Re: Kinda NUB about cookies in firefox

Cookies are entries in a sqlite table, not separate files. A while back I set up some scripts so I could massage cookies, but I guess extensions are the way to go thesee days.

Re: I made a HUGE mistake - please help!

Your big mistake was to not have regular backups. The normal FOSS answer is testdisk/photorec, but I wouldn't be confident if what you used couldn't do the job.

I have the exact opposite problem - I am forever trying to eliminate the duplicate photos I have spread all over the place.

Re: [SOLVED] 2 different grub installed in the wrong partitions

More correctly it can launch a properly constructed Linux kernel. I would bet Mint kernels don't fall into that category although I haven't tested.
As Rod himself points out, rEFInd is a boot manager, not a boot loader. Each has it's place, depending on circumstance.

Re: Boot repair problem

My advice: - read the log you posted. Hint, go to the bottom of it. - make sure you know where your latest backup is. - put aside some money for a new disk. - run smartctl against the disk If you are (really, really) lucky, only the swap is bad. So try and mount your data and get another backup, jus...

Re: I just can’t get the available Networks to show up.

Broadcom is such a pox.
Get a new hard-disk and install onto that. If you still have long boot times we can look at that then - using USB (USB1.1 maybe) longterm is just looking for frustration.

10 seconds ?.
Define what you mean by "very long boot time".

That isn't what was asked for.
Certainly in earlier versions of Win, you couldn't install to an external. Haven't bothered to look at win8/10.

Re: Force fsck in Mint

You don't have to do anything - the -c and -i options have been ignored for years. As I said, the fsck is done automatically in need. A much better solution. The manpages don't correlate to the source code changes. Edit: maybe I should clarify - the mkfs manpage should be read in conjunction with th...

Re: Force fsck in Mint

Presuming ext4, nowadays fsck is run automatically (if needed) every mount.
You can check the current state of the filesystem using tune2fs.

Re: Grub error after deleting Linux Mint partitions using Windows 10

You need to interrupt the power-up sequence. Generally the splash screen will tell you what key to hit - either to get into the EFI firmware screens, or simply the (EFI) boot list so you can select the USB. Often it's F10 or F12. Then run Win10 recovery.

How lame is that ?.
I predominantly use CLI, but following a recommendation somewhere on this list, I've started to get very fond of XFE. Very quick, and has all I need. No idea if, or how, it could be incorporated into a DE smoothly.

No maybe about it - as Morpheus (almost) said "we can only show you the door. You're the one that has to walk through it."

That fstab looks ok - did you do the update-initramfs ?.

Very last century. I park a pi3 as a getway/router so the entire house can be protected without having to constantly update each machine individually.

Re: Reconfigure Grub.cfg for larger drive installation

As I said above, you need to ensure references to filesystems/partitions on the new disk only refer to the new disk. All references. The UUID for the root in the new disk fstab probably refers back to the smaller disk. I'm guessing grub did as well, but the update-grub should have fixed that. As per...

Re: My dualboot option has dissapeared

Normally just run update-grub and see if it finds Windoze. If not, go https://github.com/arvidjaar/bootinfoscript and run the script. Post the output.

Just saw your update, don't bother with boot-info, I was just trying to see if Win was still there.

Re: Coaxing a Windows program for Canon DC to Install on Mint.

Yes, I was wondering if I should mention darktable. I think photo software is a bit like photography itself. We all seem to start out with something small (point-and-shoot), then see what others are producing, and we get into something better , then (expensive ... ) lenses, then we're locked...

Re: Migrating from Yum to Apt

yum, now dnf, like the Debian tools has history. The Redhat world is more aggressive in insisting things move on and old stuff gets dropped. The userbase (especially Fedora) is much more amenable to this than I suspect the Debian and derivative users would be - evidenced by the systemd furore in Deb...
