Re: Recommend a hard drive?

If your Laptop can take a 9mm thick drive, I would suggest a WD Black 1Tb. Good price, 7200rpm with better throughput. If you can only take a 7mm drive, then look at a SSD. cheers Lanser WD Black seems to be what I need, and I found a 1TB in my price range. I've heard from others that WD Blues last...

Re: Recommend a hard drive?

...yeah, my budget is more $100-ish at the far upper limit. And that's saving up for a while. $50-$70 is more where I need to be.

*sigh* Sometimes newegg has pretty decent sales...

EDIT: Completely forgot to mention, I need 2.5. Sorry about that!

Re: Recommend a hard drive?

How much storage space do you need? I would get an SSD if it's in your budget. Night and day. 250GB is too small, 500GB is okay, 1TB would be ideal, can't see myself needing more than that. And yeah, half the reason I'm looking at new hard drives *before* my current one starts failing is I'd like t...

Re: Recommend a hard drive?

For your HDD , to know it's health please use SMART tool. Your laptop should be having a SATA HDD. Hence you can get a HDD with SATA interface Oh no, I'm not THAT clueless. Though it's probably better to assume someone doesn't know ...

SOLVED: Recommend a hard drive?

My hard drive was scavenged from an old DELL laptop that stopped working for non-hard drive reasons, and I think it'll keep going a bit longer, but I want to have a plan in mind when it starts to fail. I was looking at fancier hard drive options, such as hybrid drives like firecuda (not that I'm lik...

Re: What is your preferred backup program?

I have yet to get Backup Tool to work properly. It always stalls out on me. Going to poke at some of these.

Re: What made you switch to Linux Mint?

Ubuntu 17.10 onwards WILL use Gnome Shell as the default GUI. Yeah, right! Canonical's erratic decision-making concerning the shell (Gnome-->Unity-->Gnome) gives me very little basis to believe it. Regardless, I like how Mint looks and works better. But my mistake. (also yeah what the heck ar...

Re: What made you switch to Linux Mint?

I wasn't a fan of Windows 8 (still have 7 on my other partition for when I absolutely need Windows), but I used to use Ubuntu. My reason for switching from Ubuntu to Mint is, admittedly, a little shallow; I like GNOME, and am very much not a fan of Unity. It's not even a performance issue, though of...

Re: PIA works from USB but not installed on hard drive

That did it! I feel foolish for not considering the encrypted home folder as a potential issue, but it's all straightened out now, and running from the app in 18.1 prevents the DNS leak(-ish problem) too! Thank you very much for your help.

I encrypted the home folder. Do you think that caused the problem? It would be a difference between the two, and since the files are IN the home folder, I could see it having an effect...

SOLVED: PIA works from USB but not installed on hard drive

So I've been banging my head against a wall for a while here, and to be honest this might belong in the hardware section, but I'm putting it here because I haven't had this problem with any other program. I initially installed Cinnamon 18.1, but have also tested with 17.3 and 17.1. In all cases, I w...
