Mint starts a daemon udevd which sends messages to the GUI when devices appear or vanish. Your desktop responds by showing a CDROM is present or a USB store has been plugged in. You can disable all offers of automatic mounting in any desktop by disabling the udev daemon... sudo udevadm control --ex...

You have multiple devices with dirty file systems on them. So, In fear of losing data you do not want the O/S to automount the devices in case it screws up what you have. Close. My preference for NOT automounting them is because I want to be informed if they are dirty! Mint/Mate silently denying me...
