Re: Backup partition

I concur that it's best to have a separate SSD/HDD/USB drive for backups. I replace the optical drive (DVD/CD) on many laptops with a Sata 2.5" hard disk enclosure (using the original DVD/CD faceplate) which contains a 1TB SSD/HDD for backups. These 2.5" SATA SSD/HDD enclosures fit in the place of ...

Re: Backup partition

As I want to encrypt my whole drive, I will be forced to use external storage devices. I'm just wondering, because I don't have an external hard disk, but I do have several USBs and SD cards, could I make a back up, split it into several archives, reinstall with encryption and then extract the split...

Re: How could I encrypt Linux Mint

"...could I lose my data..." Yes, at any time, for no reason at all. You should not need to worry about this... because ...all your data is duplicated on removable storage. "...is there any way to encrypt the home folder of my original user..." Yes. You need lots of free space in your /home folder ...

How could I make a new user with an encrypted home? From within the admin account sudo adduser --encrypt-home userName Follow the instructions. You may have to install ecryptfs-utils but the terminal will tell you how. If you require the account to have sudo privileges visudo -f /etc/sudoers and ad...

Timeshift snapshots

Hi, I'm wondering if I should keep all my timeshift snapshots or only leave the latest one, considering my system is running smoothly now. I think the earlier snapshots only waste hard disk space, but I could possibly be wrong. Any advice?

Re: How could I encrypt Linux Mint

Is there a way to encrypt directories? For example Documents, Downloads etc. I tried gpg-zip -c -o file.gpg /home/user/Videos in the terminal, it asked for my password twice and I gave it. However, when I open the folder Videos(/home/user/Videos), I don't get prompted to enter a password.

Re: How could I encrypt Linux Mint

Certainly you can convert an unencrypted file system into something linux-encrypted, but then you have to reprogram Linux to tell it how to unlock the encryption before it tries to mount it. It's not impossibly difficult, but you end up with a non-standard Mint that nobody else can service. If your...

Programming with Python 3

Hi, I'm new to programming. I installed IDLE(using python 3.5) and am writing code in it. When I write python in terminal, it shows that version 2.7.12 is installed, however, when I try to update it, it shows that 3.5.2(the newest version) is already installed. I'm trying to execute the following co...

I'm logged in, but the pop-up window keeps appearing. I don't need to enter a username/password to sign in, but it's pretty annoying logging in every time.

Re: How can I install ClamAV's newest version?

It looks to me like it didn't get installed correctly or completely. user@user ~ $ clamscan -r / LibClamAV Error: cl_load(): No such file or directory: /usr/local/share/clamav ERROR: Can't get file status I would suggest that you timeshift back to just before you tried installing from source. Re: How can I install ClamAV's newest version?

I'd take a look in /usr/local/etc/freshclam.conf.sample and see whats there and possibly rename it to freshclam.conf. EDIT: and probably move it to /etc/ It doesn't allow me to rename it, how could I do this? ## ## Example config file for freshclam ## Please read the freshclam.conf(5) manual before...
