Re: Constantly Updating - What do I actually need?
[...] Bloody hell, that backfired. I'm not sure why you took that so personally. I certainly didn't call you ignorant. As I've already said a few times, you're welcome to do you. I did accept that. I attempted to show you an alternative, which was where I was going to leave it, because, aga...

Re: Constantly Updating - What do I actually need?
The point being, after years, and not just Mint, but also Ubuntu (with more users) there is no verifiable documented cases of virus infection, there really is no need to worry about them. I think that's a case of argument from ignorance fallacy, which is just another way of saying the phrase I stat...

Whatever works. On my system, it's Del, which I do sometimes press repeatedly, but I have noticed some systems seem to just stop doing anything until you stop pressing the button.

Re: Constantly Updating - What do I actually need?
There was another one of those antivirus threads (July 10) where two members asked to see just one verified case of infection, 4 pages, not one example was shown. The absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, but I can appreciate your position on this. After viewing that thread, I did actuall...

Re: PSA: xfce4-terminal launcher --window option
Nice one. I wonder why they changed it.
BTW, XFCE is a desktop environment, not a window manager. The window manager for XFCE is XFWM4.

Re: RESUME immediately after SUSPEND completed (I/O errror)
[...] I'm not sure, but usually '/var/log/syslog' is looked at for these sort of things. Sometimes '/var/log/boot.log' can be helpful if there's an error during boot which could be a clue. You might find '/var/log/Xorg.0.log' useful, if you have it. Some commands you might find useful: # View the S...

Re: Constantly Updating - What do I actually need?
A drawback of distributions like Linux Mint, is that it's viable for a great many users, but is optimal for nobody. It's not just Linux Mint, and this approach is not specific to distributions of Linux, either. It's just the compromise you often make in software. However, the intended user-friendly ...

Re: Is it possible to set up sequenced keybinds? [21.1 Cinnamon]
You probably want xdotool(1), predictably provided by the 'xdotool' package. It's a command-line tool which allows you to do what you're wanting, and much more. Great for automation involving keyboard and mouse inputs and for manipulating GUIs. In a shell script, for the simplest of stuff, you proba...

Re: Can't get into GRUB/boot/BIOS
(please correct me if I'm using these terms wrong) F12 is apparently used to enter the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) on that machine, or as it's knows on more modern machines, the UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface). The BIOS or UEFI has nothing directly to do with Linux; it's essential...

Re: firefox not showing bookmark toolbar entries
I've heard the way Firefox is handled in Linux Mint is not great, causing your settings and stuff to be wiped away after an update; this might be related to that. Did you update Firefox yesterday?

Re: Easy Linux Tips Project
My stance on dual-booting is simple: if you must do it, just use a different storage for Linux and Windows. Then you need only use your BIOS/UEFI to select which device you wanna use. For example, all I would have to do is press F8 to select the device, and that's it! It's how I did it years ago, an...

Re: Low Latency Kernel 6.2
When it was the latest of the stable branch, from Feb 26th (6.2.1) to Apr 13th (6.2.11), I was using 6.2 on an Ubuntu 18.04 base, which is a much older base than what you're using, but I don't remember having any issues. I use my own configuration though, so I dunno if there's any issues I avoided b...

Re: RESUME immediately after SUSPEND completed (I/O errror)
What about the usual
systemctl suspend
? That's what I would expect as the usual way to suspend without using the GUI way. Some information here, which I assume is still relevant.- Sun Jul 16, 2023 6:24 am

Re: Need help understanding Python components installed on Mint with pip
That's fair, but (not to be argumentative) the consequences are also extreme, so I'm giving a bit overly conservative advice, because I'm looking at it from the perspective of beginners who know nothing about the systems involved. Sometimes being a bit extreme results in people moving towards a mor...

Re: Unlock WD elements external Hardrive failed with unlock
[...] Unfortunately, it's quite possible, if not very likely, that the script you ran damaged the software component of the drive or its enclosure, which is why initially using Windows to unlock the drive would've been the best thing to do. There's always a risk making permanent changes using a too...

[...] Oh, sorry to have wasted your time. I completely missed that you typed all that. Peace be with you, too. :) A lot of people are saying to use --skip-launcher ; have you tried that, as well? Maybe it's the launcher trying to install DirectX. Hopefully, in time, it'll be better supported...

Re: Dependency hell and how to avoid it?
Building from source is fine , provided it's done properly by a user who knows what they're doing or is willing to properly research how to do it. If you're new to Linux, I recommend that you avoid software compilation in all but necessary situations. It was years before I got into manually compilin...
