Re: Sporadic screen flicker

I took more time to observe the issue. Apparently, the battery is not the issue. Even with the computer constantly connected to a power outlet, the jittering still occurs. I cannot find the specific logic of what triggers on the jittering. I could go for days without it, and then in one day experien...

Re: Size matters

It is my intention to become a SysAdmin and that's why I'm looking to do everything from the CLI. I tried: sudo mkfs.fat /dev/sdb and got the following message: mkfs.fat 3.0.28 (2015-05-16) mkfs.fat: Device partition expected, not making filesystem on entire device 'dev/sdb' (use -I to override) So ...

Re: Size matters

First, I formated the stick by doing:
sudo mkfs.fat /dev/sdb1
Then I typed:
df -h
and got the 1.6G figure.
So supposedly the stick is already formated. Unless I'm missing something here.

Size matters

I have a SanDisk USB flash drive connected. It's 32 GB in size.
On the Mint Desktop it shows as "31 GB Volume".
In the terminal, its size shows as 1.6G
Any idea what's going on?

How to create a CentOS 7 bootable SD card in LM18.2

I’m trying to create a CentOS 7 bootable SD card from within LinuxMint 18.2. Having a hard time finding anything on doing this. I have downloaded this file: CentOS-7-i386-Everything-1810.iso It’s an SIG version of CentOS 7 for 32 bit. Is it possible to do the whole procedure from within the terminal...

32 bit machine, 64 bit VMware player

On my Dell Inspiron E1505 I have LinuxMint 18.2 MATE installed via GRUB alongside WinXP. I would like to install a VMware player within Mint, to test CentOS and OpenSUSE. My machine is 32-bit and on VMware website there’s only 64 bit download for Linux. 1) Will the 64-bit version work for me? 2) Whe...

Re: XFCE alongside Mate

My reason for wanting to have xfce is using less resources. So to your point, having them both installed will only be adding to the existing MATE usage of system resources. If I create a new user, what is the hierarchy between the existing (and only) user at the moment (using the MATE desktop) and t...

XFCE alongside Mate

Hi,
I have linuxmint 18.2 Mate fully installed.
Is there a way that I can add XFCE so that I can switch between the two.
Thank you.

Re: Sporadic screen flicker

It could actually be. I've been on a long hiatus from this forum, from Linux and from this computer. In the meantime it's battery is at 26% and takes forever to recharge. I'll come back with an update. Thank you.

Sporadic screen flicker

Hi, I have Linux Mint 18.2 Mate installed on a Dell Inspiron E1505. Usually everything is fine, but once in a while the screen would have a fast shifting and flickering and the only way I can stop it is by shutting it down and restarting. I don't know whether this is a case of a computer that's too ...

Re: [SOLVED] New LM install, screen blinks and jitters

After a few more times of screen flickering and spontaneous resolution the issue is now clear: it has to do with the laptop's battery. When it is charged 60%-100% there's no flickering. Less than that and the problem begins.

Re: Text editor for writers/authors, seeking recommendations

The material that I'm working on is a compilation of short articles, from one half to two pages long. I wrote these articles over a period of several years. Now, as I come to compile them all into a book, I go over them and many of them feel foreign to me and so I edit them. Working in Mac OS, I con...

Thank you everyone for taking the trouble to write back. My impression is that even if doable, I probably fare better exploring other territories.
I appreciate your honesty and wish you all well.

Re: Installing from a live stick onto an SD card

The more I search the web to gain further understanding, the more I begin to realize that this is a bad idea. Most due to the fact that a thumb drive or SD card have a limited number of write cycles, a fact to which I have been oblivious. I'll just use the live version for now and manage with the li...

Re: Installing from a live stick onto an SD card

The picture that I get from the Linux installer https://postimg.org/image/j09n0d6xx/ indicates that /dev/sdc (the 32 GB SD card on which I want to install Linux) has 0 MB of free space. This is impossible because I have formatted the SD card. So now I'm not sure whether I should delete partition /de...

Round two computer career - am I being realistic?

Hi everyone, I'm hoping that the Linux Mint forum is appropriate for this post. I worked in the late 90's as a Java programmer. I held that position for one year when the dot-com bubble bursted and I found myself without a job. That was my first (and only) real job in hi-tech. My four year Bachelor'...

Re: Text editor for writers/authors, seeking recommendations

Thank you everyone for really helping me here. Thank you for the advice about PPA - I wouldn't have known. So far Kate and Gedit look nice as a distraction free writing environment. But I would like to try out several others before committing. And what's most important, I would like to finish the dr...

Re: Text editor for writers/authors, seeking recommendations

I'm obviously doing something wrong, but what?
Here's a list of text editors that I'd like to try out:

Notepad++, Atom, Write!, JDarkRoom, TextRoom, Zim, Ghostwriter

I go to the Software Manager, type their name in the search window on the right hand side, and I get nothing.
