Re: Which browser is recommended?

I am sure this question has arisen before and my choice of browser has not changed since I replied to a previous thread. I use Opera in my desktop, laptop and Android tablet. I have used it for many years - eve when I had Windows o/s. Firefox is available, as it comes with Linux Mint, but I do not u...

Re: How many are 100% Linux here?

I knew of Linux, but not much about it, for some while before I plucked up the courage to switch to Linux Mint. Better the devil you know than the one you do not, they say! I was totally fed up with W 10 and all the unwanted items that arose with every update so I ran dual boot for a year, but event...

Re: 80 year old joins linux mint 19.1

Welcome from another octogenarian. I started with XP then 7 and 8.1 ending up with the horrors of 10.
Noticeable with Linux is that you have to make your own decisions, it does't hold your hand like Windows. Linux is a challenge but there is plenty of advice here.

Re: Question about new Tablet hardware platform

Many thanks, Deepakdeshp, for the slashgear link. I understood a fair bit of it. :) Anyway, as they say 'softly, softy, catchee monkey'' My new Tablet arrives today; t is a Fusion5 10.1 Android 8.1 Oreo touch screen 32GB October 2018 model. It is something more easily portable than my Sony laptop an...

Question about new Tablet hardware platform - SOLVED

I have been a Linux Mint user now for more than a couple of years and am quite happy with it. I ditched W10 and W7 with a little trepidation. Windows does hold your hand somewhat. Linux less so, although luckily there is a great deal of help and advice here of course. LM Tessa is on both my desktop ...

Re: chrome or firefox?

I logged into two banking accounts today. The first once credentials and password (which I never save) were entered progressed as usual. The second account said it didn't recognise my device and asked for my place of birth (a precautionary device). Once entered progress was as usual. Both were UK ba...

Re: chrome or firefox?

I used a few browsers in my initial earning about computers and how they work. Eventually, as Opera improved i stayed there. This was all with Windows (XP, 7, 8.1 and 10) Taking the plunge I installed Linux Mint 17.1 - dual boot with W10. I kept to Opera as it offered good features as far as I was c...

Re: Windows 10's Clock is affected by the Dual boot

The time on Linux Mint 19 is EDT before sign in, after sign in it is local time.
I had the issue with Windows time being out of step, by one hour, when switching briefly to Wiindows from Linux with a dual boot system.
I solved the problem easily by getting rid of Windows!

Re: How important is it to turn the firewall on?

Having experienced the vagaries of Windows updates over the years (I not longer have Windows) I always check, as a matter of experience, that the firewall is still switched on after any major Mint upgrades.

Re: An Englishman's View of Australia!

Well, we have had two great Australians on our tv screens some years ago, namely Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson. They were able to demonstrate to those in the UK what Australians were like and how they thought. Apart form some bushwhacker called Barry Humphries we see few Ozzies on tv, exce...

Re: Does anybody still use DVDs?

Not often, but for some reason, only known to my desktop, a DVD is the simplest, most straight forward of installing or re-installing Linux Mint.
I do have many CD's/DVD's with details of islands, lighthouses and other factors that I use in my Ham radio hobby.

Re: Catweazel - over and out

The 11th. century, which is the time that Catweazel apparently lived, the language spoken would be old English very much based on Anglo-Saxon. The Norman influence had not got deeply rooted into English at that time and Catweazel, who looks a serf, most likely knew little Norman French. I neve...

Re: Firefox problem - Server Not Found. Alternative browsers?

Try Opera. Of those you mention the more well known are often intrusive; I know little of thee less well known ones. I suggest you download Opera (for Linux) from the Opera web site and not anywhere else. I have used Opera for years and it has some good features, If you don't like it - no reason I c...

Re: Opera Missing from Synaptic

I have used Opera for years in the other place and now in LM.
The version available on LM is an old version - or it was. M suggestion is to download Opera from:
https://www.opera.com/
You will see Linux is an option. It worked fine for me in the three LM Cinnamon 18's and does so in LM Cinnamon 19.

Re: Indonesian volcano puts on a show for yours truly

I hope Mt. Agung is quieter in December, giving you chance to get closer. It is always active and its gods frequently remind the locals of their presence. It has has had a couple of big eruptions this year causing panic, movement of people and livestock and grounding flights. As I have family on Bal...

Re: What sends noobs running back to Windows?

Linux Mint 19, despite one 'hiccup', did not send me back to Windows, in fact it was totally the opposite. I erased Windows 10 when installing LM19. I go along with the comments about gaming etc. which is a principal reason for a 'U' turn back to Windows. There will always be, as in other walks of l...

Re: Kernel 4.15.0-24

Back at the end of June, when I clean installed LM19 I found there were issues with this 24 kernel. I had to do a re-install but kept the 4.15.0.23 that seemed to be part of the install and blacklisted version 24. Kernel 4.15.024 is still blacklisted. Since using LM for almost a year I have always d...

Sorry to see you go.... Surely there's no need for such a drastic step?
