Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

I am currently testing Mageia 7 Beta 1 on my backup machine. In spite of being a beta and hundreds of updates each day it is surprisingly stable. It is worth a look.

Re: Okular cannot speak

I figured it out. It turns out that I had to install Jovie instead of espeak to make this work on Linux Mint. I used espeak because that is what worked on my Mageia 7 setup, so I assumed that it was the tool that would be used on Mint. So, it works now, and Jovie has a GUI configuration dialog that ...

Re: Okular cannot speak

Well, OK then. Now I feel dumb. I figured out where Kmouth is. I had the package manager set to View=>Installed Packages only. View=>Available Packages was turned off, so it was not showing kmouth in the list. Duh. I installed kmouth, but Okular still has the "Speak" menu items grayed out. The searc...

[SOLVED]Okular cannot speak

I am running Mint 18.1 and trying to get Okular to read the documents it is displaying. The "speak" menu items in Tools are grayed out. I have espeak and all its libraries etc. installed. I can run espeak on the command line and enter text into it and it works fine. I have read that Okular needs kmo...

Re: Recommend a sub $80 all in one mostly for scanning?

On my system, the router negotiated a fixed IP address for the printer. I think I initiated that sequence from the printer. Since the printer installation process uses the IP address of the printer to talk to it, you don't want the IP getting moved around by the DHCP. After installing the printer, i...

Re: Recommend a sub $80 all in one mostly for scanning?

I would avoid inkjet printers that do not incorporate the print head in the cartridge, especially if the print function will see light use. I had an old Epson printer once that had separate color cartridges and separate print heads. I bought it because the ink refills were cheaper, and I could buy j...

Re: Recommend a sub $80 all in one mostly for scanning?

The HP printers work very well with Linux, and they are not very expensive. The Linux driver set, HPLIP, is supported by HP and works with many of their printers. I have an HP Deskjet 3510 with print/scan/copy, and it hooks up using WiFi, so I can put it anywhere. I think it cost about $100, but tha...

Re: Gimp 2.10

FYI I have a bash script that I found somewhere that allows me to use the file context menu to open files using Irfan. It takes a lot of the PITA out of using Irfan. I have also set Irfan as my default file association so a double click will open an image in Irfan. I put the script in my ~/bin folde...

Re: Krunner Crashes

I just tried krunner again to see if any updates have been posted that might have fixed it. The problem still persists on my system. From the desktop, where I have disabled all the searches except for application, it works. From the Start menu, where I have not figured out how to disable the searche...

Re: Linux Mint users who have Verizon as ISP and using Evolution or Thunderbird as email clients

My wife went with the AOL offering as well (I let mine die.) Every once in a while, she'll get a dump of a few dozen emails that she already got in the last couple days. She's never complained about not getting anything that I can remember. Oh. She's using Windows. Still working on that! Last week,...

Re: Linux Mint users who have Verizon as ISP and using Evolution or Thunderbird as email clients

I have Verizon as my ISP and I signed up for AOL when Verizon dumped the email. Mine works most of the time with Thunderbird, but occasionally it fails to log in. I ignore the error, and later on the login begins to work again. No changes to the Thunderbird settings. It simply fails for a while and ...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

I just installed Nemo on my Mint KDE installation, and then I mounted one of my WD Passport drives. Digging down to /media/<user>/<drive>/ Nemo did manage to open the drive normally. This is the same drive that failed on the Mint Cinnamon installation. So I do not know what happened there. Also, to ...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

I've never had a problem with Nemo not finding my NTFS drives. That could be read either way  I know what you mean though. Never had a problem accessing them with Nemo myself, either. Well that is a puzzle then. I just plugged in the drive, and when the dialog popped up I selected "Open wi...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

During my search for a new distro I installed Mint Cinnamon and immediately ran into a showstopper issue. The issue was that I could not access my backup drives, which are standard USB WD Passport drives. When I attempted to open a drive with the default file browser, I got an error saying that the ...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

Speaking of old style tools, I just discovered "mc", another Midnight Commander clone.... all text based. It looks like a Win98 era tool.

This could be the throwback of all throwbacks.

Re: [SOLVED]How Can I Display the Grub Menu?

That is an interesting toggle. Indecision is a terrible thing.... or not... or maybe yes..... not sure......

I now have more than a screen full of kernels in the grub menu. I cannot remember how to remove some of them from the list. I doubt that I need all of them in there.

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

Well, Thanks to Banjo, I am now testing the MAGEIA live session that I could not get to boot all the way when I tested it before.
Glad I could help. I actually just passed on the suggestion from benmc on the Mageia forum. Folks helping folks.

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

I did not work for the phone company. I don't remember the details of the PDP model numbers. I used the PDP-11's in the lab in grad school. One lab had a PDP-8. Yikes. I got my Masters degree programming Algol on a Univac 1108.... using Hollerith cards. The Univac 1108 had one's complement arithmeti...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

Nix sounds expensive with regard to disk space. They never delete any version of anything. The old PDP-11 (yeah..... I'm that old) had a file system that did the same thing with files; when you saved an edit, the system simply flagged the old file as a numbered backup and made a new file. After abou...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

tovian, Wow. I have never had an issue like that with Mageia. The live DVD has always booted for me first time. Hanging up is not normal behavior. Odd. What kind of hardware are you installing on? I have stuck with Mageia mostly from familiarity with it. My first Linux distro was Mandrake 9, and the...
