Re: Why dual boot?

If Mint is so good why is there so little installation information about single booting. I have been given an Acer Aspire C24-760 All-in-One to use as a spare computer. It had Windows 10 installed. It does not have an optical drive and it is a UEFI machine. Installation of Mint is different from th...

Re: Can't get Alfa wireless adapter to work

That adapter has a Realtek chipset, which is generally well supported in Linux (I've not looked to see if that specific driver is in the current kernel stack). Perhaps, it just needs to be connected to your router a via a network manager GUI (SSID, pre-shared key, etc.).

Re: Assistance for switching to Linux from windows 10

The GUI user interface in Linux has come a very long way since the early days. I really like how it works and makes life so easy. But, there is a lot of utility in the command line. You don't "have to" use the CLI to get along in Linux world, but it does have its own usefulness. My job requires that...

I'm not saying that this is a bad idea, but once a list is started it has to be maintained with corrections, additions, and deletions; and facts only, no opinions

Especially if it is to be a "sticky: at the top of the forum.

Just keep that in mind ...

Re: Can only log in as root

If your /home is back, I would immediately do a backup of /home to a CD/DVD/thumbdrive/USB connected hard drive - anything to save what you have. Then do that routinely - for the rest of your life!! You never know ...

Re: mint 15 wireless

A couple of questions to help solve this:

Did it ever work on Mint 15?
If so, it would be useful to know what changed at the same time wireless stopped.

Why are you using Mint 15?
That version is old, I don't believe it is supported anymore.

By contrast in jglen490's response root access is a very narrow exception use case and is best handled with "sudo" procedures suggests to me (from the context and use of the word "exception") that "sudo" takes the root password I think what jglen490 means is that root access when used would be ...

Re: Context for user and root passwords

Agree. The assumption in many Linux distros (Mint, all the *buntu's) is that root access is a very narrow exception use case and is best handled with "sudo" procedures. Therefore, upon installation these Linux distros only ask for setting up one user with one password that is used for "normal" user-...

Re: Linux Mint Has To Be Booted With nomodeset + Software Rendering Mode

Looks like a great candidate for the Mate desktop. That's what I use on my Toshiba laptop. Mate has a decent look to it and runs very well on my light weight machine.

Re: How to create ISO with legacy Firefox?

I'm not sure what you mean by "Quantum disaster". Is Firefox not running, or do you have some sort of philosophical difference with the change in how Firefox is made? There are plenty of good browsers available, such as Vivaldi, or you could use Firefox 52ESR for as long as its supported. As noted, ...

Re: Any decent alternative to Winamp?

This Clementine is so bad. Can't right click on a folder and Play All. Main window is huge and totally cluttered. Clunky and freezes my computer. I figured out how to make the Open WIth - Clementine appear, but when I tried to do that on a folder with various MP3, the first song played and after th...

Re: Install secondary HDD

You can do that, in fact you can do both. When I added a second drive (/dev/sdb) to my Kubuntu desktop machine, I used the whole disk as one physical partition (dev/sdb1) and mounted it as a part of /home in parallel with my usual home directory. So on sdb1 it mounts as /home/multimedia. When lookin...

Re: Yet another kernel update question

Since you are on LM 17.3, you current kernel is probably in the 3.3 series. While I recall that there is 3.3 kernel that has the Spectre-Meltdown fixes, going to the later 4.4.0-116 should not hurt.

To be sure what the current kernel is, you can run though the kernel list.

Without knowing the specs on that computer, it would be difficult to recommend anything. However, I have LM 18.2 Mate on my Toshiba laptop and it works well. The specs for that machine are summarized in my signature, below.

Re: New user cannot install Mint

No need for rants at this point! I'm assuming the picture is from booting the USB and not booting the computer, post-install. When you downloaded the LM .ISO file, did you verify the checksum? What did you use to burn the .ISO file to the USB? What are the specs of the target machine for the install...

Re: cinnamon on 18.2 keeps crashing

There's a couple of things going on. I started with LM 18.2 Cinnmon on my laptop. It ran fine for a while, but after an update, it kept crashing to its fallback DE. I reinstalled 18.2 with Mate and that worked great! The other is the 4.8 kernel. 18.2 was released before the SPectre/Meltdown party st...
