Re: trouble with Oracle Java updates

Hello, sleeper12. Hm. I wonder a bit how removing OpenJDK will help in a case where genuine Oracle Java has been installed through a PPA? Re: Mint Alternatives

You might want to try Mate, Xfce or even LMDE before leaving Mint entirely. That said, I use Antix & Puppy Linux at times, but any alternate OS involves a learning curve.

Re: Does TLP start automatically?

You only need to enter that command once, then it should start automatically at each boot. To check if it's enabled run:

Code: Select all

 sudo tlp-stat -s

Re: Could not refresh list of updates

Good. :) As a general rule, try to avoid PPA's. See here:

Re: Could not refresh list of updates

Have you tried clicking 'Restore the default settings' in Software Sources? Then 'Refresh' in Update Manager.
If that doesn't help, check this thread:

Re: Firewalld icon missing from Panel

If you right click an empty space in the panel, then click 'Add to Panel', can you find & add it there?

On recent Mint releases software-properties-gtk is a symlink to software-sources. Bad luck, I guess, it will not work inside a terminal.
Ok, so is reinstall Mint the only solution then?

Re: Repositories are causing my computer to fail

I would think a reinstall would be the easiest solution. You could search for each of those items in Package Manager & install them there, but might not solve anything. Just my opinion unless someone has a better idea.

You might try Timeshift (assuming you set it up before this happened).

Re: Best Linux OS for older devices

You also need to consider if your machine is PAE or non-PAE. Antix works well on older computers & it's non-PAE.
https://antixlinux.com/

Whatever OS you decide on is going to involve a learning curve, so be prepared for that.
By the way, Peppermint 9 is PAE.

I'm not sure what it is you see. Is it a search icon? Does it go away if you click on it or on an empty space nearby?
