Re: [Not Solved] The “Meltdown” bug is hitting Intel

I'm afraid that anyone who switched to Linux to avoid hardware support/compatibility issues did so for the wrong reason. Hardware support is the biggest problem in Linux in general ......This is obviously a real problem judging from the number of forum posts on the subject. I don't see any answer r...

Re: [Not Solved] The “Meltdown” bug is hitting Intel

New kernel 14.13.0.26 broke video on 2 PCs so far. Nvidia-304 driver won't allow proper resolution on desktop with GeForce 6150SE. Changing to open source driver fixed. Toshiba NB205 netbook same problem and video corruption but there is no alternative driver. Isn't this the kind of shtuff we switch...

GeForce 6150SE Display resolution limited after updates

Mint XFCE 18.3 will only allow up to 1024x768, no widescreen modes after last Mint updates seems like maybe it is not detecting the modes the monitor will do. Graphics = NVIDIA C61 [GeForce 6150SE nForce 430] driver: Screenshot_2018-01-13_23-08-15.png OK with prior kernel 4.10.0-42 but not with 4.13...

Re: Paid Support

I have converted many customers over to Linux Mint. They are all pretty happy with it and I don't get many questions. So far all the questions have been very simple and I have been able to answer them easily. However, it may happen that there is a more serious problem. Then what? In addition, in ord...

XFCE 18.3 CD/DVD Creator

I know how to use Xfburn, etc. but I tried the non-techie user way of sticking a blank DVD R in the drive and dragging and dropping files in to the Thunar file manager window for the DVD drive. When I do this the title of the window is "CD/DVD Creator." But I see no way to tell the "C...

Atheros AR9285 Toshiba NB205 intermittent

Situation: Mint XFCE 18.3 installed on Toshiba NB205. Dual boot with Windows 7 starter Access point A: I enter password, connects to access point, but after a while the connection fails. When I try to reconnect, it appears as if the password is wrong. Several tries, no luck. Initial connection might...

XFCE Update Mgr giving Cinnamon (nemo) update

Why is the update cinnamon-nemo showing up in my XFCE 18.3 Update Manager?
note: was also listed in 18.2 before I updated to 18.3.
File manger is Thunar, Nemo is not installed.

Re: Create Samba Shares from Thunar

Yes, I keep forgetting Mint doesn't install samba by default any more. ... You know we criticize Microsoft for changing things for apparently no good reason so that some well-established procedure doesn't work any more. This is one of the things (along with the whole forced and flaky update debacle...

Re: Create Samba Shares from Thunar

This did not work for me in XFCE 18.2 until I did

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install samba --install-recommends

which makes no sense because previous to trying to make a share in Mint I had no problems accessing Windows shares from Mint.

Re: Linux Mint 18.3 “Sylvia” Cinnamon released!

When will XFCE 18.3 be available?
Cinnamon is nice, but I go for max performance so I like XFCE. I'm converting a lot of customers from Vista and I use older converted PCs myself.

Re: suspicious bug report response email

I don't remember doing a search rather than going through linuxmint.com, but that's what must have happened. I caution people against searching for support contacts all the time. This time I apparently got to a legitimate site for another product, but wha usually happns is someone searchs for help w...

Re: [SOLVED] Manufacturer affirms that cannot release Linux driver due to copyright. How is that possible?

So what if they don't want to provide open source drivers? They could still provide proprietary drivers that a user can download and install. Not all software for Linux has to be free open source and available in some FOSS repository. The end user has a choice as to whether to install non-open sourc...

suspicious bug report response email

So I submitted a bug report to what I though was the official channel. (don't ask me the details because I don't remember but I think I just followed the links on linuxmint.com until I got to a page where I could submit. Here's the reply I got: From: noreply@salesforce.com [mailto:noreply@salesforce...

Re: What is Live 18.2 DVD screensaver password.

does not work, at least not reliably. if I futz around enough maybe I can get it to unlock. Last time I got it to work I used the on-screen keyboard. this makes no sense because I can see that I've typed "mint" for the user, and I know I just pressed return for the password. and since the ...

What is Live 18.2 DVD screensaver password.

18.2 XFCE 32 bit live DVD If screensaver activates it asks for username and password. Other posts say user is mint and password is blank I have tried all kinds of combinations, none work. can't recall but pretty sure same problem on 64 bit as well yes I have checked sha256 sum of iso files this same...
