Re: [SOLVED THE HARD WAY] failed to mount windows share: invalid argument

Since no one replied, I solved this problem the hard way. I restored the sda2 partition from a backup, and reinstalled all the upgrades since that backup. The fact that I have my /home directory path on a separate partition made this a lot less painful than it otherwise would have been. I guess I'll...

Re: failed to mount windows share: invalid argument

Here's the error I get when I click on on Browse Network / Windows Network in the left pane on Thunar (the previously noted error is when I click on a bookmarked shared folder): Failed to open "Windows Network" Failed to retrieve share list from server: No such file or directory. Given this error, i...

Re: bizarre cause & effect: after Firefox loses default browser status, email links redirect to localhost:3240 (Plex ser

Is this [transcoding] even a thing, these days? The last Plex version that runs under XP (0.9.9.14, released in 2013) can only render a handful of video formats natively. I can't recall which ones, but it must rely on the CPU to transcode the most common formats like .mp4 and .avi. If you PM me, I'...

Re: bizarre cause & effect: after Firefox loses default browser status, email links redirect to localhost:3240 (Plex ser

I've been running Plex on my XP machine for years. I don't have that much content on my PC but it's nice to be able to access it from any TV in the house! I'm still running the legacy version on my XP machine. I only load it when I want to watch something. Otherwise, that system goes to standby when...

[SOLVED THE HARD WAY] failed to mount windows share: invalid argument

I have a Linux machine (LM 18.2 xfce) and two XP machines on my local network. Until today I could reliably access shared folders on both XP machines from the Linux machine (although I haven't yet figured out how to access Linux from XP, but that's another conversation). Now I can access my wife's X...

Re: bizarre cause & effect: after Firefox loses default browser status, email links redirect to localhost:3240 (Plex ser

Ok, in the thread linked in the previous comment, I found this: the "Debian Sensible Browser" is just what is considered the default. The program sensible-browser is actually only a script that calls up an installed browser. It's not a browser itself. That explains why Firefox is the default even th...

Re: bizarre cause & effect: after Firefox loses default browser status, email links redirect to localhost:3240 (Plex ser

Thanks for reply. Preferred Applications / Web Browser is set to "Debian Sensible Browser". That's odd, I just checked Firefox again it it reports it is the default browser. How can that be? And what is Debian Sensible Browser anyway?

bizarre cause & effect: after Firefox loses default browser status, email links redirect to localhost:3240 (Plex server)

When I opened Firefox earlier today, I got a pop-up warning asking if I want FF to be my default browser. That's odd since FF has always been set to be the default browser. I selected OK and forgot about it. Then later something really odd happened. I clicked on a fedex tracking link in an email (fr...

Re: [SOLVED] Does Firefox get its UI font specs from the o/s, and if so, how to change?

Does anyone know if there's a CSS statement that would adjust the bookmark container size on the Bookmark Menu bar? With trial & error I adjusted the font size in UserChrome.css so that the same bookmarks appear across the Bookmarks Menu bar on both machines, but on the Linux machine, the font size ...

Re: Does Firefox get its UI font specs from the o/s, and if so, how to change?

Thanks Flemur. I made changes to css many years ago (tabs on bottom) and ported that over from my XP Firefox profile, so this is not unfamiliar to me. Not sure why I didn't think of that. Thanks for the code!

Re: Does Firefox get its UI font specs from the o/s, and if so, how to change?

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/theme-font-size-changer/ Thanks. I just installed. When I click the icon, it opens a page with buttons to change Theme background color and Theme text color, but nothing else! The page displays a message about Firefox's new extension system and request...

Re: Does Firefox get its UI font specs from the o/s, and if so, how to change?

Even when I use preferences to set them to 16 pitch....I use Control-key and the Mouse Wheel to enlarge them to 150% Ctrl+wheel only affects the content pane. Ditto for font settings in Preferences (after all, font preferences are on the Content tab). My question is how to change font size for Fire...

Does Firefox get its UI font specs from the o/s, and if so, how to change?

I got no response to this question over in the Mozilla forum. Hopefully someone here can help... On my Linux machine, the Firefox user interface fonts (menus and bookmark labels) are larger than on my XP machine (both have same monitor model & resolution setting), so fewer bookmarks fit across the t...

Have a look at this article: VirtualBox 5.2.8 Released with Support for Linux 4.15
Thanks for that. After reviewing the original post in this thread, which was updated multiple times as recently as Feb 27, I suspected the advice given regarding VB was probably stale, even for kernel 4.13.

monitor standby freezes system

In Power Settings, I have the monitor set to blank @ 10 minutes and system suspend @ 15 minutes. If I attempt to restore the monitor before the system goes into suspend mode, it sometimes freezes the system where even the reset button doesn't work. So I have to do a forced shutdown and then restart,...

Re: How to update your kernel for Meltdown and Spectre

Also a few apps in the repos (notably the old version of Virtualbox) don't work with the newer kernels... Sorry for a quick OT question, but should I be concerned with upgrading to 4.15 kernel when it's offered in terms of VirtualBox compatibility, assuming I have latest VB release? I haven't set u...

Re: How to update your kernel for Meltdown and Spectre

About LM 18.2 vs Ubuntu 16.04.2, please refer to ... https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2017/09/linux-mint-18-3-release-date ... Not sure why it's different. Ok. I now see several other references on that. I imagine others who installed from the same 18.2 build that I did (and haven't upgraded) would get ...

Re: How to update your kernel for Meltdown and Spectre

Michael, thank you for your excellent summary! It helps a LOT. Did you do an inplace upgrade from LM 18.1 to 18.2.? No, I built this machine and installed LM 18.2. LM 18.2 LTS is based on Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS with default kernel 4.8... Hmm... When I run uname -a, I get the following response: Linux li...

Re: How to update your kernel for Meltdown and Spectre

Thanks. So if I'm understanding this correctly, Ubuntu supports the Linux kernels beyond their end of life outside of Ubuntu distros. However, the Ubuntu support schedule chart you linked is confusing to me. If I open the terminal and type uname -a, I get the following response: Linux linux-desktop ...
