Re: sudo vs. gksudo

If I may interject: How does the File Manager open up as root in the following example? sudo or gksudo Shutter_002.jpg Hi JerryF. I can say that in the case of Xfce, it uses gksu. Here's the relevant section of ~/.config/Thunar/uca.xml: <action> <icon>stock_open</icon> <name>Open as Root</name> <un...

Re: 1 HDD/OS, switch between 2 PCs - Inconsistent behaviour

One user reported recently that upgrading his kernel to 4.13.0-45 resolved the CPU load issues he was facing, although I think he had been using 4.10.

On my previous computer (XP vintage) with similar RAM to yours, Google Maps often locked me up after several minutes.

Re: No sound on Linux Mint 18.3

I think it's time to try a reinstall of sound modules.

Code: Select all

apt install --reinstall linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils libasound2
Followed by:

Code: Select all

sudo alsa force-reload
Good luck.

Re: No stereo output through headphones

You don't have to use the terminal to install pavucontrol, you can do it from Software Manager or Synaptic. You also don't have to start it from the terminal. It will appear in your menu as PulseAudio Volume Control. (Some prefer the terminal, some prefer the GUI. Different strokes for different fo...

Re: No stereo output through headphones

Hi SS, and welcome to the forum. I don't use Cinnamon so don't have that Test button. I'd suggest you install pavucontrol (in the terminal type apt install pavucontrol ) then run it (in the terminal again just type pavucontrol ) then check the Configuration tab, as well as the Output Devices tab and...

Re: mic not recording

If you don't already have it, install pavucontrol with apt install pavucontrol then run it by typing pavucontrol then check the Input Devices tab for your mic settings.

Hope that helps.

Re: No sound on Linux Mint 18.3

Well this might be telling:
E: [pulseaudio] core-util.c: Home directory not accessible: Permission denied
You seem to have lost ownership of part of your home directory. You can verify with find $HOME ! -user $USER and repair with sudo chown -R $USER:$USER /home/$USER

Re: No sound on Linux Mint 18.3

rob@rob-27-p014 ~ $ pulseaudio -k && alsa force-reload
You missed the sudo before alsa.

EDIT: Before trying that, see next post first.

Re: No sound on Linux Mint 18.3

Damn. I typed eveything below then realized I've never seen your specs. Before trying the below, please post the results of inxi -Fxz . Here's something that may help (but I'm not really counting on it.) You said in your first post: As you'll see, I've upgraded the kernel to the latest stable releas...

Re: No sound on Linux Mint 18.3

Let's give this a shot and see if it works as it's easy to reverse if it doesn't help.

In the terminal, type gksudo xed /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf then scroll to the bottom of the file and add this line: options snd-hda-intel model=auto

Save the file, then reboot and test sound.

Re: No sound on Linux Mint 18.3

Also, when you have time, paste back the results of inxi -A as well as pacmd list-sinks When pasting large blocks of text, use the code button (looks like </>) to help retain formatting. For me, when I hit that button I can rightclick anywhere in the text area to paste and it automatically pastes it...

Do any of those pulseaudio errors make a difference?
I honestly don't know. Hopefully restoring alsamixer will get us somewhere.

Re: No sound on Linux Mint 18.3

Well, it's improvement at least. While Rythmbox is playing is there visual feedback in pavucontrol's Playback tab?

Also, in alsamixer, what options exist when you press F6?

Re: No sound on Linux Mint 18.3

Hi robluck82, and welcome to the forum. If you look at this topic you might notice same audio card and busID as you're running. ori0n's mysteriously started working the next day. Can we hope the same for you? A couple of things that might improve the help here: 1. Is HDMI how you want sound? Or from...

Re: USB soundcard only works after unplugging and plugging in again

Okay. Sorry about that. I guess you should reverse the change to /etc/modules and we'll have to wait for someone else to help. Like I said I'm guessing ACPI needs to be off, but that's not something I have any experience with and I don't want you to end up unable to boot at all.

Re: USB soundcard only works after unplugging and plugging in again

Okay. For some reason, snd_usb_audio is not loading at boot, and I assume does when you plug in the device. Verify this with lsmod | grep snd when sound is working. I think the easiest solution in that case is to open /etc/modules for editing with gksudo xed /etc/modules and add a new line at the bo...

Re: USB soundcard only works after unplugging and plugging in again

When sound is NOT working, in the terminal type lsmod | grep snd and paste back the result.
