Re: Add new wi fi router

I use two routers, but the one issued to me by my ISP is prone to malfunction, though has the ability to run in modem only mode, which is how I run it. The second is flashed with an alternative firmware DD-WRT, in this case, and from this I run my open VPN client and obtain DNS from as I have found ...

Re: Firejail not sandboxing [SOLVED]

Many programs are sandboxed automatically upon installation of Firejail, at least according to my understanding of it. If you install Firejail, then do nothing with it, and run your browser or qBittorrent or whatever, and type firejail --list , you may find it is already protected. This is because t...

Re: tried to solve open vpn problem ,now no internet?

I've messed around with various fixes for months in the past but the only one that was indeed permanent was when I offloaded DNS to my router, I use two, with one loaded with DD-WRT. So for DNS I enter the IP address of my router 192.168.1.1 and in the router config I enter whatever DNS servers that...

Re: VPN service issues

You might want to specify a keep alive ping in the "Advanced" tab. Outside chance that might work. Value entered is for illustrative purposes only, you may have to experiment/read up.

Re: Cannot copy files to another HD, read only.

Rebooted and it worked. I fixed it by creating a file in

Code: Select all

 /etc/udev/rules.d/
named

Code: Select all

90-usb-disks.rules
into which I added

Code: Select all

# UDEV Rules to change the permission of USB disks
#

KERNEL=="sd*[0-9]", ATTR{removable}=="1", ENV{ID_BUS}=="usb", MODE="0666"
rebooted.

[Solved]Cannot copy files to another HD, read only.

I have applied several updates recently and now cannot copy files to an external HD. The drive is apparently read only. Two days ago it was not. What can I do to allow me to copy files to this drive? I tried a procedure that I have used before when a flash drive was read only but that does not seem ...

Re: Labels and taskbar icons disappearing.

Rebooted and everything is back but it won't stay that way. The last fix that I tried managed to disappear the "Menu" button, the "Date" and the "Update Manager". The labels did not come back until reboot.

Thanks for that but it seems to have devastated my icons, a few have gone and the start button has vanished.

Re: Cloudflare, Mozilla, and DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH)

Good stuff. I have resorted to running DNS on my router as I had too many issues in Mint. I just wish DNS Crypt was installed on DD-WRT. I just couldn't rely on Mint working 100% no matter what configuration, DNS on my router has less problems, a lot less.

Re: How to make an FTP server/site

If your router is capable just install alternative firmware like "Tomato" or "DD-WRT". An FTP server is included, so all you would need to do is tick a box, set a username and password and apply. Your router should also have a USB port in which you would plug in an external drive, an old laptop driv...

Re: What's the verdict on this new DNS service?

I don't really fancy using 9.9.9.9 as the British Police are involved in it.

Re: What's the verdict on this new DNS service?

If I use Bind9 and tell it to use RESOLVCONF by changing the value from "no " to "yes" in /etc/default/bind9 And add 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 to RESOLVCONF replacing the default, will bind9 now ensure there are no DNS leaks from 1.1.1.1 ? I have tested it and it works but I do not know if it is secure.

Re: What's the verdict on this new DNS service?

I just thought I hadn't seen this discussed and I know there are some seasoned pro's around here that would really know about it. Thanks for the replies. I have tested it and for now I think I will stick to Dnscrypt or Bind9. Unless someone comes up with a tool to improve it, like I am not convinced...

I’m using it without any problems. I also see some faster surfing with it. NOW, is it safe ?????
Hoping to get some expert opinions so we can all make a decision on using it maybe.

Re: Fingerprint Scan and Password Managers and Lastpass

I have a usb fingerprint scanner on my 18.3 mate desktop, and it works fine for desktop login. I have some non-tech users (who share this PC) with 'forgot my password' issues. So, I thot I'd try fingerprint scanning with them. Most of authentication issues are with Chrome/browser logins. I use last...
