How to Determine Meltdown & Spectre Vulnerability

I am running LM 18.2 "Sonya." How can I determine whether the PC (built using new motherboard and CPU about six months ago) is vulnerable to Meltwoen and Spectre? I want to be able to verify the result before and after applying updates and (possibly) new BIOS. I want to verify vulnerability after up...

Re: Suggesting Applications for Software Manager

Thanks for the advice. One program that I want to install is an application from Netgear for network drive maintenance. It is "raidar," and a version for linux is listed on the following download page: https://kb.netgear.com/20684/ReadyNAS-Downloads#raidar There are two versions for Linux; one is fo...

Suggesting Applications for Software Manager

Is there a way that I can suggest applications for future inclusion in the LM Software Manager? Lately, I've encountered a few applications that I would like to run (e.g. MakeMKV), but Software Manager does not currently include them. At my level of expertise (which is technically competent except w...

Make sure that she understands that her printer may no longer work, or may require support of an expert to get it to work.

burning blu-ray?

I searched this forum for "blu-ray," but the search result said that the terms "blu" and "ray" were too common and returned no results. So, I tried not to waste anyone's time by asking the following questions: 1) Can I install a blu-ray drive (via SATA) in my LM machine? Will LM recognize a blu-ray ...

Re: Onenote on linux/alternative

Hoser Rob:

Thanks! The thread you linked suggested that I access Onenote through the Onedrive web interface, and that worked for me. I am somewhat committed to Onenote, since I have been using it extensively for several years.

Re: Onenote on linux/alternative

I cannot access the Onenote web page using Firefox on Linux Mint (cookies are enabled). The web page is blank. In contrast, I can access the Onenote web page using Firefox on my W10 machine.

What am I doing wrong in the Linex Mint Firefox environment?

Update Manager: What to upgrade?

I am about to perform my first updates after having installed Linux Mint a few days ago. However, I do not understand some aspects of the Update Manager. The policy that is selected is "let me view sensitive updates." There are probably 30 or more updates listed, with many selected, but many not, mo...

Re: Disk Usage Analyzer can't analyze disk

When installing the second disk, it was my intention to format it as BTRFS. However, in the "disks" tool, which I used for formatting, BTRFS was not presented as an option. Is there a way to reformat this drive as BTRFS? (This would be an ideal time; there is not yet any irreplaceable data on it.) I...

Disk Usage Analyzer can't analyze disk

I installed and formatted a second drive (sdb1) in my LM PC. I have created two directories and have created a handful of files on this drive. When running the Disk Usage Analyzer, the primary drive can be analyzed. However, when analyzing the second drive (sdb1), the Disk Usage Analyzer indicates t...

Re: How to move Home and similar directories?

Why can't I just cut and paste the directories into the second drive? (I think that I'll gain some valuable insight from the answer to this.)

Re: LibreOffice Draw & Visio Shapes

Catweazel: Your suggestion is the best I have found so far. I found the following entry in LO Draw help, but I can't get it to work; the cursor turns into a "forbidden" symbol when attempting to drag the graphic into the gallery: Adding Graphics to the Gallery You can place a graphic from a document...

How to find print drivers (Canon ix7000)?

I am looking for a printer driver for a Canon Pixma ix7000 printer. When searching the Canon support site, my OS is correctly identified by the Canon driver download tool, but when entering the printer in the title in the driver tool, I receive the following reply: "There is no driver for the OS Ver...

LibreOffice Draw & Visio Shapes

I can successfully open a .vsd file in LibreOffice Draw, and I can edit and save (although not as a .vsd file) it successfully. Related to this, I have some questions: 1) Are there additional libraries of shapes that can be added to LibreOffice Draw? Specifically, I am interested at this time in IT ...

I see that I can add an avatar from either the online selection of national flags, or from a url. I would like to add an avatar that is on my local network, and as far as I know, it is not accessible via url. Any advice?

Re: How to add hard drive

"Disks" indicates that the sole hard drive in the system is /dev/sda1. (I believe that my questions below will make it obvious that I am migrating from Windows to Linux.) At present, there is indeed only one hard drive in my system. 1) Yet, when I navigate to /dev under file system, I do not see sda...

Re: How to create dynamic partitions?

Thanks, all, for the quick replies.

Syg00: Dazzled by the relative complexity of our NAS, I overlooked the obvious simple solution. Your suggestion of separate directories brought me down to earth.

thanks

How to create dynamic partitions?

Is it possible to create dynamic partitions for an added hard drive? In my case, this would be two separate partitions, each with a maximum size of the entire hard drive. When installing our NAS, the installation procedure took us through setting up partitions (or shares), the maximum size of each w...
