Re: dropped the graphics after changing graphics cards

After changing the graphics card, did you check to see if the correct driver was installed?

Re: NO graphics after new graphics card

I think there was a fundamental slip or two in logic - the first being that Windows and Linux are the same in any way. The second fundamental slip was in the install procedure and probably the physical attachment to the new video card. The last time I installed a new video card, I forgot to change t...

Re: Cannot Move Home Directory

O.K., I'm not telling you to do anything different from what WharfRat wants you to do. I did something very similar to what you are trying to do a few weeks ago. I replaced my primary drive with an SSD. That primary drive had the / partition, the /home partition, and SWAP. I had a secondary drive th...

Re: reasons not to use automatic login? [solved]

I don't disagree. However, encryption keeps the casual snoop out, but does nothing against the dedicated thief with the right tools. That dedicated thief with the wrong tools, might just whack your drive badly enough that you need to recover - if you have that. No matter what your "padlock" is, back...

Re: Multiple Distro Attempts - - Installer Crash Error

A 2GB USB thumb drive should be plenty for an LM Live install :)

I'm thinking it may be the DVD drive mechanism itself and not the DVDs.

Re: wifi problem in linux mint 19.1

Were you able to use wifi during the install? Sometimes it's just a matter of re-entering the wifi password into the network management application to get it going again. But, if you will open a terminal and enter inxi -Fx and then post the results back in a CODE box (the </> button) in you reply, t...

Re: Multiple Distro Attempts - - Installer Crash Error

Have you tried installing from a USB thumb drive?

They seem to be a bit more reliable than CD/DVD for use as an install agent. This is just based on observing install issues in various Linux forums.

A comma (,)is not valid in a linux password
If a comma is not valid, then there should have been an error message upon creation of the PW.

Re: Cannot Move Home Directory

Go back into your /etc/fstab file and make sure the changes took. You did make the changes in sudo, correct?

Re: Can't Seem To Boot From USB Stick On HP Laptop

Possibly, the old laptop uses the old BIOS which requires an MBR for booting. The newer PC/Laptop could be UEFI which has a different boot mechanism that will not work on the old laptop.

So did you install to a laptop or desktop? Or did you install to a USB thumb drive?

Re: installing linux mint 18.3

The ONLY way for that to happen is a difference between the two. it would be a case difference in a letter, a . versus a , an extra space entered in one or the other, a misspelling such as red,chiar345 versus red,chair345, a switch between the numbers, anything that makes the password look different...

Re: Cannot update sudo command from terminal

If you enter

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
in a terminal, it will prompt you for your password. This would be your normal login password that you setup during the install of LM. Enter that password at the prompt, and it will continue its process.

Re: USB Flash file-Permissions

First, you need to know if and where the USB gets mounted, then you will need elevated permissions by using sudo on the command line.

Someone else may have a different view of how to do this in a GUI.

Re: Backups and imaging - need for a tutorial?

rsync, grsync, Luckybackup, and so many others are based on rsync. It's a simple yet flexible command line tool. A cron job is a method of setting up a task that will run on a schedule that the user establishes, doing what the user wants done, while specifying where that task will be done. It, too, ...

Re: are you still supposed to make a swap partition?

I think it's a very good idea to create an actual SWAP partition during the install. Yes, the installer will create a swap file, but when you express your wishes you get what you believe is the correct size. My SWAP partition rarely gets any use, but it's there if the OS needs to swap out memory pag...

Re: 18.3 or 19.1 won't install

UEFI?

If so, disable Secure Boot, insert the USB installer and make sure it shows up as the first in the list of drives, make sure to set AHCI. Do not set the mode to Legacy. Save the settings, and reboot. The installer should work and find the actual system drive(s).

Re: delete login password

Peter, the answer to your question can be found somewhere on the forums, or at least I believe it can. People ask now and then how to make their system password-less, and the usual answer is that it's not a good idea to do that. However, in one of the threads on this subject, somebody mentioned tha...
