Re: What to do if you can't login to Linux Mint 18.x

To say this issue has been a nightmare might be an understatement. In a previous post I reported that I was able gain access eventually, following advice here, to Linux Mint. I also commented that I was unable to get internet access. Investigating I also noticed that the firewall was being turned of...

Re: What to do if you can't login to Linux Mint 18.x

I am grateful for this thread. Dank u wel, mijnheer Xenopeek. Having been a victim of todays Virtualbox saga I tried many ways, as recorded in another thread here, of getting Linux Mint up and running again. Many of the tips, for some reason or another failed to work. However the info here (not the ...

Re: After todays update-->initctl: Unable to connect to Upstart

Having another computer -- Sony VAIO laptop on Windows 10 - I have been able to read the issues facing many Linux Mint users since the Vitualbox update.. However, I guess there are far more with issues than those posting here. As far as my desktop - Linux 18.3 Sylvia, 64 bit with the latest Kernel a...

Re: LinuxMint is less safe than Windows (for newbies)

As see it those moving up to Linux (Mint in my case) from Windows often, quite wrongly, assume it to be similar. It may have similar appearances and usage, for the most part, having many familiar applications and browsers. However, it is rather like driving a different car: you have to read the manu...

Re: Read this

Having a dual boot system on my desktop I guess I have experience of both Linux Mint (now on Sylvia 18.3) and Windows 10. Far from a prison I find Linux a relaxation compared to Windows. Why is that? Well once a week I boot up Windows on the desktop and whilst windows goes through its long winded an...

Re: If Linux went away, what would you use?

Reluctantly and it is most definitely reluctantly I have chosen Windows. Probably not 10, I still have an 8.1 CD. I am not familiar with any other operating systems so that was my only choice. However having used Linux Mint Cinnamon for four months using 18.1 and 2 and updated to 3 today, I dread ha...

Re: browser: alternatives to Firefox 57

I have used Opera for a good number of years now, here on Linux and on Windows XP onwards. I am more than happy with it. Prior to that I did use Firefox. I detested IE and AOL. Firefox is a second string for me - just in case I guess - and have upgraded to their newest offering, 57, though have not ...

Re: Firefox

In the past month or so complaints about Firefox sluggardness seem to have appeared on this Forum. I have used Opera for years, with the 'other' op system and now with Linux Mint. I prefer Opera to Chrome - less invasive. I tried Vivaldi a couple of times, briefly, but as it is dependant on Chrome e...

Re: How to uninstall non English fonts? LM18

I did it from searching for font in Synaptic Package Manager and going down the list marking them for removal, then removing them all at once. You can also do this in Mint's Software Manager by clicking the Installed button, then searching for font/fonts and removing those which you do not use. I f...

Re: trouble with FireFox and Thunderbird today

Using Mint 18.2 Cinnamon. Initial installation 18.1 Cinnamon about a month ago but soon upgraded. Firefox is very slow to load and I rarely use it. I down loaded Opera (which is what I use on Windows 10, this deskktop and VAIO laptop as default). Opera is sharp, fast, has VPN option - all in all far...

Re: [SOLVED] A Red "X" on UM icon

Well, this red cross affair arrived on my screen today (14th.). Was not too concerned about it as like many small issues they usually get resolved.
Thank you Greerd for the advice. It was soon sorted rectified.

Re: Skype seems to be missing! (Manual download) [SOLVED]

Up thread a couple of mentions are made of the most recent Skype update. On W10 the newer version of Skype gave a link (not too obvious) that could allow you to have what was referred to as the 'classic' style page.
Maybe the same choice is available to Linux Mint users. I will look into it.

Re: Thunderbird marks all my incomming mail as spam.

Hi Andrew, You may well have done this but have you tried looking at the account settings, and the junk settings in the left hand panel. You need to be ssure the personal and collected address boxes are checked. I agree Thunderbird does mark many mails as junk but I accept that it takes time to lear...

Re: Skype seems to be missing! (Manual download) [SOLVED]

When I installed Skype on my initial Linux Mint 18.1 Serena just over a week ago it was a bare bones web page compared to the usual one I have on Windows. Much of the features were not there. I have considered Skype for my now upgraded Linux Mint 18.2 Sonya version but decided against it. The reason...

Re: Linux Mint 18.2 Cinnamon - new user

Hi Jimallyn, thank you for your comments. Echolink would be the Windows programme I use and I did read on their web page that wine was a probable assisting agent. However as I have dual booted it does not present a problem as I can soon reboot to W10. Yup, I know some folks have a low regard for Win...

Linux Mint 18.2 Cinnamon - new user

Greetings from SW England. I have often considered Linux/Ubuntu having read good reports. I started out with XP, through 7 and 8.1 on a pc and W7 on a laptop finally ending up with version 10.on them both (although they do have a different appearance). My computer needs are quite small and that I gu...
