Re: Bootable Mint USB drive, loses changes after reboot

I also see a whole series of error messages spew by quickly during bootup, but as far as I can tell, after using this setup since July, it has not caused any known problems for me. Here is my dmesg output, if anybody would evaluate it: 4:08:00 SRC=192.168.2.10 DST=224.0.0.251 LEN=32 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x...

Re: Unable To Access Files On Windows 10 Share

I don't have a Windows 10 PC, but recent updates to it did away with SMB 1.1 and I believe it uses SMB 2.0 plus. Search for renabling SMB 1.0 or 1.1, (I don't remember which) in windows 10. There is a Micrsoft link on how to do it. I'm not sure if this will help, or not It has helped some Android us...

Re: Bootable Mint USB drive, loses changes after reboot

I have been running Linux Mint Mate from a Persistent, 32Gb Sandisk Ultra USB 3.0 drive since July without any major problems. I used UUI to create it. The secret with it to get a persistent drive over the default 4Gb maximum is to first format it as an NTFS drive. If you use the UUI default, it is ...

Re: Win 10 upgrade and Samba issue

If my memory serves me correctly Microsoft enabled SMB 2. plus with a recent update. if you re-enable SMB 1.0, your guest account, I believe, will work. You will have to do some research in how to do that as I don't have a Window 10 box to try it on. I saw this posted on an Android forum thread on x...

Re: Live usb persistence over 4GB

Although I haven't setup a Mac with Window since the Lion days, I am wondering if BootCamp would also be another option to setup Windows. That is, if a BootCamp setup will boot from usb, not sure about that? Maybe someone else with recent experience can chime in. I am running a USB 3.0 capable, SanD...

Re: Persistent USB thumb drive the easy way

Does anybody know if I can clone this to a larger thumb drive and expand it's space to the larger drive, with Clonzilla, perhaps? Thanks Marty, your technique looks like it yields what Ramsey at OSDisc sells. A UUI and Home directory on the thumbdrive. I have been very successful taking the OSDisc-...

Re: Persistent USB thumb drive the easy way

I used the Universal USB installer in Window to create a Linux Mint Mate 18.1,32gb persistent drive. The trick to get a persistent drive over 4gbs with it is to first format it as NTFS. When using this, one must leave enough free space for UUI to copy the Linux ISO file to the drive. The first time ...

Re: hello, I have about 6 months in 32Gb USB in persistent mode version 18.1...

I am running linux mint mate also on a 32gb usb thumb drive with persistence. I was able to update linux mint mate from 18.1 to 18.2 through the update manager. So far I have experienced no problems. It does not update the 18.1 iso on the drive, but still boots from the 18.1 iso. I had tried copying...

Re: LiveUSB Boot issue

sounds like it is using neither, as both should be hardware based. like booting windows in safemode. Sounds like you need to go to the hardware thread and learn about possible options for Nvidia and or Intel drivers for your gpus, if the built in drivers are not suitable, as they are for me. I haven...

Re: LiveUSB Boot issue

Are you using the motherboards integrated Intel graphics or do you also have a discrete video card? Also have you checked the linux display settings. I've never had this issue On my old, Dell (2009), AMD integrated graphics, system. someone with much more experience with Linux and newer motherboard ...

Re: LiveUSB Boot issue

Read the info at this link, as I suspected, you may need to change some motherboard settings in the bios settings: https://askubuntu.com/questions/584248/boot-error-acpi-pcc-probe-failed "ACPI PCC probe failed. means that your mainboard doesn't support a relatively new (specified in 2011) feature ca...

Created with either: UUI, Rufus, unetbootin or LILI or other that booted successfully? I've never used two monitors to know. You mean they remain even after booting to the linux desktop?

Re: LiveUSB Boot issue

I, as well get a bunch of errors on the screen before the linux desktop loads up, but with over a month of use have not noticed any problems concerning the errors. They flash by so fast, that they are hard to read. I'm wondering if there is a log to read those errors, I'm not sure. All I know is tha...

Re: LiveUSB Boot issue

If you tryed it with unetbootin that you originally posted about, that may be the reason. as I posted before it failed for me. Universal USB installer worked for me. For a quick test with UUI, just format stick as FAT32 and create a non-persistent, Linux Live USB to test boot. That should be much, m...

Re: LiveUSB Boot issue

Upon you giving me the correct model number, I went to the manual on the asrock site and have confirmed that your uefi bios does have CSM (Compatibility Support Module). or a legacy bios setting. It is on page (98), 104 of the manual open the bios setup and choose the boot menu option and scroll unt...

Re: No casper rw file found in persistant usb

I was looking my self today, before I went to work. Here is a link for a great tool in windows that I have used in the past, and they have many, many tutorials for creating bootable usb windows and linux. The search fuction will bring up useful links. Many of these tutorials are very technical and c...

Re: LiveUSB Boot issue

Upon doing further research, apparently not all uefi bios contain CSM or legacy mode. From Wikipedia: "With the release of Windows 8 in October 2012, Microsoft's certification requirements now require that computers include firmware that implements the UEFI specification. Furthermore, if the compute...

Re: No casper rw file found in persistant usb

I'm not sure if it will work with uefi. You could go into uefi bios settings and disable secure boot and enable legacy bios mode to boot in mbr mode. Some bios have different names for this option. Some call it compatibility mode, some bios emulation, some call it csm mode: The Compatibility Support...

Re: No casper rw file found in persistant usb

I have created a persistent casper-rw usb in Windows with Universal USB Installer. I first fomatted the usb stick to ntfs to allow a persistent file over 4gb in size. my casper-rw uses ~26 gb of a 28gb usb drive. You have to leave extra room for the linux ISO file and other files or it will fail to ...
