Re: Why do newcomers stay with Mint?

I came to Mint from Debian some years ago. I stuck around after I found that fresh Mint already had all the polish I'd spent months adding to Debian, and more; and it worked just as well as Debian. It's easy to use and does everything I need. My favourite OS ever was LMDE 2 Mate. I'm regular Mint no...

Re: Mouse freezes using 18.3

Hi jackroq, I had a similar problem. I fixed it by unplugging my mouse and using the touchpad only.

It's been said already but to repeat, "noob" - man, do I dislike that term. So derogatory. So L33T 90s!

Re: Why did you decide to install Linux Mint??

Gimp is plenty good enough to replace photoshop. ... This is very true. Of course my photo editing skills is very basic, but GIMP lets me do everything I did with Photoshop: - Curves / exposure adjustment - Retouching (healing, cloning, etc.) - Vignette - Sharpening - White balance The only thing I...

Re: Random freezes: dual DE system, Mint xfce 19.1

An update. Things got really bad yesterday, in xfce as well as Mate; even when I tried a live disc. Couldn't open apps or close open ones; constant freezes; could only do hard shutdowns. Since it seemed to be related to mouse clicks, I tried unplugging the wireless mouse and using the touchpad alone...

Re: The pros of XFCE DE?

I don't know. I installed 19 xfce as a change from Mate. They strike me as similar, but I prefer Mate. It seems just that bit more polished, and having used it for years, and Gnome 2 before it, I guess I'm more familiar with it.

[SOLVED: faulty mouse] Random freezes: dual DE system, Mint xfce 19.1

Hi! My system is Mint xfce 19.1 on a HP 8570p laptop, 8 GB ram. I've been experiencing many random freezes requiring hard restarts and I'm starting to wonder if it relates to my installing Mate alongside xfce. I can't remember when they started except it's been for a few months and I've kept no log ...

I've followed him for years. He hates Debian and writes dystopian fiction, so he's not your usual easily pleased optimist.

At heart, I'm a Debiant

Great thread, very interesting to see others' perspectives. I haven't used Windows seriously in a very long time. In my limited experience XP and 7 seemed to be good releases. I think 10 might be safest used offline! I've never liked Windows updates, and the whole Windows system lacks elegance and a...

[Solved] Synaptic not opening

Mint Xfce 19.1 here. When I went to install a package before, Synaptic appeared for the briefest of moments and disappeared. I tried a restart with no luck. When I tried starting it from the terminal, the same thing occurred and I got this message: (synaptic:1728): Gtk-CRITICAL **: 17:52:59.108: gtk...

Re: LMDE Users

User base? Dunno. Most probably tiny compared to regular Mint - and steadily shrinking if the lessening frequency of posts in this section is an indication. If what you mean is to exchange Ubuntu repos in the main edition for Debian ones and follow it with a dist-upgrade, I'd expect a disaster. You ...

Re: Is Linux Mint ugly?

I was intrigued and tested this just now. On my system, with a mighty 8 gigarams at my disposal, a black background made no significant difference. I'll stick with my "Grass in the morning" background"! Of course it's insignificant, but it's still resources being used and I really never star...

Re: Is Linux Mint ugly?

In terms of available themes and backgrounds, I've always found Mint to be a particularly beautiful distro. Tasteful, elegant, and relaxed. I like the login screen especially. Hats off to the photographers! :) That one is actually true, the available backgrounds are beautiful, worth a look even if ...

Re: Is Linux Mint ugly?

I've used LMDE Mate for many years and while I don't care for the default appearance after installation, I like that's readily configurable to one's taste. I imagine this is so in regular Mint. In terms of available themes and backgrounds, I've always found Mint to be a particularly beautiful distro...

Re: Linux Mint Debian Edition 3

As a long-time Mate user I'm also lamenting the loss of it as an official option. While I understand and accept the reasons for offering Cinnamon only, one of the appeals of LMDE to me is its reduced resource use compared to regular Mint; thus, I find Mate is a good companion for it. Cinnamon is jus...

Re: Slow image loading in gthumb and Pix

An update: A 1.5 hr RAM test revealed no faults and the graphics card seems to be behaving in other applications. I've installed gthumbpic and Xviewer. The image cache loads practically instantaneously in each. Xviewer has become my preferred viewer for images I don't need to edit. I'm accepting the...
