Re: 19.1 along side Windows 7 gone wrong

I respectfully disagree. Grub in this case belongs on sda . Reinstalling 19.1, selecting the correct destination for the bootloader should do that. If it doesn't, the question is how to disable Grub on sdc , not designing the whole boot system around it. BTW, if you're keen to figure out grub reinst...

Pretty sure inxi can't be run from a grub> prompt. At least, I can't figure out a way to do it.

Re: 19.1 along side Windows 7 gone wrong

Well, darn. Unfortunately, I'm only now learning this grub reinstall and boot repair stuff, so I don't know what step is missing. Probably simplest to do what you wanted and reinstall the whole system. At least now you can say you gave grub reinstall a shot.

Re: 19.1 along side Windows 7 gone wrong

Further to arvy's suggestions, Ubuntu Help says: If Ubuntu is operating normally, boot into the working installation and run the following command from a terminal. X is the drive (letter) on which you want GRUB to write the boot information. Normally users should not include a partition number, whic...

Re: 19.1 along side Windows 7 gone wrong

Then, by all means, go for it. Also, thinking it over, occurs to me I might be over-generalizing about orphaned systems, which is to say your 18.3 Grub might be fine pending removal. Notably, in the multi-boot scenario I mentioned, there were no Grub files on the secondary systems. Here, there will ...

Re: [SOLVED] sudo update-grub is not working correctly for me

Well, yes, you need os-prober, but that shouldn't have been touched by purging grub-common (not a dependency). Don't know why you think you need lupin-support. Not installed on my system, though available in Synaptic.

Anyhoo, it's useful to know exactly what you did, so thanks for clarifying.

Re: 19.1 along side Windows 7 gone wrong

Looks like I should have installed grub in /sdc but installed in /sdc5. Can I correct this from 19.1? Well, no, you shouldn't have installed Grub in sdc unless you wanted 19.1 to be primary Grub. Frankly, it seems rickNS and arvy overlooked that this is a multi-boot scenario. Secondary Grubs are co...

Re: Hard Disk not found

I'm more optimistic than catweazel . Might be true the machine is too old, but there's not enough evidence here yet to conclude that. Let's start with system information. Boot the live session, open Terminal and run inxi -Fxz . Post the output here using code tags, just like you did the fdisk output...

Re: 19.1 along side Windows 7 gone wrong

I have 18.3 on another drive if that makes any difference. Does this still boot correctly? If so, it's probably the primary Grub and you should be able to solve this problem by running sudo update-grub there. In which event, installing the bootloader to the root partition of the new installation wa...

Congratulations! And now we know how to recover from Grub Customizer. By the way, for future reference, you used purge-and-reinstall, right?

I don't use kvm, so don't have a frame of reference. Whether you had run update-grub just seemed worth checking. Good luck.

Re: Install on USB

Thanks for following up. Folks often don't. Plainly, if Ubuntu solves your problem, then that's a good solution. Would be surprised if there's any app which works in Mint that can't be installed in Ubuntu also, but I don't use an email client so not familiar with the names mentioned. Anyhoo, enjoy y...

Re: How to Encrypt Individual Files and Folders via GUI

Pretty funny. You've now invested about ten times as much effort as it would have taken to learn how to encrypt your home folder on a separate partition. And, no, they're not going to redesign Linux per your specifications. It's an "as is, no warranties" product. ETA: For context, the OP's prior thr...

That's a new one. Usually it's 3D acceleration in Cinnamon which goes missing periodically due to VBox/GA updates.

Nice to see they decided to pick on someone else for a change.

Re: sudo update-grub is not working correctly for me

Go back and read the Ubuntu Help article I linked above. Bear in mind you got into this mess by using Grub Customizer. I'm not sure, as I've not had this scenario, but my hunch is that you need to clear out the config files, for which my further hunch is that purge and reinstall is the right answer....

Yes, I hit the F12 key on the laptop when it was powering on to get the boot menu. What it shows me is a menu titled 'UEFI boot' with the following options (in order): Windows Boot Manager ubuntu UEFI: USB DISK 3.0 PMAP UEFI: USB DISK 3.0 PMAP, Partition 2 If I select 'ubuntu' the screen flickers a...

Re: external Hard drive not "seen", no access to contents

Well, no, upgrading to 19.1 did not do anything to your external hard drive, though YOU may have done something to the drive during the course of installing the new system (fresh install, right? - not an upgrade in place). Impossible for us to know what you did, though, as we weren't there. Let's st...

Re: wine on lm 19.1 help needed

Hey Mary, welcome to the Linux Mint Forums. Wine installs fine in 19.1, but some things have changed. Basically, you have a choice. You can install from repo (Software Manager, Synaptic or Terminal), which will get you Wine 3.0. Or you can install directly from WineHQ, which will get you Wine 4.0. B...
