Help Needed Understanding a Concept Used by MythTV

Greetings, I am in the process of trying to install MythTV on Mint 18.2. In an attempt to help myself and possibly future MythTV users as well, I am undertaking the re-writing of the installation and configuration manual for MythTV in a way that is both consistent in approach and makes sense even to...

Re: Looking for Guidance with Installation of KODI

Hello my friend and thank you once again! :D Your 'How-To' to resolve my situation could not have arrive at a more opportune time. I have previously configured my router to assign the same IP address to all of my devices that connect through it based on their MAC address, so I have that licked alrea...

Re: Looking for Guidance with Installation of KODI - PART DEAUX

Now we're on to round two of needing assistance installing Kodi. After managing to completely mangle this computer's ability to connect to the Internet (in any meaningful way), I have started over again with a fresh install of Mint 18.2. Since I have decided to use MythTV for the PVR function of my ...

Re: RESOLVED - Issue with DNS Resolution

Yes, I did look at the file /resolv.conf, but as I had no idea as to what information it should contain, the conclusion I reached was that the path of least resistance lay in beginning over again from a fresh install. As I hadn't put in much time and effort into customization of the install of Mint ...

Re: How to have VPN connection establish at startup?

Having just re-installed Linux Mint 18.2, I realize that the information I provided was incorrect. For that, I am profoundly sorry. In the first place, the OpenVPN plugins required by the Network Manager are installed by default. In the second place, the procedure outlined by rbsudo is spot-o...

Re: Issue with DNS Resolution

I spent quite a bit of time thinking about this issue last night. Clearly, it boils down to the effected computer's ability to resolve DNS addresses. Therefore it MUST involve some part(s) of Mint that are involved with that process. Falling back to look for similar issues with Ubuntu 16.04, I found...

Re: User's Guide for LightDM?

This stuff is over my head and, to be honest, above my interest level (other than that I'm happy with the Mint 17 login stuff - from the grub menu that I've added a nice scenary background picture to all the way to <DING>, your desktop has arrived - which I'll try to figure out how to keep/install ...

... on the chance that someone might be asking 'why don't you just Google the answers for yourself?', my response is 1) I DO NOT LIKE and DO NOT TRUST Google and 2) I DID perform several searches to try and find the answers on my own, but was unable to. ... I don't use Google Search either. I prefe...

Re: User's Guide for LightDM?

While it is not my wish to dispute what you have written, in my instance the facts speak for themselves. I also want you to know that I have not done anything at all to modify the display manager that was installed by default by the distribution of Mint 18.2. ~ $ apt-cache policy lightdm lightdm: In...

Re: User's Guide for LightDM?

You know, as I began to dig into the ArchWiki entry for the LightDM display manager, I began to wonder what sorts of goodies our repositories hold for Mint and Ubuntu users to use with LightDM. An update of the packages available from the repositories and a search of the parameter 'lightdm' provided...

Re: User's Guide for LightDM?

Thank you VERY much!

I've only had a look at the outline for the wiki entry, but it looks to be quite thorough and it shouldn't be particularly difficult to 'transcode' the information for Mint/Ubuntu! 8)

RESOLVED - Issue with DNS Resolution

Howdy folks, I have a real head-scratcher of an issue with one of the two computers running Mint 18.2, Cinnamon desktop that are hard wired to my modem/router. :?: Basically, the one computer acts as though it doesn't have a connection to the Internet. My VPN times out after launch, I can't update p...

Re: How to have VPN connection establish at startup?

Howdy raffael84, I use ProtonMail and think its great, but I've had no experience with their VPN service. IF you are using Cinnamon desktop (which I am) AND you have configuration (.ovpn) files acquired from Proton, then the rest should be as easy as falling off a frog! I'm going to start from the b...

User's Guide for LightDM?

Greetings, My systems are all running Linux Mint 18.2 with Cinnamon desktop. If my understanding is correct, the default display manager is LightDM. I am interested in changing up the appearance of the login windows of two of my computers. I have found where the settings may be changed, however I do...

Re: Looking for Guidance with Installation of KODI

Sorry to be so long between posts. Good news! I was able to resolve the overscan issue! I used the command xrandr to adjust the vertical and horizontal axis. Then, because the xandr command is only good for the session in which it is invoked, I created a script that runs at bootup, and all with just...

Re: Looking for Guidance with Installation of KODI

Alas and alack! the How-To-Geek has failed me! Actually, my TV set has failed me. I just spoke with some tech rep from Philips customer care who told me., in essence, 'you cawn't get theah from heah', meaning Philips engineers were either too lazy or lacked enough insight to make disabling overscan ...

Re: Looking for Guidance with Installation of KODI

LOL. Sure! NOW you think to tell me about the trick with the ALT key and the mouse! (j/k) Okay, I will read the How-To Geek article recommended by Mintbean (and Thank You!). I have found their articles to be clearly written before, I expect nothing different with this one. The one question still out...
