Re: Grub rescue always after shutdown

We need to know if your Mint install on your hard drive was successful. If there are problems when trying to boot from the hard drive, then we can figure out how to fix it. But, if there are no problems when booting from the hard drive, then you are good.

Re: Grub rescue always after shutdown

What is the USB drive that shows as ID-2: USB /dev/sdb model: Cruzer_Edge size: 32.0GB in the inxi query? There is the Linux Mint to install. I believe the problem could be the HD, I tried Hiren's Boot on it and running and HD health status program, It returns the HD has just 31MB, what I can't und...

Re: Mint and Ubuntu both stuck on boot up

Been a while since I did things on a Windows machine, but as far as I remember Windows knows nothing about filesystems that are not Windows. So it shows the 186GB as "unallocated" even though there is Linux-related data and a Linux filesystem. You need to use the Linux equivalent of Disk Management ...

Bummer about the BIOS update. I think there might be a way to run a Windows pre-environment from a USB to run exe files, but I've never done that.
FreeDOS, and similar MS-DOS-like products are usually used to upgrade the BIOS on older machines. Do a Google search on

Re: Linux Mint will not shut down.

I just did a fresh install of Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon on a computer that's about 3 years old. I have an Intel DH87MC motherboard, and I just updated the BIOS and reset everything to factory defaults. The computer will still not shut down from Linux. If I do a Shut Down, it just restarts. Is there a ...

Re: [SOLVED] Please Fix UNETBOOTIN or REPLACE it

I too used unetbootin on my desktop unit when it had Kubuntu 16.04, and it created USB thumb drives with no sweat. Now that box is on Kubuntu 18.04 (thanks to unetbootin), but unetbootin is not included in that version of the distro. In Linux, dd is available and also works perfectly to build USB th...

Re: Upgrading Current 18.1 install to 19

Hi guys, I currently am on Mint 18.1 w/ MATE and kernel 4.8. I have never upgraded from a current install before, I have in the past just stuck with LTS versions or did fresh installs. I want to upgrade to Mint 19, have two main questions, and one probably stupid question: One: In my update manager...

Re: [SOLVED] Recycle an iMac with a failed HD

Have you looked for any You Tubes on the specific model iMac? There are some that show the horrendous process of opening the case to replace the CPU and another to replace the hard drive. It doesn't look like fun, but it should be possible. Again, it may depend on the specific iMac model.

Re: Installing Mint 19 MATE After Using 18.3 For Awhile

It was a Linux Format mag that I bought at the bookstore a couple of weeks ago. I'm sure they probably tweaked the installer somewhat. It did show a menu at the beginning to select one of a few items they were pushing in that particular issue. It was a well done process, and in the end it did select...

Installing Mint 19 MATE After Using 18.3 For Awhile

I got a Linux DVD from a magazine. It includes Mint 19 in various flavors. So far it detected my 32 bit Toshiba and that it needs MATE vice Cinnamon. It has gone through the "Something Else" install option and has formatted the / partition, but not /home - as asked. Downloading and installing stuff ...

Re: Looking for backup answers.

There are a whole bunch of backup methods and applications - pick, or two. Use them regularly and back up to an external device. All that you really need to backup is anything in /home/<you>, plus any other directories that you have added to the filesystem that contain data that's important to you. ...

Re: Why dual boot?

If Mint is so good why is there so little installation information about single booting. I have been given an Acer Aspire C24-760 All-in-One to use as a spare computer. It had Windows 10 installed. It does not have an optical drive and it is a UEFI machine. Installation of Mint is different from th...

Re: Can't get Alfa wireless adapter to work

That adapter has a Realtek chipset, which is generally well supported in Linux (I've not looked to see if that specific driver is in the current kernel stack). Perhaps, it just needs to be connected to your router a via a network manager GUI (SSID, pre-shared key, etc.).

Re: Assistance for switching to Linux from windows 10

The GUI user interface in Linux has come a very long way since the early days. I really like how it works and makes life so easy. But, there is a lot of utility in the command line. You don't "have to" use the CLI to get along in Linux world, but it does have its own usefulness. My job requires that...

I'm not saying that this is a bad idea, but once a list is started it has to be maintained with corrections, additions, and deletions; and facts only, no opinions
