Re: copy paste doesn't work but dragging does

If your target directory is in List mode rather than Icon mode it may be difficult to Copy and Paste while a drag and drop will still work. Switching to Icon mode in the target directory will give you a blank spot to paste a file you have previously marked with right-click and copy. Another option t...

Re: Add "Desktop Toolbar like windows" on Cinnamon

The previous post points you to Plank. It is pretty good, I use it on a machine with Pop!OS running the Budgie DE. Docky is another simple one. I prefer Cairo-Dock as it has a lot more themes and flexibility. No need to go to a ppa, all of these are in the Software Manager. Search on Dock or Plank. ...

Re: Live Booting Mint 18.3

Depends on how you tried to install it on a "partition on the HDD". The simplest method if you do not want Windows 7 at all is to use the "Erase disk" option for Installation Type. The top choice on that screen. It will completely reformat the HDD and place the bootloader in the proper place if you ...

Re: With which specs will a new pc last for the next 10 years?

I didn't want to get into too much about reducing power consumption, since this is a Linux Mint Forum. But quickly, a few things - got rid of the microwave. Switched to old fashioned stove-top peculator on a gas stove, if you have electric stove, no savings. Switched all lights to led. Wife refuses ...

Re: Reinstating AutoLogin

If you are not using anything that requires the keyring, then go for the auto login. I forgot to mention that some email programs do use the keyring as well, but as far as I know, Thunderbird does not. If you are just accessing your email via FireFox, then there is no problem there either. Sorry to ...

Re: Reinstating AutoLogin

I've used auto login for years and never had a problem. My computer is next to my bed which because of disabilities, I don't venture far from. So as far as security, if they've gotten this far, I am already screwed. I have seen that keyring issue when I tried Opera and Chromium. They didn't provide ...

Re: cd burner?

I am also a big fan of k3b, I especially like it for burning bootable CD/DVDs for use on older machines that won't boot from a USB. I am currently on Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.3. It's been so long, don't even remember how I installed it. It's in both the Software Manager and the Synaptic Package Manage...

Re: With which specs will a new pc last for the next 10 years?

I concur with those above that say an i5 3.4ghz or better CPU. A motherboard with built-in Intel graphics and at least 8gb RAM. Pretty much what I have on an ASUS Maximus motherboard. Low power usage was a concern for me as well since I run mine off Solar Power. I have an EVGA 500 watt power supply....

Re: Wireless Dongle TL-WN823N will not work unless plugged in after booting

You don't mention how you managed to get it running. Some methods are better than others. It has been my experience that the method described here by jeremyb31 is the most reliable. https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=256189&p=1381597&hilit=rtl8192eu#p1381597 It may also have something...

Re: MINT 18.2 Cinnamon : something wrong with my laptop touchpad

Try installing the libinput driver. It seems to work better on Synaptics Touchpad than the Synaptics driver. Go figure. sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-libinput It is the default driver for Ubuntu and Linux Mint 18.3. You'll be able ot see the change with this. Where id is the the number lis...

Re: need a little help here, internet connection sharing problem

On the surface it looks like you did the right stuff. But rather than change the existing Wired Connection, I added a new one. Click on your network icon and choose "Network Connections". Select Ethernet then the "Add" button Leave Ethernet in the drop-down box and click "create" I gave it the name ...

Re: How to prioritize the saved network connections ?

I don't know how to set a priority. I simply turn off Automatic connection on all except the main one, When I need to choose a different one I click to connect,
Not sure if this is what you need.

Re: Broadcom WiFi works in live image but not after installation

I don't know how to add a USB as a source but in Synaptic Package Manager you can add a CD. However, as you surmised the drivers are on the Live USB stick. If you search the USB from Nemo for "b" you'll easily find: bcmwl-kernel-source_6.30.223.271+bdcom-0ubuntu1~1.1_amd64.deb Double click to instal...

Re: Permissions on USB stick- I think

If you want to use a GUI, you can if you use the Cinnamon default file manager, Nemo. Open the pendrive in Nemo. Right click on a blank area. Click "open as root". Enter password. Of course that user will have to have to have been setup as an "Administrator". Obviously, if you are doing it from your...

Re: Need help installing Linux Mint, all intel agencies trying to stop me

If you are having trouble creating a bootable "Live" USB in Windows, Rufus, a free download, is your best bet. If building one yourself is not an option, you can buy one from the Linux Mint store for $15. Make sure you pick the correct, 32 or 64 bit, version. As far as using an external HDD versus a...

Re: No wifi in my hp laptop

You may want to spend $20 and buy a USB WiFi adapter. Perhaps someone can list here a really good one. I use several that worked right out of the box. But I am reluctant to recommend them as I know that at least 2 of them no longer do as the manufacturer recently changed chipsets.

Re: No wifi in my hp laptop

It all depends on which WiFi card is in your laptop. The inxi command listed in a previous post will help you determine that. If indeed it is a Broadcom then since it is a new machines my guess is that you will need the newer drivers - broadcom-sta(wl) - That is the one I needed for my new ASUS PCI ...

Re: Acer E1 572P Drivers

Laptop manufactures won't always know everything about Linux Mint, or Linux in general. While 99% of laptop hardware drivers are already in the Linux kernel there are a few instances where you will have to load drivers, but not usually from the manufacturer, but from a Linux repository. Linux driver...
