Have you checked to make sure your Linux kernel is up to date?
I had a similar problem when I went to Mint 18, but it was eventually solved with a kernel update.

I've had this issue as well. I first noticed it when I was using Xubuntu 14.04 LTS and upgraded to 16.04. Switched to Linux Mint 18/Cinnamon and still had the problem.
