMint OS to. In 2 longterm studies I read it is mentioned that having a ba...

Re: weird audio issue after 'initramfs-tools' update? 18.1 MATE
adobe flash plugin has been updated quite recently as well. A few sporadic sites still use that format. Just a thought. By the way I have had similar problems like you have described, occur to me as well, but very rarely and I always thought it was just a defect of that particular video I was trying...

Re: I want my VLC to be a dark theme, just like the rest of my mint (using Mint Y Dark)
Yes, your first tip to rename the vlc folder to vlc.orig has worked! Great tip man. Thanks alot! I was really worrying I couldnt watch movies anymore. Those qt settings in Vlc (in the extended preferences) really made my vlc disappear completely. All ends well though. And I have learned a bit about ...

Re: I want my VLC to be a dark theme, just like the rest of my mint (using Mint Y Dark)
I found 2 Vlc config files thanks to your tip about showing hidden files: However I couldnt immdiately find your earlier mentioned file called "config/vlc", but I found 2 Vlc config files with somewhat different names. I post the contents of them both below. One vlc config file is called: vlcrc Cont...

Re: I want my VLC to be a dark theme, just like the rest of my mint (using Mint Y Dark)
I tried to be helpful by trying out several theme settings myself in order to be able to point the op in the right direction with his request for a dark desktop theme in Vlc. But now I have totally screwed up my Vlc Mediaplayer. It wont open anymore. Not even after reinstall. Here is what I did: I w...
