Re: Windows 10 & Mint dual boot question

It's actually not my PC. It belongs to my 84 year old Mom who was just upgraded to Windows 10. Now she is having all sorts of problems. She hates it. She wants to try Linux. I've done my best to back up her data. But, I'd like to leave Windows on her PC just in case she decides she finds that easier...

Re: Windows 10 & Mint dual boot question

Well, it could if the disk is using the GUID partition table (gpt) although you probably would still need to shrink an existing partition to make room for Mint. Would the Mint installer test for that? If no one knows, that's OK. Ill go there later this evening and follow the instructions in Google ...

Windows 10 & Mint dual boot question [Solved]

Hi, I've installed various Linux distros over the years for myself and others. I was always able to create another primary partition. But, i have never messed with trying to install on a single partition shared by Windows. The PC has 4 primary partitions with Windows using all of them. I would like ...

Re: I can't get on-line unless I'm using my VPN

I'm also using 18.1, XFCE, with PIA. In home, I have a shell script pia.sh provided by PIA. #!/bin/sh /home/joegum/.pia_manager/pia_manager/run.sh > /dev/null 2>&1 & On my desktop, I created a shortcut to that script. ( sh pia.sh ) Then I created a link on panel. No issues. This system has had sever...

Re: ClamTk - hidden files only [Solved]

I've added both BitDefender (with GUI) and F-PROT. Even though BD also does not give me the option to scan all hidden files and folders from the GUI rather than individually, it is very fast. Also, trying F-PROT from the CL scanning .* . Between the 3, I should be able to get what I want. Thanks.

Re: ClamTK - hidden files only

Hi phd21, ClamTk will not let me select more than one hidden folder at a time. I tried using both Shift and Ctrl. If i want to scan .adobe .config .firefox .local ,macromedia .mozilla .opera .thumbnails I need to do 8 different scans. This involves me nurse-maiding the computer instead of going off ...

Re: ClamTK - hidden files only

Thanks for the replies. For the last few years, i've been reading that the bad guys are concentrating less on malware directed towards any one OS, and instead concentrating on the Application layer. In other words, target the app and the malware will run on multiple platforms. For instance, a bad co...

Hadn't tried changing the individual icons like that before.
That's cool.

Nor did I think about contacting Soft Maker about that issue.
That's just way to obvious (or something).
Oops. I forgot that not everyone uses XFCE. I'm glad you were able to understand my reply anyhow :)

Re: Icon issue with FreeOffice by SoftMaker

You could try manually resetting each changed icon. Right click on desktop to bring down the menu. Right click on the affected program from the drop down list. Click on the Icon field and search for the correct icon. Btw, you could also try contacting the creator and letting them know about the prob...

ClamTk - hidden files only [Solved]

Is there a way to have clamtk scan only the hidden files in my /home directory? When using the CLI, I can just "clamscan -a -i -r -z /home/username/.* " However, I haven't been able to figure out the magic formula for the location field in clamtk. I've also tried googling this without luck. Thanks.

Re: Nvidia card with vesa driver?

The problem seems solved. First, I needed to install the correct version on Mint to get the nvidia-legacy-304 driver to work correctly. The, I started having problems with the screen turning itself on and off repeatedly. Replacing the screen seems to have corrected that. Thanks again to everyone who...

Re: Nvidia card with vesa driver?

It's having problems again.

The monitor starts turning itself on and off repeatedly about every 2 seconds. The misbehavior began after I started watching several Youtube videos.

Now the SVA Automatic settings are taking over the center of the screen again as well.

Thanks anyhow.

Re: Nvidia card with vesa driver?

Hello Pjotr, I just completed installing mint XFCE 18.1. So far, so good. :) The nvidia-304 driver is loaded. The most conservative update policy is selected as well. During the next few days, I'll be customizing XFCE to my preference. I'll report back in a few days to let everyone know how the syst...

Re: Nvidia card with vesa driver?

Aleron Ives, I blacklisted nouveau, nv, nvidia. After rebooting, the screen was black... not even a command prompt. Just a blinking line. I Ctrl+F4 into terminal and un-blacklisted nvidia. I guess vesa is only for no X. Thanks anyhow. Edit: I re-edited xorg.conf. I used vesabf this time. When I boot...
