Re: Installing "alongside" insists to use HDD / sdb?

Trouble is in a VM you are installing on a blank disk. 'Something else' shows only 1 partition which can be edited. You need to install on a disk with existing Operating system to get the Install alongside option. Fire up your install DVD/USB and start the installation as far as the partitioning scr...

Re: Need Partition help before Graphic Installation

When I set up a new disk, I let mint start disk partition using the whole disk, then go back and adjust the that partition and add the partitions I want manually. I figure there is little chance of a stuff up. My /boot/efi is 2.3 GB 15-20GB sounds like you intend to have a separate /home partition? ...

Re: Migrating form 17.1 to 19

I interpreted your question as planning to do a fresh install - else why would you want aptik?

If I got you wrong, I agree. A fresh install will save you a lot of time & effort. You could put the new mint on a separate partition, install all your extra software, and then copy over your data over.

Re: Location of Timeshift snapshot backup files?

This line ‘/home/timeshift/snapshots/2018-12-1 is saying that the timeshift directory is on your /home partition - but outside of your /home/user directory. So open your file manager (caja/nemo/thunar) and select Downloads, then using the buttons in the tool bar, chose your name, then home. timeshif...

Re: Location of Timeshift snapshot backup files?

I'd like to see the out put from find / -iname 'timeshift'

It is on the partition - in another directory.

Powerwagon has a good suggestion

Open timeshift - settings - location. It's a little oblique, but

Reading through this post, it sounds plain sailing if you are comfortable with terminal: https://askubuntu.com/questions/17823/how-to-list-all-installed-packages, including one package I install manually from a downloaded .deb Alternatively, update manager|view|history lists all updates on your syst...

Re: Help adding a windows 7 shared printer

I have just spent many hours connecting my win7 in VBox to my samba server. Seems MS standard firewall blocks transmission between windows and Samba. (Win10 is proving more difficult) Suggest you disable your Win7 firewall, and test. if this works, find the firewall rule that allows you to print. So...

Re: Installing "alongside" insists to use HDD / sdb?

I don't know why this works, but edit the /etc/fstab file in your PCLos system by deleting the UUID entries at the start of each partition entry, and replacing it with the /dev/sda# The info is generally in the commented-out line above the UUID I know this is strongly discouraged, but it works It's ...

re:In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice.

You don't mention having re-booted twice after the chkdsk /f.

Don't know just what this does, but it probably is necessary if the ntfs-3g team recommend it.

Re: Mint Debian Editon 3 VS Mint Cinnamon19

This link lists several people who find LMDE quicker: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=280969 I don't think you will notice the speed difference. Mint19 allows PPAs, which makes installing some additional software easier. The other difference I notice is that LMDE3 has fewer softwar...

I gave one-note away when I noticed it kept only part of my copied notes. Used it mainly on Android tablet, but there is a web page to access your notes from anywhere.

Re: Sell me on Linux please!

That's a fair bit, but you have made a start by using some open source software already. I take it you understand the benefits of software being constantly reviewed and improved. I needed a laptop, and wouldn't have Win; better-half wouldn't have linux at that time, so bought a macbook. I had it dua...

Re: Restarting hangs on mint splashcreen

It sometimes feels like the system has hung for me, as well. But if I push the 'esc' key, I get a cryptic message that some process or 2 is completing. wait the specified time and the close-down should continue.
