Re: need help installing print driver (Brother MFC-L2710DW)

...After that first install Driver Install Tool. Next install Linux printer driver. Thanks! I'm still a bit confused about one thing. After I gunzip and run the driver tool (using BASH command line as given on download page), does that automatically find and install the drivers from the deb package...

need help installing print driver (Brother MFC-L2710DW)

18 months has passed since I switched to Linux and with 180 posts in the LM forum under my belt, I shouldn't be asking newbie questions. But here I am again. My newest toy (Brother MFC-L2710SW All-in-One) has me pulling my hair out. The installation guide advises to insert included driver & utility ...

When you select a file to add, do you make sure to click on the checkbox next to the file name you want added?
Oh, $h&t. I didn't even notice the checkboxes. I was simply selecting files I wanted to add. Duh.

@phd21, thanks for tips on PeaZip.

Re: can't add files to existing zip files (Thunar 1.6.11)

Did you install "p7zip-full"? Thanks for your reply. p7zip was installed (apparently) by the LM 18.2 installation disk, not p7zip-full, so I just installed the full version and that didn't fix the issue. BTW, I now see that the archive GUI is actually File-roller 3.16.5, not part of Thunar. Thanks ...

Re: can't add files to existing zip files (Thunar 1.6.11)

I would be grateful if someone running Thunar file manager could confirm that "Add Files" works properly with an existing archive (zip) file, or not. At least that way I'll know if something is broken on my end.

can't add files to existing zip files (Thunar 1.6.11)

I have a number of zip files I created using Archive Manager. I'm unable to 'add' files to any existing zip file. I first tried to drag-and-drop a file onto the zip file. When that didn't work, I opened the folder containing the zip file as Root, but still unable to drag-and-drop. So I opened the zi...

Re: question about setting up dual boot w/Win10

I generally find that dual boot causes more trouble than it's worth. Instead, I have 2 boot partitions, then drop into bios when I want the alternative boot. That's exactly what I plan to do. The recommended tutorials explain what I need to know to do that. Honesly, I don't care to dive into Win10 ...

Re: question about setting up dual boot w/Win10

Thank you for pointing me to these helpful tutorials. I was familiar enough with installing LM18 not to need a tutorial on that part, but the dual-boot and partitioning details would definitely cause trouble.

question about setting up dual boot w/Win10

I'm looking at a used laptop for my wife (Dell E6540 with i7 4th gen). It has Win10 installed. How much trouble would it be to set up dual boot with Linux Mint?

Re: need help running Plex Media Server (failed to execute... x-www-browser)

Double check you've got Firefox set as your web browser in preferred applications. How exactly did you manually upgrade? And why are you using a version of Firefox missing 17 months worth of security patches? Yes, Mozilla Firefox is listed as my preferred browser under Settings Manager / Preferred ...

What happens if you just enter "localhost:32400/manage" in your browser address bar?
That works. It launches PMS in Firefox. Thanks!
I created a bookmark, which resolves the problem. But how do I repair the launcher command?

need help running Plex Media Server (failed to execute... x-www-browser)

When I attempt to run Plex Media Server, I get this error: "failed to execute... x-www-browser" I don't use PMS very often so I don't know what changes I made to my system that could have caused this. One possibility is a recent manual upgrade to my browser (Firefox v55 to v56). . Screenshot_2018-11...

Sorry to jump in, but did that actually work without escaping the spaces
As shown in my previous post, I added quotes around the path, something I recall from XP. I wasn't aware of using forward slash to escape the spaces. Thanks.

Re: sorting out file associations

Thanks for explaining how to set up the command in Launcher. I didn't consider that .jar is a data file, not an executable. It now works fine, so I'm done trying to troubleshoot the file association issue with shortcuts. I may come back to this later to satisfy my curiosity as to why it didn't work ...

Re: sorting out file associations

Yes, it's a symbolic link. When I right click on the desktop icon and click Properties, the "Kind" field says "link to [path]/internetconnectivitymonitor.jar" (see screenshot, below). As you can see, it's currently is associated with Archive Manager, but if I change that to Java Runtime Environment ...

Re: sorting out file associations

Interestingly, if I repair the .zip association and then open the ICM .jar file directly, it works (meaning, .jar is still associated with JRE, not Archive Manager). However, the shortcut to the .jar file is still associated with Archive Manager. Like I said, it's as if xfce is treating the desktop ...

Re: sorting out file associations

Ok. I just saw your edited post and made the change. However, that broke ICM desktop shortcut. Is this an XFCE bug? Desktop shortcuts surely are not zip files?!

Re: sorting out file associations

Ok, so .jar files should currently open correctly, right? Now just add this at the end of the file and you should be good: application/zip=file-roller.desktop; Might be you'll have to restart nemo for the change to take effect. Thanks. Before I make the change, I should point out that I'm running x...

Re: sorting out file associations

Sorry typo my end - the full command is cat ~/.config/mimeapps.list Thanks. I should have realized the cat was missing 8) BTW, I should clarify that to make the .jar file run, I have to open "Properties" for the ICM desktop shortcut context menu, then select JRE in the "Open with" field. Otherwise,...
