Re: File location question

How do you in linux, change where a file is stored? For example, on my Windows box I have five drives, a boot drive, a game drive, a storage drive, and two backup drives. I have documents, music, videos, and pictures going to my "E" drive. Instead of loading on the "C" drive, I have them pointed to...

Re: SOLVED lm18.1-64 cinn. How to upgrade to 18.2 NOT 18.3

On the command line, performing an update brings the selection list up to date and identifies new versions of existing software. Performing an upgrade actually installs the new versions of software. Again, on the command line there is an upgrade option that brings in all the software changes that re...

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

I run both Kubuntu 16.04.3 and Linux Mint 18.2 Mate - two different boxes. The differences between the two DEs are real, but by no means insurmountable. I pop between the two systems without a hitch, once I understood how the same functionality works on each box - and it's not that big of a jump. So...

Re: Nvidia Driver Fix - Can't Login Anymore

If you want to re-install LM with your current partitioning scheme (i.e., everything in one partition, plus swap), reinstalling will probably cause you to lose everything in the/home directory. If you can live with that, then reinstall. if you have anything at all important (i.e., docs, email, pictu...

by KBD47 » Mon Feb 19, 2018 11:16 am May be worth trying Softmaker Office. They have a free version, but to use docx and other newer Windows file formats there is a paid version for Linux. Worth looking at: http://www.softmaker.com/en/softmaker-office KBD47's link to Softmaker is probably your sure...

Re: Security updates to older kernel install in 18.3 cinnamon

You can control, if a kernel is listed in the updater, to install it or not. If the kernel you installed is for a specific purpose and is irreplaceable for that purpose, then just don't allow a listed kernel to install. I don't know if kernel 4.9.76 was updated with any Spectre/Meltdown patches when...

Re: Installing HPLIP Drivers on HP LaserJet Pro MFP M127fw

What process did you use to upgrade to 3.17.11?

It sounds like you may have done that outside the normal software updating channel in LM.

It's recoverable, but just need to know how you did it, so we can give you a more complete solution.

Re: [SOLVED] Is it possible to install Linux onto the hard disk without deleting Windows Vista?

Thanks to all of you. I have already installed Linux by the option "Install Linux Mint alongside them". I am now running Mint, but I can't find "GParted". Where is it? Good job on installing LM! When you get a moment, in a terminal enter: inxi -Fzx and then post the results inside the code tags tha...

Re: Is Linux Mint based on Ubuntu or Debian?

Actually, the answer is "yes".

LM is a direct descendant of Ubuntu, however Ubuntu is a technological "child" of Debian via the .deb packaging methodology.

There are other similarities, as well as differences.

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

I've been running Kubuntu on my desktop machine for around 10 years. Most of those years have been on whatever LTS version was available. I've not had any insurmountable problems, and very few really annoying problems - at all, ever in those 10 years. While I enjoy LM, also, I plan on running with K...

I started with 18.2 Cinnamon on my laptop. A few udates later and Cinnamon would drop back to something that was not Cinnamon. I now have 18.2 Mate. Appearance wise, not much difference, but my old laptop is much happier with Mate.

Re: installation DVD does not work on my system

Just remember that the GPL license disallows a default position of loading non-open source software. Such software can be requested by the user, and there is an option in the installer process to do so.

Maybe some Linux distros are less strict on that point.

How do I hide things so that a superficial perusal won't reveal anything suspicious? I have no problem with his requirements - he ne...
