Re: Can't get GRUB to pop up at startup

Dell is F2 for BIOS setup, F12 for boot menu. Glad you dropped in. You're the one with dual boot experience, where I'm working by analogy to install-to-USB. Can you figure out how rkildu is able to boot? Obviously he (or she) has a GPT partition. In my understanding, that means to boot in legacy mo...

Re: Can't get GRUB to pop up at startup

As all41 says, you're doing a great job. Yes, that's the screenshot I wanted. Next step is to go into UEFI and switch back to regular mode, not legacy. If you're still booted in Mint, run systemctl reboot --firmware-setup in Terminal. If you already shut down, there's some key (likely F2 or Esc) for...

Re: How to create DATA partition symlinks for standard user?

I use a data partition, albeit on a single user system. Try this. Log in as yourself and run sudo ln -s /mnt/DATA/Documents /home/<wife>. Log out, then back in on her account to see whether the link works. If so, switch back to your account and repeat for the other folders.

Re: Do I need antivirus if I use Wine?

The funny thing about this issue is that no one knows how to guarantee Wine can't be used as a vector for virus/malware attack because the attacks are so rare there's nothing to patch. The disclosure in the Wine FAQ , for example, is based on a single incident twelve years ago. By contrast, Ubuntu h...

Re: Missing Context Menu Item?

Another way to manage which app opens a file type is Preferred Applicaitons. Can be found in Menu and on Control Panel.

No idea about the volume problem.

The pre-selected "target device" was also correct. That was confirmation enough that snapshot correctly recognized the copied snapshot.
Fair enough. Whether it would remember where it was supposed to go is indeed what I was wondering also.

Re: Cannot remove a package.

The repo version of VirtualBox seems to be on version 5.2.23, so looks like you're way out of sync. Can you boot VBox? What version do you have?

Was going to suggest something similar if the touchpad can't be gotten to work. I'm particularly fond of the Logitech trackball, finding it easier to use than a mouse and less stressful on the fingers.

Don't understand where I'm losing you. Boot the live session. You will have a desktop, Menu, panel and system tray. Set up an internet connection. Open Firefox. Go the Mint Forum and open this thread. Copy in the command I gave earlier, the one you ran in the installed Mint system. I want to see wha...

I assumed the latter problem was simply a matter of operator error, since I don't really know what I'm doing here. I gather from your post, though, that ...

Re: Can't get GRUB to pop up at startup

Question then becomes, why is the ISO booting in legacy mode? Please boot the ISO again, the same one you used to install. Run the sys/firmware command and confirm boot mode in your next post. Also, as much as I dislike to request screenshots, I think we need one here. In the live session, open GPar...

Re: How to check the integrity of the downloaded ISO image of Linux mint 18.3 sylvia

Understand that when anyone writes a "how to", they have to decide how many permutations to cover. There's a trade-off between comprehensiveness and comprehensibility. As XP is way past End of Life, it's not going to be covered by guides applicable to current Linux tools. If your heart is dead set o...

Re: ISO downloads from 2 mirrors fail verification

I still don't really understand why the previous "Save as.. (exact wording varies depending on your browser)" was ever a problem when there is only one "Save"-type option in your right-click menu but be that as it may. Not going to add the exact wording of every browser out there though. I've never...

Re: How to install programs on virtualbox

Second question, how do I get the VB screen to fill my laptop screen space, it is smaller and I need all the screen space for the flight sim to be workable. A common cause of this problem is incompatibility between the guest system and the new VirtualBox VMSVGA graphics controller (which is assigne...

At the github page Michael links, Alex Larsson (lead Flatpak developer) says, "this is just the default, its [sic] possible for distros/sysadmins to change this behaviour in the policykit setup." Is this something an ordinary user can do or does it require super guru powers?

Re: Can't get GRUB to pop up at startup

Looks to me like you have Windows installed in UEFI but Mint in legacy boot. Frankly, I'm surprised you can boot Windows at all. Let's confirm. For Windows, press Win+R to open Run. Type msinfo32 into the "Open" field; click OK. A System Information report will appear. BIOS mode is line fourteen. Fo...

Not sure, but maybe you need to have UEFI boot active, since rEFInd is for UEFI-based computers.
I'm sure. Yes, rEFInd only works in UEFI.
