Re: Can't play webm

I can't figure out how to tell what version from my computer. I only know to go to help>about vlc and it doesn't say anything useful on mine. Distrowatch says it comes with 2.2.6. Also, a few minutes after my last post my update thingy magically came up and had a bunch of audio stuff to update. LAME...

Re: Can't play webm

Also...
When I use SoundConverter 2.0.4 (from the Mint repo) to try to turn them into mp3 files I often get:

Python (v2.7) requires to install plugins to play media files of the following type: audio/x-unknown decoder

and the resulting mp3 file 'contains no data'.

Can't play webm

Hello Mintheads, I can't figure out how to make Videos or VLC play webm files with sound. It plays the video part and gives me an error message every time. When I try with VLC I get: No suitable decoder module: VLC does not support the audio or video format "VP90". Unfortunately there is no way for ...

Re: Noob Starts From Scratch

Hey everyone, I never did put the inxi stuff on here. Doh! I'll put it at the bottom of this post. Also, what's 'inxi' stand for? i can't find it on the web or the man page. lshw and hwinfo are easy to figure out. inxi -Fxz looks like i laughed out some alphabet soup while reading xkcd comics and li...

Re: Noob Starts From Scratch

I give up. Again. The MintXFCE 18.2 install got real weird and the window title bars would flash back n forth between two styles and the buttons would disappear and reappear and a bunch of other stuff. Screw it. I'm too dumb to fix that. I installed Windows7 (at least it's not 8 or 10) to my sda dri...

Re: Noob Starts From Scratch

...mint is the most user friendly linux option available I agree, relatively speaking. That being said, I've had to reinstall every couple of weeks or so for months and when I try to tough it out and leave it installed and figure out my problems by using the man pages (that are largely unreadable f...

Re: Noob Starts From Scratch

Thanks. Here's a link to me trying to figure some of this out on the XFCE forums if anyone wants to read it. https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?pid=45799#p45799 I'm gonna keep trying for a while longer, but I'm pretty close to just deleting this install and starting over or going to a different di...

Re: Noob Starts From Scratch

Thanks for the help, non-noobs. That was pretty informative. Here's some issues I've had since last time. Mostly error messages and window snapping problems. I always, always, always end up with window snapping problems after a week or two and I have no clue why or what to do about it. -------------...

Re: Noob Starts From Scratch

1.So the 'real' one is the virtual console. Awesome. 1a. I used shutdown -r +0 to reset. 4. If I type gksudo in the whisker menu search/run box and hit enter it brings up a small window. The window has a 1 line text entry box labeled 'Run', a dropdown menu labeled 'As user', a 'Cancel' button, an 'O...

Re: Noob Starts From Scratch

Hello and thank you, everybody. Here's some more questions related to the last stuff: 1. When, if ever, would I want to use the 'real terminal' instead of something like XFCE Terminal? 1a. How does an overly curious noob exit back out of the 'real terminal' when they get stuck in it the first time? ...

Re: Noob Starts From Scratch

Thanks for the replies, people. I think I understand updates and how programs work a little better now and it's cool that a fellow noob thought I said something interesting. Pjotr's page looks pretty helpful. I havent done much of it yet, but I probably will soon (caaaarefully). --------------------...

Noob Starts From Scratch

This thread is me, a Linux noob, installing Linux Mint 18.2 XFCE and doing things really slowly and carefully and asking for help every time I have to be root or do something that looks like it might be important so I don't get things screwed up like I have every other time I've tried to Linux. Hope...

Re: Do my programs not get along or am I too dumb to install them or something else?

Grumble Grumble... Hopefully my idiot adventures in trying to make the difficult switch to linux from regular computers will be useful or funny to someone that reads this thread some day even though I'm ready to set my computer and myself on fire and just quit.... Anyway, enough grumbling. You guys ...

Re: Do my programs not get along or am I too dumb to install them or something else?

Thanks for tellin me my iso was cool, but (as probably expected) I have a thousand more stupid questions about that.... ...of which I will only ask 1. gpg: WARNING: This key is not certified with a trusted signature! What's that about? That looks to a noob like I'm being warned that I shouldn't trus...

Re: Do my programs not get along or am I too dumb to install them or something else?

Ok, I gave up on fixing my computer and I'm gonna just install again so... 1. I downloaded 18.2 XFCE 2. I did what it said at https://linuxmint.com/verify.php to do the checksum thing. 3. The checksum thingy said this: me@mint ~/ISO $ sha256sum -b *.iso 2dcf4ccd76657d42c7e4f14e9e237da9ab0a07028b5ba6...

Re: Does anyone code?

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll check all those out over the next little bit. Starting a project sounds like a good idea, but I don't understand enough to even begin a simple one. (I've never programmed anything that actually ran right.) Will do as soon as I think I can make the attempt. As of ...

Re: Do my programs not get along or am I too dumb to install them or something else?

Would it be ok if I just made a thread detailing everything significant that I do to my computer after a fresh install to see where I'm screwing up? I don't know what the etiquette is about that on here.

Also, Daniel Berrigan and the smoking head of Bob Dobbs rule. There's some well cultured people here at the Mint boards. :)

Re: Do my programs not get along or am I too dumb to install them or something else?

Thanks for trying to help, but I'm just getting more confused. Yall are being really cool, it's not yall's fault. I just don't know very much about anything and I asked too many questions at once because I don't understand anything well enough to have any idea what went wrong or why so I could 'stic...
