I am amazed
I have here a 2010 11" MacBook Air, and I am absolutely amazed that Mint 20 Cinnamon is up and running fine, on a 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo with only 2GB RAM :D I suppose it all relates to your expectations on performance, but honestly I am very happy with this system, and just wanted to thank all the ...

Re: Linus Torvalds doubts Linux will get ported to Apple M1 hardware
I'm sorry, maybe I was using hate more as a figure of speech ;) As for late adoption, and blaming customers for hardware faults, you are right of course. For example, I had a Samsung Galaxy Gear smart watch before Apple 'invented' theirs, yet a lot of people think they were first because of the mark...

Re: Linus Torvalds doubts Linux will get ported to Apple M1 hardware
I'm surprised at the amount of hate around here towards Apple users, and should reveal that I have a lot of their machines, older ones . My plan is to dual boot them all to Mint 19 or 20 or later as appropriate, and not to buy an M1, and as the Mac OS versions get left behind I will switch over to o...

Re: (SOLVED) Changing partitions on a dual boot MacBook
I did a dry run on an old laptop about to be formatted and sold, so no risk if it went wrong. Following the successful partition edit on that laptop I booted to the Mint Live CD on my MacBook and deleted the FAT32 partition, then resized the EXT4 one. The UUIDs had not changed so I was able to reboo...

(SOLVED) Changing partitions on a dual boot MacBook
Hello, I recently installed Sarah XFCE on my 2008 MacBook, dual booted with OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Everything works fine, especially with rEFInd as the boot manager; however the space I gave Mint has become too small and I would like to delete the FAT32 partition lebelled SPARE and recover more s...

Back again!
Hello once again, I last used Mint Cinnamon a few years ago, (and previous to that Cassandra) but this time I have Sarah XFCE installed on an old Dell Mini 10v with 2GB RAM and 128GB SSD. Dual booting with Windows 7 but mostly sticking with Mint. To be honest I am mainly a Mac user but the netbook w...

2nd time newbie
Hello,
Just installed Cinnamon to a USB stick, running on a Dell Mini 10v hackintosh.
This is my second go of Mint - the last one I regularly used was Cassandra.
Impressed - I like it !!
Thanks for all the good work,
Cheers
Hugh

Re: Linux Mint on a Mac?
Booted from CD, installed, and wouldn't boot the installation. . . hmmm. . . . Now, I've been using Linux for a couple of years, but just got an iMac - other way round to you. From what I can glean with my scant knowledge I think you need to enable Bootcamp in your Mac to dual boot with oth...

Re: Has anybody tried . . .
PCLOS uses 500 for the UID I think, does that mean that it would write a whole raft of duplicated files to the shared /home partition? I think I would rather play it safe, install PCLOS on the one partition (root and home combined) and mount my Mint /home (as, say /mnt/minthome) from there so I can ...

Has anybody tried . . .
Has anybody tried to share /home between Mint KDE and PCLinuxOS. I doubt it would work, but I wondered if it was remotely likely to be successful without borking 2 installs. I have one spare 9gb partition on my laptop and want to install PCLOS on it, but don't want to split it up into / and /home an...

Re: Belkin Wifi
Not Realtek 8180 chipset then - my Realtek card worked out of the box with PCLOS, with ndiswrapper in Mint. A little googling brings up the following:- http://questier.com/howto.html#Belkin - old howto but it appears you have an Atmel chipset and here http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Belkin_F5D60...

Re: Belkin Wifi
Yep, same here, no wifi card when I do lspci, and I have a Linksys WPC11 running. However, when I try lspcmcia, I get huggy@laptop:~$ lspcmcia Socket 0 Bridge: [yenta_cardbus] (bus ID: 0000:00:0b.0) Socket 0 Device 0: [orinoco_cs] (bus ID: 0.0) Socket 1 Bridge: [yenta_cardbus] (bus ID: 0000:00:0b.1)...

No problem, have a Realtek card as well
Will send you the files as before, I know the 8180 works in Mint because I've used it myself.
Cheers,
Hugh

Re: Belkin Wifi
Hi, I've had that card, and I'm not sure that even with ndiswrapper it will work willingly (can't quite remember). Anyway, I still have the drivers, and have extracted the relevant .inf file for you. If you pm me with an email address I can send it to you to try out. Hope this helps, Cheers :) :) Hugh

In my experience, older laptops (turn of the century) have trouble with ACPI power management, so you have to turn it off. When the boot menu comes up, hit F6 for other options, and add 'ACPI=off' to the line of commands that appears at the bottom, then hit enter to carry on booting. If that doesn't...

When I put Linux on my wife's laptop I took her Windows hard drive out and put in another the same capacity to install to. And like scorp123 I used the same wallpaper and sounds she was used to. That way if she didn't like it she could go back to Windows with no problem. ...... I formatted the Windo...
