Samba Share Access from Windows 10, Server

It's my first time setting up a samba share. I have been trying to get this working for hours. I have made a samba share on a USB Drive connected to my Mint 18.2 laptop. I can access this ok on a Win10 VM on Virtualbox with NAT. The VM is stored locally and ip is 10.0.2.x set to name: workgroup My w...

Is there a linux deployment tool out there?

Hi,

I work with Microsoft System Center (SCCM) and App-V application virtualisation.
I was wondering if there are similar tools out there for Linux that can deploy a customised linux image to multiple computers and also a tool that can virtualise apps?

Re: Data loss on laptop when battery died

There is a setting in power management: when battery is critically low "do nothing" is the only option I get? It's a drop-down list - are you sure that is the only option ?. yes that is the only option i have which i was surprised to see. i expected suspend to be there. I know i have disabled hiber...

Data loss on laptop when battery died

I was running on battery then at around 5% i saw the Mint logo and the laptop shut down. I thought this would go into standby so when i plug in the adapter my apps and data would be there but I was wrong. I had to start from scratch. Is there a setting i can do to prevent this in future. There is a ...

Re: Best way to Backup and Restore Mint and Data

I have found a good way to do what i want. I have formatted my usb to ext4 and encrypted it in the disk manager. I am using lucky backup to sync files and folders with a cron job added. I have setup Aptik and it's great just what I needed. I am trying to run this on the command line but its not work...

Re: Consider replacing VLC with SMPlayer in Linux Mint 18.2

OK I have been using SMPlayer a lot lately but it just cannot compete with VLC for file type playback. I just tried to play some MP4's in SMPlayer and it only plays the audio not video. In VLC and XPlayer these play fine. I have been using SMTube with SMPlayer to play youtube vids/music but I just l...

Re: Can I Re-Partition Drive into 2 OS and Home?

How much RAM do you have? I have 16 gb of RAM and I have eliminated a swap partition on every single distro that I use. There is simply no need for a swap partition in 2017. Actually as a note I have never used a swap partition. They are a remnant of the past. Their time has gone. Selection_313.png...

Re: Newbie Forum Sticky Post (Please Read)

My personal point of view is: If you want to make new Linux Mint users turn away from Linux Mint, send them to this thread. The initial idea may have been good. But it started to get off the track on the very first pages already. The longer a thread, the less likely it is that it will be helpful. L...

Re: Can I Re-Partition Drive into 2 OS and Home?

What happens if I max out my swap or don't have one and max the Ram does it crash? I heard swap is bad for SSDs too not sure how relevant it is these days. OK so having a data partition means your using that partition for your home files and leaving the actual home drive empty? I found this tutorial...

Re: Can I Re-Partition Drive into 2 OS and Home?

Cool so I will set my root to 20GB.
I don't hibernate only suspend so with 8GB Ram i am thinking 2GB Swap should be enough.
This should free up some disk space and save me upgrading my SSD.

Re: Can I Re-Partition Drive into 2 OS and Home?

Yes you are right I would like to try other interfaces like Xfce and Mate and other distros. I will probably test distro's in VirtualBox but it would be nice to run them as a main OS. I am not sure what you mean about sharing a data partition compared with home? How much disk space is recommended fo...
