Re: Krunner Crashes

I just tried krunner again to see if any updates have been posted that might have fixed it. The problem still persists on my system. From the desktop, where I have disabled all the searches except for application, it works. From the Start menu, where I have not figured out how to disable the searche...

Re: Linux Mint users who have Verizon as ISP and using Evolution or Thunderbird as email clients

My wife went with the AOL offering as well (I let mine die.) Every once in a while, she'll get a dump of a few dozen emails that she already got in the last couple days. She's never complained about not getting anything that I can remember. Oh. She's using Windows. Still working on that! Last week,...

Re: Linux Mint users who have Verizon as ISP and using Evolution or Thunderbird as email clients

I have Verizon as my ISP and I signed up for AOL when Verizon dumped the email. Mine works most of the time with Thunderbird, but occasionally it fails to log in. I ignore the error, and later on the login begins to work again. No changes to the Thunderbird settings. It simply fails for a while and ...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

I just installed Nemo on my Mint KDE installation, and then I mounted one of my WD Passport drives. Digging down to /media/<user>/<drive>/ Nemo did manage to open the drive normally. This is the same drive that failed on the Mint Cinnamon installation. So I do not know what happened there. Also, to ...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

I've never had a problem with Nemo not finding my NTFS drives. That could be read either way  I know what you mean though. Never had a problem accessing them with Nemo myself, either. Well that is a puzzle then. I just plugged in the drive, and when the dialog popped up I selected "Open wi...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

During my search for a new distro I installed Mint Cinnamon and immediately ran into a showstopper issue. The issue was that I could not access my backup drives, which are standard USB WD Passport drives. When I attempted to open a drive with the default file browser, I got an error saying that the ...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

Speaking of old style tools, I just discovered "mc", another Midnight Commander clone.... all text based. It looks like a Win98 era tool.

This could be the throwback of all throwbacks.

Re: [SOLVED]How Can I Display the Grub Menu?

That is an interesting toggle. Indecision is a terrible thing.... or not... or maybe yes..... not sure......

I now have more than a screen full of kernels in the grub menu. I cannot remember how to remove some of them from the list. I doubt that I need all of them in there.

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

Well, Thanks to Banjo, I am now testing the MAGEIA live session that I could not get to boot all the way when I tested it before.
Glad I could help. I actually just passed on the suggestion from benmc on the Mageia forum. Folks helping folks.

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

I did not work for the phone company. I don't remember the details of the PDP model numbers. I used the PDP-11's in the lab in grad school. One lab had a PDP-8. Yikes. I got my Masters degree programming Algol on a Univac 1108.... using Hollerith cards. The Univac 1108 had one's complement arithmeti...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

Nix sounds expensive with regard to disk space. They never delete any version of anything. The old PDP-11 (yeah..... I'm that old) had a file system that did the same thing with files; when you saved an edit, the system simply flagged the old file as a numbered backup and made a new file. After abou...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

tovian, Wow. I have never had an issue like that with Mageia. The live DVD has always booted for me first time. Hanging up is not normal behavior. Odd. What kind of hardware are you installing on? I have stuck with Mageia mostly from familiarity with it. My first Linux distro was Mandrake 9, and the...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

Take a look at Mageia too. That distro is KDE centered, and is fairly stable. It is based on Red Hat, so there is some learning curve there.

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

I am running Mageia 6 on my other computer to see if it will satisfy my needs for control and stability. I know that folks on this forum are not enamored of Mageia, but it seems to be fairly stable, and it is definitely KDE Plasma based. I have had to overcome some minor glitches to get all my tools...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

Have you tried the Apple products? They are fully integrated, and a lot of people love them. They are a bit expensive, but they work out of the box.

Good stuff. I found a searchable database for the Mageia packages.

Re: Where to get complete repository listing before installing?

Is there a way to look at a distro's complete available package list without installing the distro? Boot the live system of the distro of your interest and open (in case of Mint) the software manager or synaptic. Here he have all on one place. I actually tried this on PCLinuxOS. The number of packa...

Yes there is: 1. Upstream Ubuntu (by default also available for Mint): http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/ Here's Frescobaldi (in Universe): http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/f/frescobaldi/ 2. Mint-only: http://packages.linuxmint.com/ This is good information, but it pertains only t...

Where to get complete repository listing before installing?

I am looking at a bunch of distros to compare them for my next installation. I would like to look at the complete list of supported packages in the repository for a distro to make sure that some of the more obscure packages are there before I invest the time to install it. For example, I use frescob...

Re: Really Slow Transfer/Copying Speeds Recently - How to Fix?

I had that happen to me once and it turned out to be a failing disk drive. As they fail, they keep swapping things out of bad sectors into good sectors, and that slows them down. This is just a guess, but you might run smartctl against the disk and see if you can see any failures noted. Here is an e...
