Separate login for Tutorial Section?

Greetings,
I'm logged in to the forum with an apparently unchallenged username & password.
A long-time, but infrequent reader & poster.
I apparently need some further registration ID to log into tutorials.

For some Broadcom wifis, a b43 wifi driver is better

My Dell Win7 laptop has a Broadcom wifi. My wifi will work with either wl or b43 drivers; neither is built-in to Mint. In principle, one has a choice. In making Mint 17 LiveUSBs, one may observe that b43 drivers are blacklisted, perpetuating a Ubuntu practice going back several years. It may be show...

This sounds great,
but I don't find 'choose Properties' on either 17.2 or 17.3 beta with a right-click.
What else am I missing?
TIA
Got it now. Thanks, xenopeek.

What is the a down-side, if any, to ignoring IPV6?

. I'm very pleased with my new Mint 17.3 Xfce LiveUSB, but especially so in that, thanks to Pjotr on Mint's Networking Forum, I have finally discovered the cause of a DNS time-out problem that has been plaguing me for months, using any flavor of Linux on the internet. By editing my Xfce NetworkManag...

Re: wireless problem

I'm having somewhat the same experience described at the start of this thread. I also have a broadcom wifi in my Inspiron. My Broadband wifi works fine until about 10 minutes of no activity, then I have to click on my wireless icon to get DNS going again. My problem is independent of which Linux I'm...

I was wondering, for menu adjusting, does the following reference apply to Xfce?

Re: How can one back-up Mint16 LiveUSB squashfs material?

Some clues in Mint16 Xfce: 1. There is an executable casper-snapshot in /sbin it can make 'persistent images' casper-rw, home-rw & casper-sn and mount these at /cow, /home & /home-sn, respectively formats may be cpio, squashfs or ext2 copyright 2006 2. There is a filesystem casper-rw at /media/mint/...

How can one back-up Mint16 LiveUSB squashfs material?

How can one make a back-up of just the read/write portion of Mint 16 Xfce LiveUSB? I have a 2 Gb LiveUSB with 1200 Mb rofs and 800 Mb of squashfs persistence, currently with 380 Mb persistence free. It seems like one must be able to copy the squashfs material in an image file somehow. I want a solut...

Who's on First?

Use gedit to copy and save this little snippet to your /home/mint folder as the file 'Channel', then with an xterminal do chmod +x Channel. (replace my wlan1 with your own wifi's device name) #!/bin/bash # Assess strengths of those on wifi Channel $1 sudo iwlist wlan1 scan | grep -e Freq -A 3 | grep...

Mint16 Xfce whisker menu initially comes up blank sometimes

Using Mint16 Xfce LiveUSB, and mostly very pleased with it. However, I note sometimes on boot-up the whisker menu comes up blank. I overcome this with ctrl-alt-backspace, but that's a nuisance. I may myself somehow interrupt the initial screen set-up and contribute to this anomaly by moving my mouse...

Is Compiz a lost cause for Mint16 Xfce?

Anyone? I've just made a Mint16 Xfce LiveUSB and thought I'd try out Compiz. I note that just bringing in the compiz 'metapackage' doesn't bring in ccsm nor any default configuration. I also note scant progress in response to 50 launchpad bug reports. Is this a dead-end for now, or is there a how-to...

Re: Linuxmint-13-xfce and Wireless

Greetings, silvio.

I think your problem may be similar to the following:
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=159994

I think you might try installing the Broadcom b43 driver
which works for me and coylum.

Re: Another wireless connection problem

Greetings, Bromax2. Your CQ Mini has a Broadcom wifi, that will require a closed source b43 or wl driver. If you can get on-line either with your ethernet or with an external wifi that Linux recognizes, you can add the necessary driver & firmware for the Mini via Synaptic. I added b43-fwcutter and f...

Re: Broadcom WiFi on Lenovo 3000 C200

Greetings again, coylum.

How exactly did you 'install' wl?
In my case, I just use Synaptic; it does all the work.

How do you know wl doesn't work?

Re: Broadcom WiFi on Lenovo 3000 C200

BCM4311 will work with either wl or b43, but these are incompatible. If both are available, one must be blacklisted. My wifi is BCM4322 which may also use either b43 or wl. I've used both (on another distro) and can't say I see much difference. My Mint16 Xfce iso did not contain either wl or b43 so ...

Re: Broadcom WiFi on Lenovo 3000 C200

Broadcom drivers for wireless is a very confusing subject for two reasons: 1) Broadcom has provided a huge number of similar but different models; and 2) Certain details necessary to implementing (most) any Linux driver remain proprietary, closed source. You can read all about this here: http://wire...
