Re: need some help with DOSEMU sound settings

If no one here is familiar with dosemu sound settings, is there another forum where I might find help?

need assistance disabling Network Time Protocol (NTP)

When I first installed Linux, I changed the "Time and Date" GUI configuration setting to 'Manual' so theoretically there shouldn't be any ntp traffic, right? HOWEVER, surprisingly, 3 months later, my system clock is still within 1 second of 'official' time, which in my experience, is highl...

need some help with DOSEMU sound settings

I use dosemu to run an old DOS accounting program. The only problem is there's no sound. The program is supposed to 'beep' the system speaker as confirmation for various operations. I reviewed the dosemu docs but I'm new to Linux (especially low-level settings such as these), so I could use some hel...

Re: no archive attribute / flag in file manager (Xfce/Thunar)

Thanks for the quick replies. It makes sense to use the timestamp to drive backup logic. I've also been using the archive attribute in WinXP to assist with a manual synchronization strategy involving an old DOS accounting program that both my wife and I use. But I came up with an another way to acco...

no archive attribute / flag in file manager (Xfce/Thunar)

I recently switched to Linux. When I open a folder in File Manager (Thunar) and select 'Configure Columns', I was surprised there's no 'attribute' column. In particular, I was hoping to find an archive flag that can be used in a data backup script. In WinXP, the archive flag also provides a visual q...

Re: new to Linux, a couple of issues with LO Calc

@Ben, thanks for the tip. I wasn't aware of FreeOffice. I'll be setting up my existing XP install in a virtual machine, as I have a number of apps that can't be migrated to Linux, so I'll probably just continue using MS Office. I need to see how much hassle it is to manage documents between Linux an...

Re: new to Linux, a couple of issues with LO Calc

Ok, I see what you're saying. I never bother with the "show comment" option since I can simply mouse-hover to see it, so I didn't realize that option gets the handles. In Excel, you also get the handles when you create or edit a comment. Hmm... this means that whenever I create or edit a c...

Re: 1st go-round with Clonezilla... I have two questions

I use SDelete . It has functionality to securely erase an HDD or individual files in addition to zeroing the drive's free space. That Microsoft page says that it requires Vista or newer, but I used to use SDelete on XP, so I'm not sure whether I was using an older version or whether the current one...

Re: 1st go-round with Clonezilla... I have two questions

...if you're using an HDD, you may need to zero your free space in order for it to compress well, as free space that still contains remnants of old files isn't going to compress the way a block of zeros is (if you're using dd to image your drive). As noted in my sig, my new machine has an SSD, so w...

Re: 1st go-round with Clonezilla... I have two questions

When cloning to a file, CZ only requires the destination to be large enough to hold the compressed image. When cloning device-to-device, the destination must be the same or larger--a one block difference (dest. smaller) will cause the clone to fail. That's not been my experience, and in fact was th...

Re: 1st go-round with Clonezilla... I have two questions

I posted the question about Clonezilla boot stick dismounting in their forum @ sourceforge: https://sourceforge.net/p/clonezilla/discussion/Clonezilla_live/thread/2bfdb6d4/?limit=25 Something interesting just happened. I used Clonezilla to backup my Linux system to a 16GB USB stick for off-site stor...

Re: 1st go-round with Clonezilla... I have two questions

If you've made the wrong selection, (as you pointed out there is no "back"), use the tab key to select cancel, eventually you will be taken to a window that allows you to start over with partimage home deselected. (also reboot, poweroff, or start over keeping partimage home, which never w...

Re: 1st go-round with Clonezilla... I have two questions

I just realized the USB mount issue only occurs after running Clonezilla. Apparently when exiting CZ, the bootable USB stick on which Clonzilla is installed is dismounted, because when the system reboots, it's no longer mounted. I have to pull the stick and reinsert if I want to run CZ again. In lea...

Re: 1st go-round with Clonezilla... I have two questions

I don't mind the topic diversion to my thread (h/w solution is an interesting possibility!), but I would be grateful if someone would address #2 in my previous post... Every time my system reboots, any connected USB sticks are no longer mounted. I have to remove and reinsert to mount. I found an int...

Re: "operation not supported" error, can't copy files to new partition!

Thanks! Yup, that worked. So is there a way to set this up so it works automatically after reboot? I haven't learned how to set up a script (like old DOS .bat files). Maybe it's time I learned?

"operation not supported" error, can't copy files to new partition!

I created a 30GB data partition on my SSD. Upon reboot, the new partition was not mounted, so I looked up the UUID: sudo blkid Then I added the following line to fstab (as per: https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/1513)... UUID=1e587ed8-1c2e-4843-a1d2-7ddfaca6c3e0 /media/Plex ext4 rw,suid,d...

Re: 1st go-round with Clonezilla... I have two questions

Thanks for all the replies! My destination HDD is plenty big enough (3TB). I set the partition size to 30GB temporarily because my USB drive happened to have 30GB of unallocated space. I am guessing that you are getting caught by a pre-processing step that first makes sure the destination is bigger ...

Re: need assistance installing Plex Media Server

Don't anyone snicker... My trusty (or should I say crusty, but definitely not rusty) XP machine, custom built in 2008 with then-2-year-old hardware, still kicks ass for pretty much everything I need to do... except browsing, and occasionally, Plex. I tweaked 'er out years ago. She has only 18 proces...

Re: 1st go-round with Clonezilla... I have two questions

Thanks for your reply. I think I have seen that tutorial before. It's a good tutorial, but it doesn't solve my problem. Like the option description I checked, the tutorial implies that a partition backup doesn't image the empty space. Is this correct? I recall reading another thread here where someo...
