Re: vpn

I have used PIA, Nordvpn, Airvpn, and others. I do not feel PIA vets all of their servers very well (they have tons), and the interface is somewhat lacking. I know they sponsor Mint, so I'm happy for that. Everyone will have an opinion on this, but I have chosen Airvpn because of the network lock fe...

Re: If your Linux machine is lost or stolen is there anything like what Apple has?

Has anyone made anything like this this for Linux? Thank you Apologies for this overly long post, it's a condition of mine. Well, first of all, to the above comments, there are many ways for all kinds of parties to "continually monitor" you if they so choose, regardless of your operating system. "T...

Re: Does anyone use a DasKeyboard? Key remapping question.

After trying every apropos my mind could appropriate, I think I might be able to solve this by myself. It might be something that is so easy that it's considered a rite of passage. That is what I am going to interpret this thread as. So I went deep into the x11_keysysms files, and there is a lot of ...

Does anyone use a DasKeyboard? Key remapping question.

Searched the forums for this, but coming up with no answer. My DasKeyboard appears to be recognized but is assigned the default generic 105 profile, as can be found in the keyboard layouts tool. https://www.daskeyboard.com/model-s-professional/ This is my keyboard, in all its noisy glory. I am deali...

Re: ATTN!...Intel CPU owners (Spectre & Meltdown flaws)

It is meant to say cpu_insecure and that is what it will say so from now on in patched kernels when running under affected processors. It won't say such on: 1) unpatched kernels & 2) corrected processors if / when they appear in the market... Thank you! This thread has cleared up many things for me...

This was in "introduce yourself" so I thought the OP was like "Time for a new flavor... ME". That would have been hilarious.

Re: How to update your kernel for Meltdown

I just installed Xfce from an 18.2 DVD installer on sdb, went right from the fresh install to "update to 18.3" in Update Manager, it worked just fine. Very smooth, very nice. Still using MATE though. We'll see who wins in the end!

Re: Keyboard not working in USB 3 port

I'm surprised DASKB's would not work in USB3... I don't know how many other keyboard models do this, as this is the first "top shelf" keyboard I've ever used, but both USB cables that are paired on the DAS have to be used for it to work. A combination of USB and the old school DIN connector that com...

Re: ATTN!...Intel CPU owners (Spectre & Meltdown flaws)

... Are you sure you have updated the kernel as well as the intel-microcode? I followed all guidelines to the best of my ability given the confusion present in all parties involved. Per above post, the KAISER (meltdown relevant) part of the patch was addressed in the 4.4 update manager release note...

Can you spot the part I'm scared of? Does anyone happen to know what this means? if this is the wrong place for this, I'll go wandering off into the distance. ...i assume you mean the cpu_insecure part? That's exactly what it should report... https://askubuntu.com/questions/992137/how-to-check-that...

Re: ATTN!...Intel CPU owners (Spectre & Meltdown flaws)

Yeah, so I was one of the idiots that went straight to intel to download the microcode, the first stuff. I believe this put my microcode to the 0x22. Then Linux pushed the minty microcode on, which I installed, and that turned the 0x22 into a 0x23. Both before I installed any microcode and the two m...

Oooooooh a level 4 kernel update , The sky is falling ! The sky is falling ! Let's all panic cuz using Grub to boot in to the previously installed kernel is so damd difficult right? LMFAO ! It is if you've never done it before. Knowledge isn't an entitlement to arrogance. Be nice! people come...

Re: Security notice: Meltdown and Spectre

I do believe that this cluster<BLEEP> is the visible evidence of what happens when the DEVELOPERS panic. That's just a guess on my part, of course, but... I'd be more than a little surprised if it turns out that I was wrong here. Hopefully, xenopeek (or someone equally capable) will be able to serv...

Re: I'm sick of FUD and misinformation regarding Linux Mint

The whole idea of FOSS, the whole ideology, is that it spreads. I have had enough experience with the "I was here first" division of geekdom that I can kind of see through it. Partly because I've been there myself at various times in my life. All operating systems will continue to have problems. The...

Re: How to update your kernel for Meltdown

Do you think NoScript is necessary if I use FF inside Firejail sandbox ? You should do what makes you comfortable. Your browser is already immune on its own to JavaScript attacks that would use these bugs. (If you don't use Flash, Java or other such unsafe plugins.) I don't even know man. I feel re...

Re: Security notice: Meltdown and Spectre

Make sure you enable "always show kenel updates" in the update manager  Ok, I may as well do a minor venting here. What you suggest goes against good practice and advice for new users. This patch wasn't dealt with in the best way, imo. A jump from 4.10 stable generic to the newest build of 4....

Re: What's the news on updating Compiz for MATE? Is it being maintained? Where is it coming from? Much confusion.

Have you tried contacting Martin Wimpress? IIRC, he's interested in compiz as well. I thought at first that you were joking. I do not know who Martin Wimpress is, I have no problem contacting him, though he looks like a very busy fellow. I am getting the feeling like maybe I should start letting Co...

Re: What's the news on updating Compiz for MATE & Linux 19?

I am resusitating my own thread. Apologies. So the same version of compiz that comes on 18.2 is on 18.3: 0.9.12.2 This filled me with a mild ennui, so I figured I'd check what the latest status was. I use Linux MATE 18.2. I installed MATE 18.3 on a separate drive to test things like Timeshift/Luckyb...

Re: compiz --replace creates problem

It's quirky. Compiz --replace isn't a smooth landing. Whenever I use it on new installs I log out and back in, then things seem to be stable. You can set a replacement manager, like Marco, if compiz crashes because you've gone overboard with settings changes or graphics fx. This has worked fine for ...

Re: I'm using a VPN but my neighbors see what I do?

I might have misinterpreted your post, but it sounds more like harassment than anything to do with Linux - you need to either confront your neighbours or contact the Police. I had a similar experience with a neighbor who was observing and commenting on my internet use. Actually, he tried to do a lo...
