Re: Wacom Intuos Tablet Not Seen by Mint 18.1

I may have answered my own question. According to the Linux Wacom Project Wiki page https://github.com/linuxwacom/input-wacom/wiki/Device-IDs my device requires kernel 4.10. Device ID Model Number Model Name Notes Linux input-wacom libwacom 056a:0378 CTL-6100WL Intuos BT M 3rd-generation (USB interf...

Wacom Intuos Tablet Not Seen by Mint 18.1

I just got my first drawing tablet and would like to use it on my mint 18.1 system. The tablet is a Wacom Intuos, Pen & Bluetooth ® Medium CTL6100WLK When I plug it into the system, the OS does not see it. The USB connection looks fine. $ lsusb Bus 002 Device 002: ID 8087:8001 Intel Corp. Bus 002 De...

Re: Not so much a question as a suggestion ot request

In the olden days we used the 'yes' command for this sort of thing. Copy the files using the command line and pipe 'yes' into the command. When piped into a bash command it always answers "yes" (or whatever you tell it to answer) to any query from the command. Check out how to use it here https://ww...

Re: [SOLVED]Mint 18.1 Will not boot with kernel 4.4.0-143

The 340 driver shows up in my list of available drivers in the Software Manager. I am running Mint 18.1. What list are you looking at where the driver does not appear? I just went to the nvidia web site to search for the driver for the GTX 960, and it recommends the 390 driver, which does not appear...

Re: [SOLVED]Mint 18.1 Will not boot with kernel 4.4.0-143

I have found that the nouveau driver is very glitchy on my systems. I always start out giving up on getting the Nvidia drivers to work and go with the open source driver, and then after dealing with the glitchy graphics for a while I cave in and set up the Nvidia drivers. Then.... I give up on Nvidi...

Re: Mint 18.1 Will not boot with kernel 4.4.0-143

OK. Now I feel really dumb. I have been seeing level 4 and level 5 updates all along, so I assumed that all levels were set to visible. But level 4 and 5 levels were not checked visible. I guess the ones I was seeing were visible because both Show Security Updates and Show Kernel Updates were checke...

Re: Mint 18.1 Will not boot with kernel 4.4.0-143

Nope. There is nothing in the blacklist section. Very strange. Is it possible for the database to simply get out of synch? If I use APT to list all the "upgradable" packages, I get lots. $ apt list --installed | grep -i upgradable WARNING: apt does not have a stable CLI interface. Use with caution i...

Re: Mint 18.1 Will not boot with kernel 4.4.0-143

Definitely not. The kernel and the video drivers are provided through the Ubuntu 16.04 repositories, same as for Mint 18.3. All Mint 18.x releases share precisely the same Ubuntu 16.04 base. OK then, I am confused. I still have not seen an Nvidia update for my driver. $ apt list --installed | grep ...

Re: Mint 18.1 Will not boot with kernel 4.4.0-143

Thanks for the info. Maybe I will change my mirror and see what comes up.

Also, I still have 18.1 serena. Maybe that is starting to cause problems.

Re: Mint 18.1 Will not boot with kernel 4.4.0-143

I just ran the Update Manager and clicked on Refresh. It told me that my system is up to date. No Nvidia update is presented. Perhaps the mirror that I am looking at missed the Nvidia update? Seems unlikely, but I have no Nvidia update available. My repositories: $ cat official-package-repositories....

Interesting. I have not seen any Nvidia update. I just ran the Update Manager, and it says that my system is up to date. No Nvidia update in sight. [SOLVED]Mint 18.1 Will not boot with kernel 4.4.0-143

I just installed the upgrade to kernel 4.4.0-143 and the computer will not boot. After grub, it shows a black screen with the little glowing 5 dots and then it hangs.

I went back to kernel 4.4.0-142 and it boots.

Anybody else having this problem?

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

Update to my look at Mageia. I am running Mageia 7 Beta 1 to test it out. Considering that it is a beta release, it is fairly stable. I get literally hundreds of updates each day, but it is still running. @sediat, you might want to take a look at Mageia (not the Beta, of course). Mageia grew out of ...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

I am currently testing Mageia 7 Beta 1 on my backup machine. In spite of being a beta and hundreds of updates each day it is surprisingly stable. It is worth a look.

Re: Okular cannot speak

I figured it out. It turns out that I had to install Jovie instead of espeak to make this work on Linux Mint. I used espeak because that is what worked on my Mageia 7 setup, so I assumed that it was the tool that would be used on Mint. So, it works now, and Jovie has a GUI configuration dialog that ...

Well, OK then. Now I feel dumb. I figured out where Kmouth is. I had the package manager set to View=>Installed Packages only. View=>Available Packages was turned off, so it was not showing kmouth in the list. Duh. I installed kmouth, but Okular still has the "Speak" menu items grayed out. The searc...

[SOLVED]Okular cannot speak

I am running Mint 18.1 and trying to get Okular to read the documents it is displaying. The "speak" menu items in Tools are grayed out. I have espeak and all its libraries etc. installed. I can run espeak on the command line and enter text into it and it works fine. I have read that Okular needs kmo...

Re: Recommend a sub $80 all in one mostly for scanning?

On my system, the router negotiated a fixed IP address for the printer. I think I initiated that sequence from the printer. Since the printer installation process uses the IP address of the printer to talk to it, you don't want the IP getting moved around by the DHCP. After installing the printer, i...

Re: Recommend a sub $80 all in one mostly for scanning?

I would avoid inkjet printers that do not incorporate the print head in the cartridge, especially if the print function will see light use. I had an old Epson printer once that had separate color cartridges and separate print heads. I bought it because the ink refills were cheaper, and I could buy j...

Re: Recommend a sub $80 all in one mostly for scanning?

The HP printers work very well with Linux, and they are not very expensive. The Linux driver set, HPLIP, is supported by HP and works with many of their printers. I have an HP Deskjet 3510 with print/scan/copy, and it hooks up using WiFi, so I can put it anywhere. I think it cost about $100, but tha...
