Re: Can't launch gparted from menu

I changed the menu item to gksudo gparted and it finally worked. Apparently it wants to pop up the password request form or it chokes.

Win to USB

I now see programs to put Windows on a USB if you have it on a DVD and a product key. I do, but since I switched entirely to Linux I can't run them since they're all windows programs. Are there any linux programs that will do this?

Re: Letters keep disappearing from my directory listing

I've had the same problem so it's not isolated, and I'm using the standard installed fonts.

Tomboy fonts have gone insane

The fonts in Tomboy have gone wacky. Now and then I lose a letter or two in the directory or the terminal, which is a recurrent problem in Mint, and fix it by resetting fonts, but this is the worst yet :D I must admit, I'm getting tired of resetting fonts, and this keeps happening - although usually...

Letters keep disappearing from my directory listing

This keeps happening. I fix it by changing fonts, then it comes back. Now three letters are missing. I see a lot of complaints about this and it's been around for awhile. I sure wish they'd fix it - it's becoming annoying.

Re: Random missing characters everywhere

Same here. 18.3 missing "I". Changed to Sans and it came back. I didn't see any difference in fonts - what's the advantage of noto sans, anyway?

Oracle wants an ovf file but only sends vd files

This is driving me nuts. I want to install a virtual linux for experimentation so I don't whack my drive. I downloaded Virtualbox and the Linux mint virtual machine. But the virtualbox insists it only imports an ova or ovf file, but the Mint download from Oracle is vm format and won't work. I can't ...

When should you apply a kernel upgrade?

I keep seeing warnings that you should be careful applying 4 level upgrades like the Linux Kernel, but when Should you apply them? Wait a couple weeks in case they fail a lot, then apply them when they've been corrected? Will a bad kernel upgrade be withdrawn or just sit there and be mistakenly appl...

Re: Capital "L" has disappeared from directory

Oh, I've screwed up enough times to see if the plug is in the wall ;) Anyway, I fixed it by dld the Tweak Tool and changing fonts, or thought I did. But then my terminal fonts went nuts and all squished together. Thankfully the Tweak Tool has a reset since I couldn't remember the original fonts. But...

Backup Tool app list doesn't show copyQ

I ran the list files Backup Tool but for some reason it doesn't list copyQ, which I see in the GUI and it was installed with the file manager. Why isn't it listed? I added it to the BT file list manually, but used all small caps, which is a standard (sometimes). Will that work for app restore of cop...

Capital "L" has disappeared from directory

The capitol "L" has disappeared from my GUI directory listing. It's visible in text editor and on the Desktop, though. I fixed that problem in the Tomboy not program by just switching fonts but I don't see that option in Directory preferences. Also, when I see anything odd I think of a diskcheck. Do...

Random missing characters everywhere

I suddenly had this problem in the Tomboy program, and as noted, changed font - from Serif to Sans - and it went away. This was in Mint 18.3 so it's a persistent anomaly.

Re: keyring wanted every time I log on

Thanks. That thing sure is annoying. It also blocked the Yandex browser for the longest time. There should be an installation default that if you're the Only private user, you get NO keyring ;)

keyring wanted every time I log on

For some reason I'm suddenly getting a message I need the keyring password for some application when I start Mint. This just happened so I assume it's some application I'm not aware of. How can I find out what's causing this? I don't really want to mess with passwords, just kill whatever new app is ...

Cant mount android anymore

I used to be able to connect to my android tablet and transfer files, but now I can't. Did something change in Mint? Now it says it can't mount the device. Is there some way of mounting it manually?

How do I exit a virtual console?

I'm reading a linux book that says you can enter a virtual console with ctrl-alt-function key. I tried it. It filled the whole screen, and there seemed now way to get out of it other than rebooting. How do I switch consoles or get back to my GUI? The book, unfortunately, doesn't seem to mention this...

sound control icon stopped going over 100%

I've been using the sound control icon to go over 100% when necessary but now it doesn't. When I put it higher in settings it does but as soon as I go back to 100% it won't go back above. All I can think of was I installed a Bluetooth broadcasting USB (Which Wasn't automatic like the manufacturer cl...

Missing volume control. Right clicking on the applet in the applet panel doesn't do anything at all. Is there another fix?

synaptic errors: "W: Target Packages ... configured multiple times"

When I try to install something with Synaptic I keep getting these errors: W: Target Packages (universe/binary-amd64/Packages) is configured multiple times in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list:1 and /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list:2 W: Target Packages (univers...

Re: Can I extend monitors in Mint 18.3 or just mirror them?

Well it turns out system settings > monitor does everything I wanted so question closed ;) I only saw Mirror in the commands and figured that was the only gui option, but mint extends automatically and you can switch monitor positions by dragging the screens.
