Re: Windows - what do you use it for?

Well, I have to use it at work, and to keep my wife's W10 machines running. I run W10 VM's for work and personal stuff. Increasingly, when I attend training or conferences for work, we are sent home with literature that is in encrypted pdf form. The problem is that our network flags all outside encr...

Re: Tor Browser

Well, I got tired of waiting and uninstalled and reinstalled the Tor Browser Launcher. So far that has solved the problem.

Re: Tor Browser

No idea what is going on, and not a big concern right now, but I am experiencing the same issue since last night. Using apt in the terminal does not help.

For now I'm assuming it's a minor bug that will be fixed soon.

Re: Old Laptops

I had an old Toshiba that I gave to a friend, it was a 32 bit system. He didn't care as he brought his broken one with him on vacation to repair and he gave up on it as it was still doing the same thing. What's nice about the Latitude is its easy to work on, just slide off the bottom cover and ever...

Re: Old Laptops

However there's a limit to this thing about Linux being the saviour of old machines. After 12-15 years, say, the support isn't so great any more. Despite what many Linux users seem to think, the Linux Kernel Project isn't really interested in supporting old computers. And that's going to get worse,...

Re: Old Laptops

Why was it not set up with Linux? I've been trying for 5 years. Really hoped the advent of W10 would make her wise up but no such luck. I can provide pretty good Windows support since I've of course used it most of my working life, except for a 3 year dalliance with Unix when an employer got disgus...

Re: Old Laptops

And it's a shame that more of these machines aren't given to schools. Schools tend to use Chromebooks because they can be locked down to just the school's work. Yes, just had 42 to repair and got 2/3 of them going. But they can now do the same with Chrome OS Flex with any X86 machine. So Chromebook...

Re: Old Laptops

There are also tricks to install Windows 11 in not compatible computers: - officially, by becoming a Windows 11 insider (there are no requirements on the computer), - unofficially, by some settings in the register during installation. Will that last ? Regards, MN No idea, but most users can't be bo...

Re: Old Laptops

Do they sell online? No, just in person, but a lot of governments and colleges do something like this if you poke around. https://doas.ga.gov/surplus-property/information-for-public Just make sure it boots up before you buy it. And I avoid the machines that belonged to Emergency Management because ...

Re: Old Laptops

Our state government surplus store removes and destroys hard drives from old laptops, then sells them for $20 US. These are corporate grade machines, 3 to 5 years old, very sturdy with good specs. Quite a deal given the low cost of SSD's these days. For example I bought a Dell Latitude 6440 last yea...

Re: Non-Mint: MX Linux or Pop!_OS?

MX is taking over my computing life; only have 1 machine still running Mint but the forums here are better. I have found Pop to have scaling problems with older hardware but my case might be unique. I'm also becoming slightly disenchanted with Ubuntu in general. I still love you, Ubuntu, but there i...

Re: Your car spies on you, worse than you know. Much, much worse.

We need open source cars. And tractors. There are no bounds to Amazon snooping. My wife has Alexa devices, against my wishes, but what can I do? During early Covid when I was working extensively from home a Sonos device tried to infiltrate the government network I was logged in to (via VPN but the m...

I would say Keith Richards except that people have been saying that for 40 years and he's still around.
