Re: How to upgrade to Linux Mint 20

Thank you \o/

The upgrade path worked fine for me. It was the first time I upgraded this way, and I am happy with the new version

Everything works as before, not bad for a 9 years old machine!

Re: Don't be boring - add an avatar!

Hello! I followed the advice and added an avatar to my profile. It is the French Mozilla logo, from way back (2006) I believe.

Re: Timeshift screwed up system: Snapshots in Timeshift are hidden now?

Sort of beginner here, but I think it should be stressed that Timeshift snapshots would be better, if possible, if it is used on another drive ;) This is what I do, and it has saved my life a couple of times, including a SSD failure. Combined with a file backup tool, Timeshift is invaluable.

Re: Malicious keylogger?

I'm posting because I got the same spam last night, but return email address is one from my contact list which I haven't used in 4+ years. So I wonder how he got that? Faking your email as a sender is easy, but getting your contacts is not, and could be the sign that your email address is or has be...

Re: Help! Windows 10 OS installation in VM

Funny story: a few months ago, I bought a second hand ThinkPad that had a licence key for Windows 7, with a sticker in the battery compartment, but when I installed Mint, I wiped the whole internal SSD, having at the time no use for Microsoft's OS Unfortunately, after a while, I discovered I needed ...

Re: "System Info" utility very limited in Mint 19. No "Hardware Manager"?

If you click "upload system information", it will open in your browser a page containing all available details

Otherwise, launch a terminal and type inxi -F for the same output. The inxi command allows filtering results, such as inxi -m for memory. To find out about all filters, type man inxi

Please be gentle with old chaps, they may be rough sometimes, but they are much appreciated. And in my humble opinion, rants and personal attacks do not serve any purpose here ;)

Re: Project: sync tool

Athenaeum suits me fine on the grounds that you'd probably have to go searching go-ogle for the meaning. I encourage self-sufficiency in that department :) Hello catweazel. I followed your advice and googled for Athenaeum. First result, and domain name strict match, return this . Being French, I de...

It's a worthy cause but I shall not be signing that petition as I don't want change.org tracking me or collating data about me.
Or even selling its databases to whoever is interested in collecting valid e-mail addresses and political views ;)

Re: Monthly News – February 2019

I actually like very much the new logo proposal, as I like material design.

However, I believe it would be difficult to please everybody, and I think it is a trivial detail. If one does not like the icon, it is very simple to replace it...

I would definitely follow JeremyB's advice : change the disk that contains Windows and keep it safe, and replace it in case you have to return the computer.

Re: Timeshift in Mint 19

I have used Timeshift on a couple of occasions to revert from a mistake or a broken upgrade (which was a mistake in the first place). It works really fine, and each time I recovered a working system within a few minutes. Another use I've had of Timeshift, is when I recently changed my computer. Befo...

Greetings from France

Hello I subscribed to this forum some time ago but never came to introduce myself. As I am very likely to stick around, here it goes. I live in south-eastern France in Toulon, by the sea. I have been fiddling with web servers for the past 20 years, mostly on Linux systems, but decided to use Mint on...

Re: Do I need to use the Nvidia driver ?

It's recommended because according to nvidia docs that's the one. OK, I understand that Mint devs cannot try all hardware combinations and have to rely on some manufacturers' recommendations. I will mark this thread as solved, thanking you two for your useful advices. Do I need to say how I am happ...

Re: Do I need to use the Nvidia driver ?

Thank you WharfRat for this answer. I think that I will stick to your advice, unless some other member can show me advantages in trying again.

If I may ask however, for my education, what would be the use case for installing the proprietary driver, and why is it recommended by the driver manager ?
